The SimFeedback-AC DIY Motion Simulator thread

Hey guys. Thought I’d create a thread for those taking the plunge into this brilliant DIY project..
I will be starting mine soon and I know there are others thinking about it.. so feel free to share your knowledge and experiences so we can all enjoy this platform to its full potential. A huge thanks to the developers who have really knocked this one out of the park!

For all the internals for the actuator contact Amy - skye@ntl-bearing.com
She can supply everything you need. Just remind her you want the ends of the shafts chamfered and make sure she sends the right sized ball screw - we have had a couple of issues reported. She is very helpful though and the cost is pretty good.

Huge thanks to @RowanH for writing a comprehensive user guide which can be accessed here - https://www.rowanhick.com/sfx-100-build-and-running-guide

In addition, @anton_Chez has contributed a list of post numbers for some of the important settings etc..

I will try to keep this page updated with links to source the parts in other parts of the world. Just post whatever links you have and i'll add them here.

Please note: Not all the parts listed below are essential for the project. For the essential parts refer to the original shopping list.

@anton_Chez After what you said about using your 8020 channel nuts in the Kinetik profile I found a bunch I didn't know I still had left over from the P1 build, so did some tests. They're a small fit but do work, but my only concern was the very minimal overlap along one edge if the nut wasn't exactly centred, almost like the channel nut could pull out under a lot of force (it probably wouldn't). So what I did was plop an M8 washer on top of the channel nut INSIDE the profile, to act like... well, like a washer really.

There's zero change of the nut pulling out now, and when cranked up it seems solid as a rock.
The black stuff under the nut in the photo is just a strip of neoprene to locate the nut until it's tightened. The neoprene is pulled out afterwards.
Thinking about it, I could actually use an M10 or M12 washer for a bit more surface area. M8 seems to work fine though.
I think I'll run with this, seems a shame not to use those nuts.

I had the same thing :)

If you change the website language to German (top right hand corner of the page) then hit the drop-down box for country, you'll see "großbritannien". Select that and confirm, then you can switch language back to English.

Hi all, it might come as no surprise to some that I joined the SFX project team to help @saxxon66 and the rest of the core team, to work on some official documentation. Here it is ...

https://opensfx.com/2019/02/20/welcome-to-our-new-site/

If you're building your SFX system, or about to build one hopefully there's some good info along with community videos to help you out.

Also, if you've got any good pictures of your awesome rigs to share, please msg me and I'll get them up on the showcase page when I upload the next batch.

Enjoy !

What a bloody fantastic community this is. Top work Rowan!

I certainly wouldn't have even entertained my build, let alone complete it without the encouragement, support and help of others.

Humbling stuff.

Trying to order the alum extrusions and other parts for the SFX-100 actuators from Kinetic from the shopping list. When I attempt to check out and put in my USA based address there is no "USA" available from the drop down list. Anyone not able to order these from the USA?

Forgive me if this is an improper question here, but I've read the license, this seems okay, is there anyone out there who's bought a printer and is offering to print the 3D parts? For the appropriate fee of course.

Harry posted this on the DCS forum. He's the guy that has been working on the DCS plugin for us Fight sim guys. Check out how the engine vibes at low RPM jerk the cockpit around! Has anyone else here tried the latest plugin for DCS?

Thanks so much @saxxon66 . I should have figured that out on my own.

I've put the order in but at checkout it forced me to "make an offer" rather than allow me to simply pay for it. I assume they will contact me with a final price w/ shipping. Does this process sound familiar?

That's interesting, I just tried to place my order, but I didn't have to make an offer. I was directed to email or call to discuss shipping to the U.S.

The wording might not quite be translating correctly - what they will do is "make you an offer". Essentially they will calculate shipping and send you the final price/order confirmation pdf you will choose to accept and pay that offer (or equally choose not to accept)

I had only tried my SFX-100 a couple times testing and configuring it in AC after completing my build on Monday and building a case for the controllers (6u cabinet rack). Tonight though I went all the way and tried it inside my Oculus VR and with my GS-5 seat in iRacing. The combination of VR, motion and force were amazing and they compliment each other so well! The SFX-100 gives you such a solid feel for the road and attitude of your car, while the GS-5 adds in sustained pressure of g-forces, wow! I thought it might be too much, and it can be violent, but it feels so real and I left the test session with the biggest smile I have had in my sim rig iterations. I had my Oculus sensor (only one) hard mounted above my wheel. I will probably be hard mounting it there it worked so well and felt so good. Very very happy with this project and could not be more appreciative of the core team for the instructions and knowledge sharing!

Thanks for the clarification, Rowan.

I have a slightly dumb question, familiarizing myself with all of the components and build process, why does the shopping list call for 32 M8 thread inserts? With 4 profiles, and 4 per actuator. I'm not sure I understand where the other 16 thread inserts are going.

Thanks.
