The best sound ever is the blown V8's they use in drag racing and monster truck racing - period!
However...
We shouldn't really expect something completely new to sound how we remembered it!
It is what it is, others will sound a little different, like with the bikes, to a tuned ear you don't have to look up to know it was a Honda, or a Ducati.
Over time we will come to recognise this as the sound of F1.
I agree with most of you - the sound probably isn't as pleasing as we would like, but hey, we could just turn over to World Superbike....

Listen on headphones or good speakers with a bit of volume. This sound is what f1 is in my humble opinion.

I think its amazing that in 2004 teams were unhappy about the fact it was one engine per race weekend and now it is 5 engines per season

Could sound nicer in high revs... should be a darker, lower noise.

I hope the final product gives a better sensation, I mean when they are actually racing... watching the cars on the track, etc. If not... it will just look like Go Karts on steroids.

The Mercedes sound isn´t the real sound but just the sound from the simulator, hence the slightly odd sound.

I´m sure it will sound alright, just wished they would have said you can build whatever engine you want instead.
Only rules would be,

100kg fuel for the race.
100kg/h fuel flow limit.

I think we would have seen some pretty interesting engines.

Andy Cowell, engineer at Mercedes, said the engine will sound pretty much like this. Maybe just slightly different but not much.

Yea the point is that it´s not sound from the actual car under load.
It´s sound from the engine-bench most likely.
