Formula 1 returns to Europe for the 2022 season for the first time, with the field taking on Imola for the Emilia Romagna GP.

Last minute venue changes became common place for Formula 1 in 2020 due to COVID, and this led to the return to a popular circuit in both real life and sim racing, Imola.

This weekend, F1 is back in action at the Italian site for the 2022 Elimia Romagna GP, or Formula 1 Rolex Gran Premio Del Made In Italy E Dell'Emilia-Romagna 2022 as the kids like to say.

Ferrari flawless

Ferrari and Charles Leclerc's nearly flawless start to the 2022 campaign positions them as the obvious favourite for this weekend. A slight pace advantage, and a significant reliability advantage have put them comfortably ahead of Red Bull what looked to be a two-horse race after Bahrain. Leclerc has amassed an impressive 71 points over three races, with George Russell of Mercedes in second place with just 37 points.

Mercedes being second in the constructor's championship after three races wouldn't have been a bold prediction last year, but an obvious deficit in race pace have left the silver arrows at the mercy of Red Bull's reliability, which to date has worked out favourably for Mercedes.

Hamilton and Verstappen

Similarly, a prediction in 2021 of Lewis Hamilton being three points ahead of Max Verstappen entering the fourth race of the season wouldn't have shocked many people, but the fact that the points gap separates them in fifth and sixth positions in the driver's standings might have been harder to comprehend.

An exciting mid-field battle full of surprises has emerged so far this season, with McLaren, Alpine, Alfa Romeo, Haas and AlphaTauri all being within 14 points of each other in the championship.

Sprint races

This is the first F1 Sprint weekend of the year. Friday's sessions include one practice, and qualifying for the sprint race. Saturday will see the drivers take to the grid of the second and final practice session, followed by the sprint race. And finally, on Sunday the race will take place, with the starting order having been determined by the results of the sprint race.

The added race time on Saturday will put even more pressure on the teams who have yet to establish reliability with their 2022 cars. Add to that a weather forecast calling for a mix of sun, cloud and rain, and this should be a very exciting race weekend.

Schedule

  • Free practice 1 - 22 April | 13:30 - 14:30
  • Qualification - 22 April | 17:00 - 18:00
  • Free practice 2 - 23 April | 12:30 - 13:30
  • Sprint - 23 April | 16:30 - 17:00
  • Race - 24 April | 15:00 - 17:00

Dang that chicane is like the wall of champions, one slip-up and very easy to end your race. Leclerc is lucky it wasn't game over for him.

Ham p14 Russel P4 thats a big gap..
Sainz again unlucky

I see the pre-podium back room convos are back...but come on why is Crofty apologising for the language? Either show it with a delay and censor it or don't show it at all, but they chose neither option so accept it and move on lol

Exciting race, but what is going on with video feed this season? Why go to a shot of Carlos Sainz watching a monitor for 20 seconds as soon as Leclerc goes into the wall? I can see a shot of Carlos head anytime I want, I’d rather see what’s happening on the track.

I feel like that’s the third or four third time this year they've switched away from on track action at critical time to show nonsense. My dog is really getting tired of my screaming at the TV.

I think this season is the beginning of the end of Hamilton's career, if the Merc can not suit Lewis soon I think he's just going to go backwards and will lose self belief eventually Russell is proving to be the faster young driver most knew he could be, This season is awesome so far.

This year is starting to feel like....2018? or 19...When Ferrari jumped out of the gate but then Vettel began a series of unforced errors that allowed Hamilton to easily climb back into the fight.

Leclerc is the best driver with the best car. He's stronger than Hamilton ever was imo. Will win several world championships.
The best driver is over a whole season. Not 2 or 3 races that the Ferrari was very good and Redbull DNF , today he shows again Leclerc impatience... I hope for him he is not a Vettel mistake maker under pressure

I think he is the 3rd best driver after Verstappen and Norris, but he doesn't have the calm and sovereignty of Max. Well, noone has I guess. I actually think Verstappen is the best driver by a mile and has been for some time. I don't see anyone else becoming world champion apart from having a way superior car. That said, would be interesting to see Lando in a similarly performing car.

Shout out to Cafe Bustelo ($2.99/10 oz bag!) for the 3 cups of great cheap coffee that kept me awake thru today's Imola Parade of Boredom,

I think Lando is more like Max.

although I don't know if it's smart to have a long contract with Mc Laren.

Race hit a bit of a lull during the middle but it had an interesting first and third phase. Another great race from Lando, I hope Mclaren can give him a car to challenge for wins because he certainly seems to have the talent. Sad for Bottas to have more pit stop issues that hurt his final position. I am at a loss of what to think what's going on with Merc, George seems to be able to drag that thing into solid points but Lewis just appears unmotivated at the challenge ahead.

”BuT DrS is ToO pOwerFuLL!

I don’t think Lewis agrees.
He would have easily passed Gasly if the French hadn't DRS too.

The part of the race without DRS was much more enjoyable, with nice moves by Russell and Bottas.
