It has been confirmed that Sebastian Vettel has signed a multi-year agreement with Aston Martin.
- The news comes in the wake of Sergio Pérez announcing his departure from the team that will become Aston Martin next season.
- The four-time world champion will join the current Racing Point team after being released by Ferrari.
- Lawrence Stroll's bid to bring Aston Martin to the front of the grid has seemingly stepped up a gear after attracting the signature of a world champion.
It had been rumoured since Sebastian Vettel's departure from Ferrari was confirmed, that Lawrence Stroll had his eye on bringing the German to his team, to lead them into a new era as they take on the Aston Martin name.
With last night's news that Sergio Pérez would be departing the team at the end of this season, it all but confirmed these suspicions. While no contract length has been made public, the official announcement stated that Vettel had committed for "2021 and beyond."
After a tough few seasons with Ferrari, Vettel seemed buoyed by the new project:
“I am pleased to finally share this exciting news about my future. I’m extremely proud to say that I will become an Aston Martin driver in 2021.
"It’s a new adventure for me with a truly legendary car company. I have been impressed with the results the team has achieved this year and I believe the future looks even brighter.
"The energy and commitment of Lawrence [Stroll] to the sport is inspiring and I believe we can build something very special together.
"I still have so much love for Formula 1 and my only motivation is to race at the front of the grid. To do so with Aston Martin will be a huge privilege.”
The move is a massive statement from Aston Martin, with the Silverstone-based team no doubt eager to challenge for the top three next season. Vettel's new boss, Otmar Szafnauer is optimistic that the German, who has won 53 races, will be able to help them take the next step forward:
“Everybody at Silverstone is hugely excited by this news. Sebastian is a proven champion and brings a winning mentality that matches our own ambitions for the future as Aston Martin F1 Team.
"On a Saturday or Sunday afternoon, Sebastian is one of the best in the world, and I can’t think of a better driver to help take us into this new era. He will play a significant role in taking this team to the next level.”
While Vettel was unable to emulate his hero, Michael Schumacher's achievements in leading Ferrari back to world championships, it is great that he will still be on the grid next season after being dropped by the Scuderia. He is a great character and the sport would have been a lesser place without him.
It remains to be seen whether the incumbent, Sergio Pérez will find a new drive ahead of next season. Since his announcement yesterday, he has made it known that he "was surprised" by the decision, after receiving a phone call from Lawrence Stroll the same day:
“I got a call from Lawrence...He called me yesterday, that they were going into another direction.
“In the end they just officially told me yesterday that I am not continuing. I didn’t expect that. But it’s how it is.”
With this most recent driver confirmation, the grid for next season has begun to take shape. It is widely expected that Canadian, Lance Stroll will partner Vettel in 2021. With Hamilton likely to extend his relationship with Mercedes, seats realistically only remain with Alfa Romeo and Haas.
With his future in Formula One sorted, Vettel can enjoy celebrating his current team's 1000th race in the sport, barely 100km away from their home of Maranello.
