Time for my reports.

Came into this meeting pretty pumped after my exciting battles in the Mini's that evening:).

So this was my 2nd visit to Birmingham in one night after never driving here b4. This the shorter track, but hoping to do well regardless. Chose my Pug 308, but soon got a shock:excruciating:. The car handled dreadfully around here and I was considering dumping it. Decided to try and work it out, but right through practice it didn't feel to promising. Though I did get it feeling a little more stable b4 qualifying started.

Qual: 12th. Aargh terrible lap trying too hard:dont-know:.

Race 1: 5th. What on earth!!! All of a sudden I found that my pace wasn't too bad once in the race. Everyone else seemed to be going slower than in praccy and Qual where as I wasn't doing bad at all. Didn't drive a perfect race, but after the pitstops I was surprised to be running so high and though I had some attention from behind I managed to keep the car where I wanted it and brought her home.:)

Race 2: 4th. Good start from p3 and kept out of trouble in T1. Tried to keep with the front guys and I didn't drop of much at all. Keith soon ended up catching me, but I've managed to deal better with someone challenging my position recently and decided I wouldn't let him by easily. He eventually pitted and I knew he was going to pump some good laps in, but I decided to stick with my usual late stop and see where it left me. Stayed out longer than the front guys and came in on lap 12 whilst leading. As I left the pits Keith had just gone by and I was down to 4th. Kept pushing on keeping in touch with the top3 waiting in hope of a incident between them. It eventually came when Marty had a run in and he was not far ahead. I gathered he must of had some damage as I was now closing quite quickly, but I didn't have enough laps to have a go for 3rd.

So an eventful and somewhat confusing event. My pace seemed so distant in practice, but not so bad in the races. I also feel I'm starting to improve my ability to fight with others without giving places up too easily which is very pleasing for me. After a gr8 meeting at Interlagos in the Camero's, Wednesday night at Mid America in the WTCC and then Fridays Mini's and this event I'm getting my confidence up and feeling more assured racing with you guys at RD. Top 5 results in all but one of those races and some good finishes the week b4 in F3000's and S2000's I'm really enjoying my time here at RD now and feeling relaxed on track. A definate sign of improvement:wink2:.

I gotta ask because Ive been noticing this nearly every club race: What happened to the pit limiter rule?I'm nearly getting rear ended by people speeding in the pit lane at every official practice prior to the races. Is it not required during practice?

Not really required if its just a few people on the server practising. Once the event starts the pit limiter is required in all sessions. Its not as much of a problem in Evo as you can drive through each others cars.

Only vote if you plan to attend the event!!
Poll closes on June 14th

Please read:
  • Click here to read the password and golden rules!
  • It is a VERY long endurance event. If you tend to leave an event after a minor crash, you should NOT sign up. It is for the hardcore enduro guys who can manage with the occasional "you have a suspension problem" message.
  • The event will have a broadcast as well as live timings
  • A practice server will be setup on June 14th (once the poll closes)
  • In case if we get a lot of sign ups, I will give priority to whoever finished at Paul Ricard:)

!!!Important!!!

We will start the race with all the participants. If you drop during warmup or while getting on the grid we WILL restart the race. We might need to do a parade lap to make sure everyone has the proper gird position (I will take care of all book keeping)

So, the race day is coming, being the kind of guy I am (good or bad, it depends of point of view ) I couldn’t let this one go by without posting about it…

To many of you this isn’t new, so just jump ahead as this will be a long post. On other hand, if it helps just one of you, I’m already happy :wink2:

In this 3rd Evo endurance event here at RD (in recent times), after visiting Spa and Paul Ricard, we will be at the mythical Nordschleife (aka Nord Loop, aka old Nürburgring, aka Der and only true Nürburg-ring). We will be doing a little bit more than 500 km and if the weather doesn’t pay any surprise it should take us also a little bit more than 2.5 hrs.

Well, to be true this event will be a "monster", the circuit is “harder” than Spa even when considering Eau Rouge and don’t be fooled by the longer duration of the Paul Ricard event either (3 hrs) as this track is about 2.5x narrower than it and room for mistake is much smaller.

Overtaking at the Nord

On the contrary to the popular believe there aren’t many places to do it over the 20+ km lap of the Nord.
The best and the only true overtaking zone of the Nord is the “power hill” area around the toll straight (Castel to the right into Tiergarten) where typical draft overtaking can be done easily if there are the hp to go along with it (the track is much wider here too).
So yes, be prepared to do 16 km behind that slightly slower driver waiting for the power hill…

In general overtaking is all about getting (wining) a better line than your adversary and not bumping him out of the way (more on this later at the end of the post*).

Other overtaking points that require more skill and little bit of luck are some of the hard braking areas around the track.

  • Aremberg (km 3) – It is easier to do it from the inside line (be careful with understeer, don’t hit the other car on the outside), but can be done from an outside line (harder and be careful with understeer/ oversteer and hitting the inside car).
  • Bergwerk (km 9) – Taking the Inside line while breaking into this right hander (again be careful with too much understeer hitting the outside line car).
  • Karussell (km 12) – With a good exit from the previews turn (hard breaking from a very quick area) it is possible to win the inside line (the quickest) to the karussell (just be careful not to hit outside car when entering the concrete banking).
  • Tiergarten (km 19) – With a mother of a long hard breaking is possible (and hard) to win the inside line to the final chicane into the pit area (very dangerous nevertheless as the understeer can be mortal for both cars).

A better tactic and perhaps easier (and safer) than disputing breaking points along the narrow Nord is to wait… along the 16 to 17 km leading into the power hill, the adversary is likely to do small line mistakes somewhere. Stay close (not too close) and capitalize on them while he exits his “wrong” and slower turn exit, typical places for this to happen are:

  • Adenaurer Forst (km 5) – Power exiting and overtaking after this S.
  • Wehrseifen (km 7) –The front racer understeers into the tight downhill S and the behind racer capitalizes taking the inside line.
  • Ex – Mühle (km 8) – Usually the mistake here is oversteering, so capitalize on that and again carefully power exit from an outside line (inside line works too if the front racer is understeering).
  • Brünnchen (km 14) – After the famous (infamous) right turn (specially with rain) the usual mistake of the front racer is too much entry speed and the corresponding understeer, power through the small valley on the inside line.

All the above overtaking situations are possible and some require more “help” from the front racer than others. Of course all the above doesn’t take into account giving laps situations or when the front racer permits the overtaking. Speaking of this, as most of you know it isn’t well seen in endurance racing aggressive line defenses unless the final of the event is thereabouts. The reason is simple, the all idea of defending a line for 2.5 hrs is kind of a mute point, so avoid extremely defensive slow inside lines and parking the car in the middle of the track (opt for a line when going into a turn, don’t use the “middle” line).

Regarding overtaking (last but not least), here stay some common public server overtaking mistakes.

On the Nord there are 2 very fast one line sections:

  • Flugplatz area (km 1-3) – Speeds up to 300km (GTP)
  • Kesselchen area (km 9 -11) – Speeds up to 280km (GTP)

These zones are absolute “one liners”.

Just because the 2nd racer (the one behind) is in the slipstream and is much faster this doesn’t give him the right to force an overtaking. Even if the 2nd racer goes side by side it is very dangerous for both as these zones require crossing lines to be made at high speed.

Other “one liner” areas but done at average speeds (3rd, 4th gear) are:

  • Km 6 to 7, km 12 to 14 (big one) and km 15 to 16.

"Danger" areas
Ok, the track is “hard” as I typed earlier, but in truce is not as “mortal” as other known tracks. A good example of this is Le Mans 77, a less forgiving circuit.
Unless someone falls asleep, the only true “mortal” (kills the engine) areas are the long hard breaking into the final S before the pits (Tiergarten) and the breaking into Wehrseifen (km 7) as there is a barrier on the outside of the track.

All other common exiting areas (Aremberg (km 3), Metzgesfeld (km 6), Ex – Mühle (km 8), Bergwerk (km 9), the all Karussell area (km 12), Hohe Acht (Km 13), Brünnchen (km 14), Pflanzgarten (km 15), Schwalbenschwanz (km 16) and Galgenkpf (Km 17)) will give you a lost spliter/wing and maybe a lost wheel, but the car will move along “limping” to the pits (once it took me 16 minutes on 3 wheels to undo a mistake in the Aremberg area).

*Finely and speaking of bumping and accidents; remember, each touch on another car is on average about 1 to 3 km/h less when arriving at one of the 3 high speed areas for both cars. So those small bumps and touches that somewhat are acceptable in Mini or STCC/WTCC sprint races are far from welcome here.

Just as an example, on a recent race at a public server I was bumped from behind 3 times at a few breaking points (heavily but no suspension or wing damage), the car was doing 10 to 15 km speed less up-hill top speed.

Ok, this is sufficinent, sorry for the long post, hope it is posted in a way it permits you jump the parts you don't want to read.

Just to finish, there will be 2 races within one, 2 separate classifications, but as always in this endurance events, it will be all about finishing it. So good luck to all and lets all overtake this new challenge :good:.

Well, after just 4 laps I am out. My own fault. Lost my rear wing and forgot to remap my pit menu keys. I have the seat adjustments mapped to the arrow keys now. Sorry to both Audi's I hit. 1 on lap one and the other on lap 3. Andrew, I hope you didn't take to much damage when you hit me. I didn't get a chance to get out of your way. Sorry.

Man, I am scheduled to work the night of the 27th. Think I will try and get the day off. So, this is a tentative GTS signup. :) Will update with a clear yes or no this coming week.

In case if we get a lot of sign ups, I will give priority to whoever finished at Paul Ricard
Does watching the entire race on the server count? :D :p

You are the man. Thank you!
