Thinking about making a GTR2 sound mod

Recently, I found the "Sounds of GTR2" (https://www.racedepartment.com/downloads/sounds-of-gtr2.22872/) sound mod for all the original content cars in GTR2, and was really hyped to try it. Just did, and I wasn't impressed. I had deluded myself into thinking it might be kinda rough, but somewhat comparable to the sounds for the RSS GT pack for AC, for example – NOPE, it's definitely not even close.

But it got me thinking: the only thing not yet upgraded in the Anniversary Patch and HQ MODS (I believe) is the engine sounds. Perhaps it's time we tried to bring the sounds of GTR2 into the 2020s?

So before going to sleep, I dug around for some YouTube videos that could serve as high-quality samples for onboard sounds. And there's a fair amount out there, especially for some cars. I'll post these links below. Some of these will be well-known to many out there, but others are recent additions to the world of YouTube onboards!

So people "discovering" those files today are not impressed, any more than you would be by a VHS movie today. (A quick check of an external drive shows around 90 downloaded sound files for GTR2 alone, totaling around 2.5gig; enough to keep people happily, or irritatedly, tweaking for ages.)

As an electronics engineer (specializing in audio) and race driver I naturally had an interest in better sim sounds. My first were available on AOL and Compuserve (remember them, lol) for ICR2 and NASCAR2, these led to work with Sierra (quite welcome, at that time my "real" job was designing upgrades to commercial cable equipment). Later, sounds for the old F1GP series, SCGT, GPL, Rally Trophy, NASCAR4, N2k2, etc. were on RSC. I virtually quit after that, except for a few files for my own use (currently working on sounds for the old GP37 mod).

Admittedly, I actually was somewhat "impressed" by Mildrew's sounds... but yeah, they're not comparable in quality to, say, what you can find in Assetto Corsa, for example.

Are there any especially good engine sounds you'd be able to share? It seems that most of these have disappeared from the internet with the demise of NoGrip.

do you have those *.PLR files (or what ever type they are)
I remember that I have seen on them some stuff that I want to try on GTR2. Like the non pop-up LOD system.

Just came across this, and was wondering about correct sounds for the Datsun 240Z for GTR2 ?
I have Audacity as well and was wondering how hard it is to do the sound files. I've looked at the file structure and with the right tools I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Of course I know next to noting about it, but...

Of course it would be possible! The essence of it is to find sound samples by grabbing small snippets from onboards/flybys on YouTube then set up/edit the AUD text file. If you look back through this thread, there are some tutorials that can get you started.

The big thing is that the process of getting sound samples and getting them sounding good in-game using the AUD file is finicky. This is why I (for now) moved on from my own poor GTR2 sound modding attempts even though I found nice onboards.

You need nice internal and external on and off throttle sounds, and you have to figure out to which RPM each sound file corresponds. You will need to use creative pitch shifting to have a constant(ish) RPM for each sound file. They also need to loop cleanly. One trick is to take whatever sound sample you have, copy it, reverse it, then put the reversed one back to back with the original - that way, it loops smoothly. Audacity can do all this. Its pitch shifting is crude, but serviceable, if you use "Sliding Stretch" cleverly.

Do a spectrum analysis of the sample and note the prominent frequency, that will be the firing of the cylinders. Using that and the number of cylinders you can compute the rpm fairly closely.

If you can find an onboard of a car that includes RPM telemetry, you can also just listen closely, paying attention to how the engine note and transmission whine sounds at different RPMs and speed.
