World Rally RX Looking For All Electric Move in 2020?

That's exactly what I mean. That situation will push the manufactures companies to develop better and faster charging systems and that's what all will get out of that.
But I'm thinking that for 24h race it will be better to have underneath the tarmac an induction charging system and power the cars with no need to charge for long time.

I don't understand the problem with these moves to electric.
Electric motors have faster acceleration so the cars could be much quicker and they are also cleaner - surely this is a no brainer.

I'm happy to keep an open mind and see what happens...
I do love the noise of "proper" engines (all-time favourite I think has to be the 1980s Grp-B Audi Quattro), but yes, racing can still be interesting without noise - e.g. cycling, sailing, whatever. (Even RC cars ^^ - jeez those guys must have fast reactions.)

But: FE just doesn't do it for me - tried it, didn't like it. The lack of noise was a minor problem.

why care for our children and next generations if we can enjoy a super noisy exhaust from a super polluting ICE??... ... ...

The irony is the future generations are the inevitable death of mankind because there are TOO many of 'em. What is far more important is for man to sort out the colossal overpopulation of the planet. Any other measures we take are just pissing in the wind.

It's because a lot of us are also petrolheads. And I agree with everything my Uncle Jeremy says about electric cars.:)

I see your Audi Quattro, and raise with a BRM H16 (start up of engine at 5:26 ish)

And then I raise it again with a BRM V16!

But ye, I am still optimistic with regards to EVRX!

the thing some people fail to realise is that to many the act of watching motorsport is emotional and the "atmosphere" is a crucial component, sound plays a massive part of that. Imagine going to a rock concert and the band sounds like they're playing through a tinny 40 watt amp. Imagine watching a big football match and at every bit of action there's no deafening roar just some hoarse whispering. Taking away the thunderous sound of motorsport is taking away a large part of the soul of motorsport. Hell how many people moaned about the "vacuum cleaner" Gran Turismo sounds? And they sound BETTER than electrics! Yes youngsters will accept it more, but I've found that a lot of the best motorsport happened BEFORE I was born, what happens when those youngsters watch old vids of the fire spitting behemoths of the past and wonder what the smeg happened.

Motorsport has naff all to do with sales unless the car raced bears a somewhat similarity with what is purchased. I've never bought a car based on motorsport because I can't afford them (got close to an Evo GTA once but by that point that sort of car was out of fashion in the WRC). The only cars I can afford bear no resemblance to what is raced (if raced at all). I'm not going to buy any car that's in the WRC based on what does well or not, they may as well use noddy's car as a base for all I care, once the steroids get pumped in it would look as good as a modern WRC car.

Most people don't buy the cars that are raced. Look at how the cookie cutter SUVs are rammed down our throats in adverts, adverts that show very little driving and espouse "socialising" as a core component (FFS). with tag lines of "stand out from the crowd"....what? when almost every SUV (a few exceptions aside) all look the sodding same, I passed 3 in a row the other day, 3 brands, all looked more or less identical, black with blacked out windows. All hogging the middle lane when the inside lane was empty (god I hate suvs!). Who buys an SUV based on the brands motorsport heritage? (people who buy Porsche SUVs have FAR more money than sense).

well that turned into a bit of a rant. Electrics have a place I agree, but OUT of the sport. Jesus I'm glad I'm 46 and won't be around much longer to see how completely crap things get. <Meldrew mode off>

Just to add some more to my "something must be done" and "costs getting out of control" in World RX, I see that the EKS team have talked money lately, and for there to be any point in doing a season, a team (of two cars) needs a budget of 5 mill EUR. Anything less is pointless. For one car, it would be around 3 - 3.5 mill EUR (it isn't a double cost to run car 2 compared to just one car). This is more than double what was used in 2015, and around the double of what they used in 2016 when Ekström became world champion. According to them (and many others) something happened between 2016 and 2017 and the budgets got crazy.

Petter Solberg used 3ish million EUR when he did the whole World Championship in rally with his own team back in 2010 and 2011.
So even with inflation, the cost of doing a single car effort in World RX now, is around the same, or more expensive than a single car World Rally Championship effort with the pre 2017 WRC cars. When you think about how much driving you do in WRC, both on stages, liasion and recce. More events, more travelling... The cost in WRX are way way to high.

No wonder why Bakkerud was talking about maybe doing an international series in rallying with an R5 car in 2018 if he didn't land a seat. That would be way cheaper, and he'd get much more time in the seat.

This is not new news at all. It was talked about last year. There are some factors that you have to think about in this. First of all get over yourselves. It's the manufacturers that want this. whether you like it or not, cars and bikes are moving to electric in the real world. To sell cars you race them its been that way for over 50 years now. The big companies want to showcase their tech just like they have in motorsport for years. You might want to remember that the regs around the world are changing and cars, as we know them, are done for. Europe alone if it had it its way wants all not electric vehicles off of the road by 2025. VAG has said they are spending more on electric cars now the internal combustion engines.

VAG should shut the f up. Offcourse they are putting more money into electric now than combustion engines. Cheating software is cheap. I still can't believe they got away with it in europe. No drop in sales no nothing. Only US is really fining them. The big companys just want electric because the damn politicians want electric. pollution from traffic is only 10%. Heating from houses is 5 times more. Why aren't we going electric on heating of houses? /rant

But the fact is the combustion engine ain't completely dead. Mazda ( yeah the one company ,that sells in EU, where you can still get peoples cars with normal engines, no tiny ass, big turbo engines) is developing it's next generation of engines. I don't mean the petrol engines that can run on self combustion because those are comming very soon. No they will develop an engine that has the same co2 output than an electric car charged at night with a natural gas powered powerplant. Because yeah solar ain't gonna help with charging 1.4billion vehicles in the world.
Anyway they do what they want, my trusty daily volvo 240 from '89 is going to be my compagnion for a very long time.

and won't be around much longer to see how completely crap things get.
A little of topic message:
I'm also glad for (I hope) not being here when all governments will ban all of us to drive our own cars for safety reasons and the f---ing auto pilots will have all fun :cry::cry::cry::cry:

well, i'd enjoy being escorted through any town larger than 500,000 since "driving" there is basically just standing waiting, crawling, standing waiting crawling etc etc etc. If autopilot can solve that problem - and it seems it can - i will more than happily join in and get some quality time back. on a nice undulating free scenic road, i might just as well cruise on my own, don't need no ai for that.
