Works pretty good

Nurburgring combined

Clouds + 02:30 PM
No rain
No timescale
6 AI visible

Nvidia control panel : max texture quality + lod negative bias CLAMP
AA level 5
Circuit detail + cockpit detail + texture detail MAX ULTRA

ALL the rest deactivated or low

I made a compromise : deactivate mirrors.

Supersampling 169% (correspond to 1.3 pixel per... On oculus debug tool
I use open Composite not steam vr.

FIRST LAP 9 MIN
Some stuttering especially first 3 minutes.
Then good performance.

I prefer to make qualif but works with race.

Good image quality.
Thanks for the tips, I'm willing to give anything a try :)
I've printed your settings out, and will try them tonight when I get back home

So, after a few days of testing, here are my conclusions. Maybe it'll help some of the people that're also experiencing problems.
I've managed to get it running again, after having to make more compromises than I really wanted to.
We're talking about VR hier, BTW: at least on my system, pancake mode runs without problems. My 1080 can handle everything I want to throw at it. I can drive with maximum everything, time acceleration, and 60 AI. Runs between 75-135fps, and looks stunning.
VR? That's another story. No weather, no time acceleration, only during the day, only 19 AI. Everything on medium, low, or turned off ( shadows, particles etc )
I think that rF2 is just incredibly badly optimized for VR. I tested Le Mans at 3pm with all the settings turned down far enough for 80fps, with NO AI. I drove completely alone round the track. I tried the GT3 cars, and the LMP2. Both official DLC from rF2, not some add on from the library, just to rule badly written addon content out as a possible reason for the bad performance.
Despite that, at certain points on the track, the fps drops to 40 momentarily, for no good reason that I can see. The same with the Nordschleife.
I recognise that my 1080 GPU is two generations behind, from 2016. But AMS2 runs wonderfully, at much higher settings, with all the goodies dialled in.
But AMS2 has a much more modern game engine I hear you say. That's true, but what about R3E? That uses what is basically the same game engine as rF2 and runs butter smooth at high settings on my system, and looks (and sounds), stunning. Shame about the shite FF in R3E though....
I have decided to bite the bullet, and drop €900 on a 3080 as soon as they're available. It seems to be the only way out as compensation for the terrible track optimisation from rF2, and their glacialy slow working pace. How's the 3-year UI getting on BTW? ;)
It's a measure of how much I love rF2 that I'm prepared to drop €900 on a new GPU just so that I can run fF2 like it is supposed to be run: for endurance racing by night and day, to simulate 12 and 24 hour endurance races. That's the whole point of rF2 for me. If I just want to drive 10 lap sprint races, I don't need rF2, there are other Sims that do that, while looking visually much nicer than rF2.
Here in Germany, the 3090 is available in limited quantities, the 3070 too. The 3090 is too expensive (nearly two grand ), the 3070 too slow for what it costs. The 3080 is the sweet spot for me, but, of course, wouldn't you know it, that's the one that is not available at the moment. I'm trawling the Internet every day, and as soon as they're available I'm going to jump on it. I'm waiting for the new HP reverb G2 to arrive as well, they're both going to be early Christmas presents to myself :D

It totally depends what models and further how many models you run in a session

I run full settings 1440p pancake , prefer historic where models are less resource hungry

I like AC and AMS but historic content in overall sensations, physics, chassis, tyres

So my view is very one sided I can admit that

Who cares ... :)
