DiRT 4 So, first impressions? Where does it stand versus DR?

Quattro is notoriously understeery and the stage is fairly fast flowing, so no reason for any big slides, but still, they're very much there - 0:53, 1:06, 1:22, 1:32, 1:45, 1:52, 2:02... I pretty much gave up at the 2 minute mark as we could be here all night.
 
The cars in D4 doing exactly what I see in all onboards and especially the 2000 AWD feel like in DR and spend the most time with them. Maybe it's a question of driving technique. I always break before entry and turn the car towards the apex, even if it would go without.
 
Getting used to D4 now in terms of the rally discipline, liking Spain the most.

Just did the weekly event in Spain and got this:

Total Event Time is completely wrong! My actual time should be about 42 mins 16 seconds, putting me in tier 2 comfortably.

Sad times :(
 
Did the weekly Group B 4WD last night with the Delta S4 on tarmac.
Jesus Christ, this car is anything but stable! Lots of sliding, also possible to drift only controlled by acceleration (If your balls are big enough :ninja:) Mine weren't all the time :cautious::laugh:
The handling seems very realistic to me as this beast of a car just wants to release its sheer power! Played a bit with the setup but still it was a challenge and that's what I expect from this game! And it still was better to drive than in DR.

@Martin Fiala I think you're far to negative about this game regarding the physics. My suggestion is that you improve your skills (please don't take this personally!!), play a bit with the setup and get usedf to the game. Don't know how quick you were in DR, but I was quite good there in the Kadett and after 3 days in D4 the Kadett is back there where I want to have him. Just a matter of training sometimes...
 
a couple of recent thoughts about DiRT 4 has anyone else noticed how 'slow' the R5 cars are to accelerate recently? also, compared to the speedo the scenery isnt wizzing past as fast as i think it should be?!

also im quite annoyed there doesnt seem to be any original liveries, steam workshop compatibility so far.. it seems like its been released unfinished or something? *shrug*

I know we have a livery editor, but there isn't much selection. And sometimes a livery on one car looks awful on another. Feel like that could be fleshed out a bit more.

There are original liveries included, but you have to unlock them in the career I think. When buying a used car they are mostly white. But I do have some original liveries for the cars I own in my garage so far...

whoops! i missed the important part of that... I mean in terms of racedepartment downloads like DR ;) although yes, there more original liveries included in the game this time.

I think the R5's have been slowed from when the game first released..

yeah we have livery editor but as you say IRL one livery on one car looks awful on another, but also IMO if in IRL i would be lucky enough to have a selection of older cars (i do have a Talbot Sunbeam which i must still do something with. however..) i would want to run them in a historic livery probably.

I'm trying to be as positive as I can, but the game is making it really hard (and some of the fans are making it even harder). I was looking forward to D4 quite a lot, so trust me, it's not enjoyable for me to criticize it. But I can't overlook what seems like obvious and fundamental flaws to me, sorry. If D4 was the only sim I've ever played and if I've never driven a car in my life, then maybe I could believe that every other sim got it wrong. But that's not the case, sadly, far from it. Setup changes (I've played with them a fair bit) can make the cars feel somewhat better, but the underlying issues still remain.

As for how quick I was in DR, well, I wasn't contending for the top spots (and I'll probably never be in any sim), but I was pretty consistently in the top tier of the daily/weekly/monthly challenges most of the time, usually around 20-30 seconds off pace on the short stages (and obviously around double on the long ones). And I'd call my skills fairly adequate, I think.
 
That Quattro onboard shows probably the most understeery AWD car ever. On top of that I recall Jari-Matti saying he didn't turn turbo boost in stages during a walk around that car (you can find it on YT). Barely enough power to send that rigid diffs driven beast into massive powerslide.
 
Rally cross feels better than in DR. I'm still getting used to the gravel but it's not bad. DR had too much of a floaty feel even on tarmac. I've only done road racing and can say tarmac is better on d4.

I dont believe that is correct from the wording to what i meant. for example if i wanted the 555 livery for the 95 Impreza i wouldnt want it on the Hyundai I20.. and therefore in reverse, if i wanted the Hyundai WRC livery i wouldnt want it for the Escort MKII for example. so it that way its exactly the same as Dirt Rally?!

Yes and no. The whole idea with a career livery from Codemasters, which I agree with, is that you have a set of sponsors, colors and patterns that are on your cars, not that you have different sponsors and stuff on each car.
For the non-career cars, it is the same as DiRT Rally, but the quote is regarding the career cars, and Codemasters idea.

ok, so a modder like rallygamer, 'could' decide a livery within the livery editor he will change and for each car he wants to make a livery for and only change the file for each car?

i disagree about the career liveries, as teams would have different liveries for each car to suit the car, and i hate there is no option to save liveries as that would make the ability to change the colours depending on the car your driving much easier. however im almost through the Rally Career, so only Historic career to do then im good for career.
 
I get what you mean. I haven't tried Rallycross yet so am only judging based on DR v D4 but the back end thing seems rather hit and miss. The cars straighten up if you don't really work at getting it out and then its so much slower to do so that there is no point doing it. I notice more on acute turns where you need to pop a bit of handbrake to break traction. I had gotten to the point in DR where I rarely needed to touch the HB in order to throw the back out but in D4 even with the HB it straightens up and I often end up still going at the outer edge of the corner and needing to hit the HB again or hold it on to get around.

Why do you think(what is the reason) that there is a different model for RX v Rally? It makes no sense to me because it would mean a whole new set of physics for exactly the same cars. Would need to be 100% intentional to make them different.
