UPDATE: EuroNASCAR Driver Under Investigation for Racism Against Sim Racing Streamer

A EuroNASCAR champion is under formal investigation by the series organisers after they were found to have sent racially charged messages in the Twitch chat of our own Elz Indriani.

On the evening of 8 May, OverTake streamer Elz Indriani was live on her personal Twitch channel when she received messages in her chat from a EuroNASCAR driver. These messages included racial slurs targeting Elz's Asian ethnicity.

A statement provided by EuroNASCAR read: "EuroNASCAR has made diversity and inclusion a priority and condemns every kind of racism and intolerance. The organization strives to offer an inclusive environment for the entire championship, partners and fan base. The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series will take all proper actions in due course after reviewing the facts surrounding this case."

The driver in question is Paul Jouffreau, the reigning EuroNASCAR 2 champion and current driver for the RDV Compétition team. After making the initial comments, he allegedly switched to the account of the sim racing team he competed for, Unity Racing, and continued the harassment.

Unity Racing have since released a statement claiming that they have expelled Jouffreau from the team, and that the comments made from their account are not reflective of their team's fundamental values. Their founders Thomas Toulemonde and Bryan Talatizi went on to say that they are "actively working to strengthen our internal policies to ensure that such incidents do not happen again in the future."

Jouffreau himself has released a statement claiming he will accept the decision that the organisers of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series will make on the matter. As of the time of publishing, there is no official decision, but we will update this article once EuroNASCAR do make one.

Unfortunately, NASCAR racing drivers and racial online incidents are not unheard of. Infamously, Kyle Larson dropped a racial slur in iRacing voice chat during an event in April 2020, which led to him being suspended. He has since returned to the Cup Series with Hendrick Motorsports and won the 2021 title.

Then in 2023, Noah Gragson was suspended after he was found to have liked a social post making light of the murder of an African-American man by a police officer. After having his suspension lifted, Gragson now competes for Stewart-Haas Racing.

UPDATE 14/05/2024: EuroNASCAR have announced that Paul Jouffreau will be hit with a two-year probation throughout the 2025 season and an immediate fine. He will also be participating in a sensitivity meeting before the Vallelunga round of the championship from 18-19 May.

It is sim racing related, and since nowadays racism is often called out in other walks of life we shouldn't be exempt.
In the 1960's I worked alongside Indians, Pakistanis and West Indians and saw the abuse they were regularly subjected to. I'm glad times have changed, we have many children living round about our house, with different colours and nationalities I like that they all happily play together but was saddened that the only racist comment I've heard recently came from someone of my generation.
Fortunately none of the kids heard it.
There's a lot of fragile people on the internet who can't handle change ;)

Kudos to OverTake...

If there is interest in this material, might I suggest a political forum, so that those of us who are uninterested can avoid it?
Our ToS strictly forbids that and it really has no place on this site.
I
find this site to generally be an oasis of calm. It's absurd to get worked up about a hobby as harmless as ours
Certainly in comparison to many others I agree, yes sometimes passions overtake civility and tolerance but on the most part people behave.

Ok, this is taken directly from your own Terms of Use

Discussions and content centred around race, nationality, religion, politics, cultures or belief systems is not permitted. This content can be sensitive for some users and therefore will be removed and appropriate action taken against the poster.

Which depending on interpretation means that this entire article is possibly in violation of the terms of use.

Certainly the post that I made earlier in this thread, where I discuss my nationality and my negative experiences with a very very small number of individuals native to the country that I live in, is, by my interpretation, certainly in violation of these terms.

Therefore I look forward to the removal of the post, and will also gladly accept any any action taken against my account that is deemed appropriate and necessary.

I think most people will be able to understand the interpretation.

I believe most people can differentiate between the demonstration of the odd bit of xenophobia to illustrate a point and straight up racist remarks from one person to another.

In this supposed enlightened 21st century it is good to be reminded of such things. That after twelve thousand years of alleged human "civilization" these attitudes still exist. Sweeping them under the carpet or looking the other way merely causes them to proliferate.

I am 70 years old, I grew up in the rural south. At ten years old my best friend and I were taken by some older boys to the site of a recent lynching, where they laughed about the incident and said it was "a good start". But I still remember the rope marks on the tree limb and the stains of various body fluids on the ground beneath it ....where an eighteen year old man was beaten with a baseball bat til he stopped kicking. Viola Liuzzo was murdered a few miles from our home.

Racism is still as rampant, just not as blatant. If the incident of this thread occurred within our community we should certainly be interested, and concerned. This transcends politics, religion, and society, and strikes at the core of our humanity. Consider your stance, complacency fuels the problem.

End of soapbox. I make no apologies for my opinions.

So one rule for one and another rule for others so stories like this can be posted. "I'm exempt from the rules and terms of service because I work here" is exactly what it is. What a joke.

As far as I see it. there's no merit in posted a story like this... the offender is judged and and all evidence is removed because it's offensive nature, so what are we being asked to think? we're just expected to jump on the hate train or be cast in the same vein.

Don't post stories like this on your site if there's no place in your society for a discussion.
We have no need to know!

I find it fascinating that people that admit to not reading the article and not wanting the subject discussed [here] still find it necessary to comment on said article.

It’s like shouting “there is no fire here and there is no need for one, I don’t want to see a fire! ” then pouring gasoline all over it

It’s Overtake’s prerogative to post whatever they want to on their website. You might not agree and wan to read about it, but nobod is forced, so…. How about just leave the articles (and comment sections) alone if it’s something you don’t want to see. If there are too many articles you don’t like, go somewhere else It really isn’t rocket science…

Just my 2 cents

We have no need to know!
we're just expected to jump on the hate train or be cast in the same vein.
This is the worst atitude.
We must know, we must learn from this maybe, small lesson. It is about education, stories like this must have more publicity in an attempt to prevent future manifestation of this uggly behavior.
If we do not know and we do not learn, we are doomed to repeat the greatest mistakes of mankind.
It is not about jumping in the hate train, it is about to AVOID it, and it is about to stop other to jump in.

I just want to say, I think it shows some integrity to back someone on your team, no matter the negativity people bring. It shows the character of Overtake, and to me its, good character. What people don't understand is when people on your team are affected, its not political it ethical. There is a big difference! It also show to me, a lack of integrity, by some of the commenters.

While i agree this totally wrong, sporting organisations are to blame. PPl use to go to watch sport to escape agendas views narratives & politics, now most sports are bringing it into their sport. Let sport be sport again and leave the rest out of it. Remember in the beginning they built colosseums to keep the masses occupied while gov made laws while they were busy being entertained. Gaming is like a stadium full of ppl.

I agree, by it's very nature politics is divisive and when think you just mind get some respite from it being driven down your neck at every turn you've got some out of touch millionaire who do does nothing but chase a bag of wind around a paddock and do lines of coke virtue signalling at you.

However, in this case, It's got nothing to do with politics. Sprouting racial abuse isn't a political stance it's being a degenerate. I've got no time for it. This individual lives an incredibly privileged life, accepts all of the benefits of the publicity he gets, it's absolutely appropriate this his appalling behaviour is called out publically.

You shared a (interesting) story of your own as a reminder of the violence that may result from racism. But you forgot the (dark) past of OT's mother company. That's exactly why the editorial line is to avoid any political content and comment because it will bring arguments, divisions in a community which has been built around a simple hobby.

So, what bohers me there is OT publishing an article about racism, it is just a lack of classiness and almost insulting towards History. Maybe in 50 or 100 years everyone will have forgot that part of History and it will be ok to communicate that kind of information. But right now, I must say "no you can't do that yet Overtake", whatever your intentions are. Professionals have to be responsible.

Other point : irrational hate, which racism is part of (btw the word "racism" should not exist as there is scientificly only one unique human race ; basically using it means we agree that we are different races, then we are just as racists a those we call racisits...), is something that always have existed and will always exist. It is part of our humanity. There may be people on this forum who do not have any issue with their rejection of others just for their skin color, their origins, their social class... are OT's contributers legitimate to tell them what to think? The following sentence shows what OT thinks :
"Unfortunately, NASCAR racing drivers and racial online incidents are not unheard of." It is political and, as I explained before, absolutely not legitimate.

My point is absolutely not to bash OT's employees and their intentions, it is just a reminder of what they can do by representing the company they work for, considering its past. And if you are too young to understand, do your homework, check the facts, it can only be positive for you, your knowledge, and you will understand this article is awkward and may even be irrespectful towards some of your readers. That's exactly why your are not allowed to share political views and news.

Sorry for the long comment but in this same comments section, OT's staff said it clearly : the news shocked one collegue, they shocked his personal political views, and they decided to make an article. That's bad decision under emotion due to political opinions.
