What First Car ?

But petrol is more expensive ;). And diesels are far too expensive in terms of tax.

Petrol is €1.40 a litre
Diesel €1.05 a litre

Diesel is kinda cheap as fuel, but seriously the tax is ridiculous.
My dad has a 2005 Ford Focus diesel which is 1245kg if I remeber correctly, and he pays 1300 a year for tax.

Yep tax is measured by weight of the car and type of fuel. ;).

So whether you have a Corsa 1.2 or Corsa GSi, tax won't be much higher.

I don't know about jobs atm. The recession hit us hard, I'm sure of that. And the Netherlands may be one of the few countries where you don't have to learn the language to be able to live tehre.. You can manage with English easily.

well your diesel is cheaper so i guess they make that up with road tax. here, the unleaded is between £1.03-£1.10, taking into account the exchange rate its very similar. the good thing you have though is if your a low mileage driver like me, you wouldnt be paying as much up front.
Yeah we been hit extremely hard over here by the recession, and no signs of ending yet. A freind of mine works in Amsterdam at the mo and loves it.

@Matthew, how about getting an affordable car to tax and insure, they hit new driver like crazy, so go for a 1.0 and forget souping it up. once you have a year or 2 of no claims you can get a 1.4 diesel turbo or somthing. and, find a freind whos a mechanic, honestly, my first car, a MkII Escort 1.3 with carbs jetted as 1.6 ;) i went through 3 engines, 5 gearboxes, 11 petrol pumps, 3 distributors, front slam panel, front wing, 4 track control arms, welded a new rear quarter on, broke and replaced rear axle. quite a lot of work for my dad, LOL. so i never had to make a claim on insurance, as i didnt actually hit any other cars.

older cars are fun too, lots of character. i remember my mates Datsun Sunny, used to drive along behind him on the motorway, and when he reached 70mph the front wings would start flapping!! lol, all the mounting bolts were rusted away. he had a vent on the bonnet as standard too, what a boy! lol.

p.s. skodas make great rally cars :) and very practical, i like mountain biking so i love to throw a bike or 4 in the back.

you can get an old astra on an r reg 1.4 3 door for around 600 pounds. quick car for the engine size and way cheaper on insurance than any of the others mentiond. im 36 and have owned 5 of them over the years. really easy to smarten up as well with lots of after market wheels and mods.

Yea im not sure, i was looking at a 1.1 Saxo the other day with low mileage!
@Gareth about finding a mate who's a mechanic, ive just got an apprenticeship at Volkswagen, so im fine on that front :)
