The Gran Turismo 5 Hot Lap Challenge

Welcome to the RaceDepartment Gran Turismo 5 Hot Lap Challenge. All you need to take part is a Playstation 3, a copy of Gran Turismo 5 and the desire to test your skills each week against your fellow RaceDepartment members.

The format is simple, each week a car and track will be chosen to run hot laps. Starting Saturday 12pm GMT and finishing the following Saturday 12pm GMT you will be invited to submit your lap times for that challenge. Once the challenge deadline is met the the next track and car is chosen, this choice will alternate each week between the fastest driver and slowest driver, if no choice is made before 12PM GMT on Sunday the challenge organiser will make the choice.

To take part start up GT5 and select 'Arcade Mode' and then select 'Time Trial'. You will then select the track chosen for that weeks challenge and then the car. The car and track selection for each week will be listed below. Once you have done that you will be prompted to set the driving options. We will used a fixed format for each week which will be:

Transmission - Manual
Front Tyres - Racing: Soft (Unless otherwise specified)
Rear Tyres - Racing: Soft (Unless otherwise specified)
Driving Line - OFF
Traction Control - OFF
Skid Recovery Force - OFF
Active Steering - OFF
Active Stability Management (ASM) - OFF
ABS - 1
Grip Reduction On Wet Track/Track Edge - REAL

Once you've selected that you can then start hot lapping. There are no tuning options so everyone runs the same setup.

GT5 will invalidate laps where the track is cut to gain an advantage, times shown in red in GT5 are invalid and will not count in this competition. To make it fair and competitive please don't cut the track or abuse the run off area's to gain an advantage, at least half the car should be on the track at all times and on street tracks don't use the barriers to give you an unfair advantage, the idea of the hot lap challenges is to run clean laps in the fastest time possible.

Good luck and above all have fun!

Hay guys, I know I'm off topic, but as I was trying to do some laps in Laguna Seca and I Noticed that my car brakes sometimes all by himself!
I use a Driving Force Logitech whell and I have no problem's playing Race. Any ideas??

Thks

The second corner is just a short brake after the last marker (and I use 3rd gear in the corner), very important to not get on the throttle too soon or you will loose a lot of time.

3rd to last corner is a short lift, but it's hard to explain.

2nd to last, I haven't found the perfect line there yet ;)

2nd corner after the hairpin like ben said is best in 3rd gear, I get the best results when I trail brake into the corner. Quick stab on the brakes (not 100% but about 30-50%) then feather the throttle, at or immediately after the apex you should be on almost full throttle. 3rd corner is a high speed 4th gear corner. You can move onto the sand and let that slow you down or slight dab on brakes to transfer weight then turn in using all available tarmac and runoff area.

The corkscrew is tricky funny thing is I dont have a braking point for it, so its hit or miss at times, I downshift to 2nd gear if I overshoot the braking point, then quickly upshift to 3rd before I enter the corner. Best results are when you cut (term used to imply taking more than usual tarmac and rumble strip not 3 wheels off track etc.) the first part and stay as close as possible to the second part (the downhill sweeping right), because if you dont the car will lose traction on more than one tire (ie. jump) which in turn loses grip, acceleration the list goes on.

The down hill sweeping left after the corkscrew I turn in just after the tire marks start lifting off slightly then power back on before I hit the apex, using as much track as possible on exit.

The banked right hander following is a 4th gear corner for me, its important no to get eager and take an early apex as that ruins your exit speed. Take a slightly later than normal apex help yourself to some inside rumble strip and full power after you hit the rumble strip.

After that 18.6 lap I think it's possible to get within low 18 high 17 range. To do that in a lap is not that hard, but to do it at pace is, so I usually start slow not try to over cook every corner and when I have an idea about how it should go that's when I start to apply some different lines techniques etc.

GL guys, I'm actually really loving this combo.

Thanks for the great coaching, is there any way to upload logged in data? Or even a screenshot of the area around the corkscrew would do a world of good in learing new techniques, especially if we can compare the braking & lateral g-force graphs that would be very helpful. How about the winner uploading the data at the end of the week for others to learn? :)

I have heard of this before. When it happens do you get the red brake indicator on screen come on? If you do it is your brake pedal sticking as the spring is on it's way out.

Congratulations Cristian, fastest driver again this week - is anyone going to topple him next week? Once again a good turn out, thanks to everyone taking part. Sorry the results were a little slow being posted but I've been working this weekend. The next challenge will follow shortly.
