One of the big problems on the start of a race is that everyone is bunched together.

Situational awareness is utmost important at this time. Unfortunately, there is so much going on in front of you, it's really, really hard to be totally aware of the cars behind you. You have to count on them doing the right thing. There are so many folks making their "daring" move at the start, that it is easy to lose someone when they disappear into your blindspot. Again, this is why one has to "trust" the guys behind, while you are trying to do the right thing, so that the guys in front of you can trust you. When someone disappears in one's blindspot, one has to assume that they are along side and are making an attempt to pass. Now's the time to leave some room and try to take a line that will protect yourself, but not obstruct the other driver.

It is the overtaker's responsibility to make a clean pass. The one being overtaken is responsible for holding their line. The overtaker needs to respect the other driver's right to be where they are, and should always assume that the one being overtaking is going to take a normal line and not roll over and play dead. Unfortunately, at times the overtaker assumes that they have the right to the preferred line and take it before they have earned it.

At the start, some folks mired in the back are really quick, but for one reason or another (bad qualifying or bad luck in the 1st race) are relegated behind slower driver. They know they are quick and nimble and sometimes in their rush to make up for their misfortunes, mix it up with drivers that aren't accustomed to such wild moves. This just adds more hair to a hairy mess. I've said it before (but they thinks it's just a joke), but if they are that quick and nimble, they will make it through to their level, usually before the 1st lap is over. But, they want to do it by the first turn. All I can say, is that they will float to their level (and I've heard what floats from friends who work in the sewers).
