It looks very likely that F1 cars will be returning to wider cars and lower wings by 2017, so let’s take a look back at the last year before the narrower “grooved tyre” era began in 1998.
It’s the sixth race of the 1997 season, and we follow Jean Alesi (Benetton), Heinz-Harald Frentzen (Williams), Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine (Ferrari) during the formation lap and the start of the race. Frentzen’s teammate Jacques Villeneuve went on to win the race, one of his seven wins during his championship year, ahead of a very impressive Olivier Panis in the Prost.
