We are soon going to interview Marcel Offermans, the head of Studio 397 and the rFactor 2 racing simulation, and we want your questions!

The last few months have seen a whirlwind of development and improvements for rFactor 2, with some significant changes to the simulation taking place as well as a number of high profile car and track licence announcements - not least of which is the legendary combination of the Nordschleife and Le Mans 24 Hour circuits coming to the title.

Following on from the successful Automobilista 2 interview, I'm looking to tour round all the major developers and have a word about how things are going in their respective simulations - starting with a discussion with Studio 397 and their rFactor 2 racing title.

In order to ensure we get to the bottom of the questions our community want to know, I'm asking you to submit your questions for Marcel in the comments section below, and I'll do my best to ask as many of them as possible when we have a discussion next week.

Feel free to submit a question about anything and everything you always wanted to know about rFactor 2 in the comments section below!

    Thanks for this platform .

    • Is all content, ISI/3PA/S397-absorbed that has not been updated or fixed by now, going to be left as-is? Be it visual, Dx11 compatibility or technical updates since their original release spanning from the Historic Formula cars to modern material such as F-Renault 3.5 2014, Honda Civic BTCC, or even circuits like Mountain Peak or others?
    • Is encryption of everything here to stay? If so, will you provide updated material so the modders and interested users can have references?
    • Will there be templates for new driver model and gloves, and will the models be available to modders?
    • Can we expect shifting gears motion for drivers, shifter, sequential and H-pattern, and moving feet for drivers in cars?
    • Will content remain Euro-centric or is there concerted interest to provide North American cars and circuits, or Asian and Pacific contents?
    • Will the new UI allow for more details on Matchmaker? That means series, car name and other details, track configuration, etc
    • Is there work to develop hybrid technology support and features such as push to pass, to support recent w.i.p. mods and the 2014 Indycar?
    • How is the office setup for the owners/employees who call the Netherlands home? Do you spend time under the same roof or just meet up for beer and food?
    • What are your favorite car series/era and circuits? This is independent of what may be realistic or feasible for the game
    • To this day, what is your favorite game in the racing genre - any subcategory - in PC or consoles?

    Well, where to begin? :)
    Ok Paul, ask him please:
With implementation of the new material system inside cockpits do they have plans to make better, closer to rl cockpit models for current dlc cars(endurance, and both gt3s).
Also it's interesting to hear someting about update plans for historical content.

Already some modern endurance cars are in the game with LMP2 and GTE. But a lot are missing like the Ligier, Aston Martin Vantage, Ferrari 488 GTE and LMP1's. And with Le Mans coming up, it's gonna spice the things up ! So any chance to see more of these cars to fill the grid ?

It's always great to get another legendary and iconic track to race, but what about some (official) tools for endurance races like track limits and penalties editor or even simple tv style / live replay system for (even more exciting) live coverages from rF2? This could be helpful especially for 12 / 24h events.

Looking at AMS2 moving to the Madness Engine, ACC moving forward with UE4 and iRacing making some updates to include HDR/DX11/particles to their engine....where do you see the future of your graphics engine headed? Are you still committed to updating and improving the engine or do you feel it is still competitive with the pending releases coming in 2019?

I think the new UI has to be on top of there list now, I know it is something that they have to pay someone to do and they will not recoup that cost in the near future, although long term they will (increased user base).

Problem is, it is just not user friendly in the slightest, so it is very hard to attract new users, even losing some, that have worked it all out, but move on out of sheer frustration. People often ask me about RF2, my response is always the same, when it works it is brilliant, sadly it just does not always "just work" everything just seems overly complicated to me, even setting up an online server is a task and half.

Get the new UI released and I am certain that there "user base" will increase twofold ..that will mean more customers not just buying the sim/game but more customers buying the new tracks and cars, that we all love.

As we heard in recent roadmaps that you are improving the easthetics of car interior/cockpits; Are you thinking on including slip meters and night lightning in the cockpits as part of the improvements?

Second question is are you looking to work on various aspects such as clutch wear, gearbox temperature, better traction control systems, etc..

Kind Regards to S397 staff for all the work they have produced :D

Are there any lesser known cars or circuits you would like to get the licence for to add to the sim?

When you going to upgrade Eves ! ...at least put me out of my misery

How do you feel about letting people purchase new gen sim with totally inferior models and features ...........................upgrade the Eves or say no, either way I am not supporting DLC further till you do

    • I don't know how this works in terms of implementation; would there be a way to implement a function on the weather conditions imported from live sources (such as weatherundergrounds or other) so that the track temperature is not always at 29 degrees C regardless of air temperature? (maybe a factor between +4 and +6 degrees above air temperature, as a basic/silly example;
    • We have noticed that when swapping drivers in a race, the tyre wear gets carried over to the new driver when not changing tyres, but all flatspots (and possibly other tyre damage/conditions) seem to disappear. Is there a way to carry over this "tyre damage" data to the new driver or is it simply impossible? If possible, do you plan on implementing it or is it lower on the priority list?
Thank you for the opportunity and for your involvement with the community, always a pleasure to know you are around and among us so looking forward to the interview

Hybrid engines, better lighting/shadows and clouds/weather system, update of interior cars (shaders and LCD to match real ones), updated all old content to match with the new ones, UI, multiplayer system. I really like rF2 and support it but the feeling that rf2 is halved in all areas, nothing actually finished, polished, except for physics and ffb
