RDRC S9 Round 6 - Rally New Zealand (12th April - 18th April 2021)

What can I say... this rally did not quite go as planned.:(

Also, I see a pattern emerging since Rally Spain: Once more a stupid mistake early on caused me to limp my way through the rest of the Rally. Just way worse this time.

We had the spare car shipped directly to New-Zealand after finishing Argentina, so the mechanics had had plenty time to get it into tip-top shape. And they did, as SS1 and SS2 went fine; no issues there.

Early on in SS3 I slightly went wide in one of the One-Left's.
I drove on through the grass on the outside trying to get back on the road again, when suddenly a giant boulder emerged from the grass which damaged my radiator.:thumbsdown:

That radiator hole then started a chainreaction of faults and failures. I finished SS3 with overheated engine, then almost killed the engine in SS4 and had a massive off there, so bad that I couldn't find the road again and had to reset to avoid DQ. I then redesigned some of the scenery, and also killed that guy in front of the fence that apparently is not Jack Hintz but eventually we made it to the end of the stage.

SS5 started with a car so broken that I tried to just nurse it to the service, but I failed pretty badly.
Multiple crashes and punctures later, even the game itself suggested I'd give up, as a message saying
"SEVERE DAMAGE! SUGGEST RETIREMENT!"
appeared on my screen... Never seen that one before! :O_o:
And frankly at that point I was more than ready to actually do so, but being really close to the end of the stage I decided to not yet give up, and I eventually crawled into the service area. Phew.

It then quickly became obvious that message had come for a reason, as pretty much every part of the car was damaged, a lot of them heavy or critical.. Best thing to do: get some sleep first.:sleep:

When we woke up this morning, we figured if we'd take the maximum time penalty we could fix the radiator and wheel geometry, all else would have to wait.

So I started SS6 with a car with excellent steering but with a broken engine and turbo, so SS6 and SS7 turned into a scenic sunday morning drive. Thankfully Phil refrained from clever oneliners like "Are we down on power??!" so this stint actually felt rather relaxing..:coffee: Even on full throttle none of the bends posed much of a problem and I brought the car in in the exact same shape it was when I started this stint.

During the short service ahead of SS8 we decided to fix only the engine, again taking a major time penalty. But with this being a long stint we had good hopes it'd be worth it.

Despite still running with a broken turbo, the car had indeed regained some of its former speed. Which lead to a few small mistakes on SS8 but without new damage.
SS9 through SS11 went as well as they possibly could as a naturally-aspirated Lancia Delta is not quite a rocketship, but on the upside no further damage was inflicted either, to the car nor the surroundings.:D Just dust... LOTS of it

At the final service before SS12, we finally were able to fix the turbo. Albeit not within the time allowed, so we had another time penalty coming our way.. even without fixing the gearbox, dampers/springs, or anything else.

But.. at least we had some decent power again. So we strapped ourselves extra firmly in our chairs and went for it. And boy what a difference that turbo makes..

We were flying through the bends and straights again (at least in our own minds we were..) until about 3/4 in, the rear hit an outside bank which sent us into a double barrel roll which while pretty, significantly slowed us down..

After that no more hiccups until the end though so we could actually finish another rally.

No points scoring though, other than maybe for our execution of several gymnastic moves..:roflmao:

Anyhow, despite us making somewhat of a fool of ourselves, once again BIG thanks to everyone involved in organising this awesome championship.:notworthy::notworthy:
Hopefully we'll be able to improve ourselves for the final round..

These roads sure are amazing, I'm just sad I missed out on some fun by hitting a few posts and banks here and there which meant that I busted a few radiators and the engine struggled to get going at times. Despite stalling and having a third of the rally at snail pace, there were still many smiles and many opposite locks to be had :inlove:

Although it was my first time doing these stages, I had done this stage in time-trial mode to test out cars, so it was not a total unknown (the later night stage caught me out a few times and I had a few trips to those damn b... ditches :rolleyes: )

Somehow already on the first stage I had mud on the roof, without having rolled :O_o: If someone could explain that one to me, I would be very grateful :geek:

Done. Wrong choice of final ratio for the last 2 stages cost me a position. One minute slower combined than my practice times on these two stages!
No flat tire, no major accident, I think I’m getting the hang of it!
I had a belly operation last week and I couldn’t even drive a real car until Friday! And I get about the same position as the last two rallies...so much for practice value!
 
Had to retire. Got one puncture that I can't explain to myself - hit nothing, no dirt, no fence, just popped up when I was with one wheel in the grass. Thanks, Codemasters. Lost focus because of that on the third leg and had a brainfart; went fullspeed into a section where I knew it wasn't possible, got a fully damaged car and another blown tyre. Had to retire on the next leg, as 15 minutes of repair were worth nothing to the car. The engine just didn't make it anymore and was close to cutting out completely, so I pulled the plug. Ugh, seeing faster times by friends and DR2 in general frustrates me more than it gives me joy.

ss06 - Spun in the 4th corner, and almost left the road into a deep ditch 1km later... I just can't get my driving to work this rally.
ss07 - I am driving like a wet sock... I just want to survive at this point, and move on to the next event!

ss08 - Opened up the rear dif a bit more. Felt better, not so much pushing from the rear.
ss09 - The car feels a lot better to drive, thoug I still drive like a wet sock. A few more stages to go now.
ss10 - Might have worn the tyres quite a bit, this one was very understeery again.
ss11 - That was more sideways and all over the shop than Sweden with the Escort! Understeered a lot in right handers, so I might have some bad allignment going on.

ss12 - Decided against better knowing to push a bit, and it felt good....for the first half of the stage. Got away lucky from 2 shunts, and finished the rally on a somewhat decent note.

Happy with the final result, but not with my driving. I need to step it up in Scotland!

I buckled up for what I knew would be a long, long rally after a particularly exhausting (personal) week for me. New Zealand featuring some of the longest stages in DiRT (and slowest, compared to super fast Finland), I decided to tread carefully and try not to break the car. This has been my biggest issue during this championship, I always find a way to f*ck it up badly. :confused:

The first two loops went nicely, I was not going fast - I can't anyway - but my name was slowing going higher and higher in the leaderboard, which was encouraging. The strategy was easy, soft tyres all the away. I knew I would suffer a bit with lack of grip near the end of loop 4, but I believe it was a good call nonetheless.

Took a small break mid-rally to try and keep focused for the rest, which seemed tougher (especially SS8 through SS11). So far, the time in the service areas had been enough to fully fix the car, which meant only one thing: I was not being Samir and breaking my Impreza. SS8 to SS11 was probably the worst bit, I don't particularly like the Ocean Beach stage, way too many slow corners, and bruised the 555 a few times against bushes and wood fences.

Finally, I reached the last service area with pretty much a brand new car, minus a few bodywork scratches I could not fix. I told the guys to take the spare tyre out, got a brand new set of soft tyres and gave it all. As usual, my time was not particularly good, but I got a 10th place at the end, which I hope to keep, since the rally ends in about 43 minutes. :D

Bring on Scotland! :thumbsup:

PS: Yes, I call this a bridge. :D I have managed to fall of ALL of them already at some point or another, so they are dangerous to me. :roflmao:

A little bit sad that only 46 drivers from over 100 entries in J-RDRC started the rally. I don't know what is wrong with some people. Why they signed-up. I understand that sometimes you can miss 1 or 2 rallies, I also missed one due to time issues.
There is a significant down fall from the entries per rally. In the end is there problem and their points I guess...

This is normal for championships, we've seen disappointingly big drop-offs in leagues were only premium members can participate as well.
Previously, before premium membership, it was "licensed member", if you lost the license you wouldn't be able to race on any RD servers. Even then we've experienced seasons with 50-60 sign-ups and 16-20 drivers driving the second to last rally (which somehow often is the rally with fewest competitors). In fact, last season we had about the same amount of drivers in the 6th rally as Rally NZ this season, but we had almost 100 more sign-ups in total.
We know it will happen, and it is a choice we make, to open it up for everyone, which does make it easier for people to sign up and "forget" about it.

I'm sure there are things we could've done better as well, to keep interest higher and/or people to not forget about this.

EDIT: Also, I do screenshot every in-game name and cross-reference that with the dirtgame-site name (as those are different), thus I am able to fix anyone who gave the one that doesn't show up on the website, but the one that shows up in-game. So if anyone had signed up with "batatasfritas" that would've been connected to a name. But it's not.

has been a phenomenon ever since i played in online leagues, so for at least 18 years. part of the internet culture of not actually being there in person, i would say. i am, for instance, still utterly convinced one cannot meet a real "friend" on the internet, 90% of 1:1 communication in real life is body English, none of that is found when you type in a message on your keyboard. long story short: there is no personal liability in you signing up and then never appearing, since you never shook Ole's hand. point number two: players tend to think they are God and then find out in the first round there are at least two dozen Gods out there who are decidedly more God-like than they are. Back to hotlapping they go.
 
After a normal start in SS01 + SS02 it looks that the gravel stages in NZ fits my driving style much more than the tarmac stages in spain. SS03 -SS05 were driven without any major issues until crossing the finish line of SS05. AFTER the finish line I hit the open cube steel construction behind the wooden boxes of the finish line and got massive damage of this accident.

I wasn't able to repair all damaged parts of my car and this fact caused more problems in the further stages. I try to carry my BMW through the next stages SS06 + SS07 and hopefully the short 15 Min service helps to survive the following middle part with SS08 - SS11.

It works good enough including SS10 but I recogniced less power in SS11. Before starting SS12 I noticed the excellent stage time of MRADICAL in our power stage( 3 seconds faster as my time with a new car in SS03) and have in my service a heavy discussion with my mechanics which parts of my car should be repaired or not for only 1 last stage. My decision was to repair (fast) only engine and gearbox and to ignore all other damage parts like body, brake, clutch etc.

Unfortunately it was the powerstage and if I want to strike back for the leadership in my class I have to deliver a stage time, with a damaged car, which is much better than my stage time in SS03 for overtake his ~1.8 sec advantage after SS11.

After starting SS12 and passing the first sector I noticed that I could have a chance to reach this goal but in the following sector times it seems that it is not possible.The decision was very close in the 2 last sector of SS12. After crossing the finish line of SS12 I was able to drive a personal best time and in summary of all 12 stages -1.8 sec! It was a heartbeat final like it is sometimes in sport.
