Welcome to Round 3 of the RDHGP S4

Welcome back to the 2009 RDHGP S4. After a disappointing (in terms of connectivity issues) Watkins Glen event, I very much hope to get back on the metaphorical track with Round 3. It won’t surprise any of you to know that I was really quite mortified by the issues we had at the Glen, and slightly disappointed in some reactions even though I did what I could to give everyone the best possible chance of a race. I know it was frustrating, and you have my apologies, but matter how serious and pompous I make these briefings, it is still just a game. We should never lose sight of that, no matter how seriously we take it.

As it turns out, it might be the provider’s recent server relocation that was, and still is, at fault. This in turn is meaning that concurrent events might be out until further notice (basically, only 1 event per server at any one time). I will keep you all posted the status of the situation. On a slightly more positive note, the qualification laps (in both sessions) were pretty much impeccable with regard to the Inner Loop cutting.

Looking up rather than down, I personally had a better (more fun) race at the Glen than at Melbourne (mirrored by some comments I received), possibly because of the one shot quali format we ran which mixed the grid up a little. I also had some positive feedback about that from several drivers. Accordingly, I will consider that for future seasons.

With that post-mortem out of the way, we turn our attention to RDHGP’s first visit to Europe this season, in the shape of the Czech Republic’s Autodrom Most.

Circuit Notes

Most is situated in the North West Czech Republic, and it’s highest profile current event is FIA Truck Racing, and it has previously hosted round of the European Le Mans Series.

One of the more complex tracks in Season 4, it is also one of the least familiar of this year’s venues to RD in general, but one that I think will be visited often and regularly by the GTL community, as it scales so well across all car and performance types.

The first event hosted in the town of Most was a motorcycle event around the brewery in 1947, the first car event not until 5 years later. Many events, both motorcycle and car, were run upon improvised street layouts and continued until 1983, when the current Autodrom was completed. Built over the Vrbenský open cast mine, the mines contours are readily recognisable in the current circuit layout, and the grass slope favoured by spectators.

RDHGP is using the Chicaned layout, which dramatically alters the first half of the lap, to try and keep the cars together as much as possible.

The first corner chicane is a unique challenge this season, being much slower and tighter than Melbourne, guarded by sawtoothed kerbs and walled by very high - and very hard – tyre barriers.

Once through there (which we all hopefully will be as long as drivers do not get too selfish) the track opens out into a gently curved, flat out section, which ends with some tight, risk/reward esses and a downhill hairpin. The esses, if taken well, are key for a good laptime, but it is very easy to slip over into “too aggressive”, and then they will cost you dearly.

Out of the hairpin there is another relatively long straight, with a curve halfway down that will reward a good neutral setup with a great exit into the second set of esses. These mark the beginning of the climb back up to the S/F straight, the highest point on the circuit. Conservation of momentum is key here, rather than point and squirt power.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:-
· T1R + T2L – the first 2 corners are a very tight, fairly narrow and very well guarded chicane. This type of corner is always viewed as an overtaking opportunity, but to make it worthwhile, you’re going to need to actually get through it. The classic line is approaching on the left of the track and sweeping across the apex, while people attempting to overtake will generally go in narrower to shorten the line. The result of these two differing approaches combined with the profile of the corner means that the people taking the classic line may not be able to see people trying to overtake up the inside. Because of this the Race Director has ruled that it is entirely incumbent upon the driver attempting the overtake to do so safely, as they will be behind going into the braking zone, and be able to see the car in front. People who are hit by reckless overtaking into this zone are asked to file an incident report. This finding is only valid from Lap2 onwards.

For Lap 1, there will not be enough room to enforce this as traffic will be high in this area. Again, I will not be posing a non-overtake rule there, but also again, if you suffer from an overly aggressive, or even overly hopeful, piece of driving from anyone, you are urged report it. If people wildly overestimate the braking performance of their car, and their cold tyres into T1R, or expect people to just get out of their way (even though they have nowhere to go) and cause a pile up, you will face a penalty.

· T4L, T5R, T6R, T7L - The Front Esses. Most has the normal multi coloured kerbs that we see more regularly than the Glen’s White banks. These are deemed part of the track, but as always anything beyond the kerbs is deemed illegal. With the reduced size of these kerbs, the “two wheels inside the white lines” rule of thumb will see you in good stead. The front Esses are approached at high speed, with limited braking reference points. Because of this, it is easy to overshoot and go off track in the first part of the Esses. As cars are already manouevering at high speed through this section, and because you will most likely be rejoining near the entry for the second part of the Esses, you must make sure you re-enter the track safely. Let people past rather than trying to force your way out onto a crowded track.

Incidents, Investigations and Penalties

After round 2 there are currently no outstanding Incidents or Investigations, but there are a few Penalties being levied.

2 no-show penalty infractions are being levied after the suspension of the original no-shows:-

Simon Bacon
Stuart Neal

These will be carried until Round 6 when they will be rescinded. If the drivers have not responded by that time with remdial action, they will gain a second infraction and be removed from the League.

Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.

No report = no review.

Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know. Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.)

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

Liveries

You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHGP event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHGP.

Scoring System

I have extended the points distribution method down to P20 (75% distance completion required) so people can fight for some points no matter where they are on the track, and hopefully have a season long battle with people around them in the League.

The Distribution is as follows (double for the 200km event):

P1 - 25 pts
P2 - 22
P3 - 20
P4 - 18
P5 - 16
P6 - 15
P7 - 14
P8 - 13
P9 - 12
P10 - 11
P11 - 10
P12 - 9
P13 - 8
P14 - 7
P15 - 6
P16 - 5
P17 - 4
P18 - 3
P19 - 2
P20 - 1

1 point for fastest race lap (not double on 200km event)

1 point for qualifying on Pole (not double on 200km event)

It would be great if someone would upload another replay because there is still some "lagging" in server replay and I would gain another cockpit view.
Grats to Peter and podium. I hope to join you guys next time.
Thx Stuart.

I'd like to see another replay too please, my replay has some cars disappearing at various stages.

My Race report so far, as best I can from my dicey replay:

Great to finally be able to join you guys in this League. For various reasons, I wasn't able to prepare much, but I enjoyed the race and had some nice battles at various stages.
Apologies first: Firstly to Sam, it seemed like the tinyest of nudges but it was enough to throw you off line. Sorry mate, it wasn't a get square, promise. :embarrassed:
Secondly to Carlos, again I thought I had left enough space but suddenly you spun, so I must have tapped you. Very sorry guys, I was having a touch of lag at that period, but no excuse. :shame:

Qualified about P13, but it was a PB so not bad. Reasonable start and just wanted to stay out of trouble at turn 1. I settled down to a good rhythm (for me) and moved up to P8 in the early stages. Things got messy around lap 10 ish I think. Suddenly a few cars around me started disappearing and re-appearing about 10 ses later (lag I guess). During this strange period, things went awry. Sam tapped and spun me exiting the last turn (maybe I cut him off, he was invisible at the time). Not long later, I tapped Sam and threw him off line. Then, not long later again, I tapped Carlos and spun him off. After we both waited for all the traffic to clear, I was now back to P16. I then had a nice battle with Amir for a while (actually I probably just held him up) and then things settled down again. I steadily made up some spots with good races with Ivo (that Vette sure has some straight line squirt), Tom and Stuart, and then a great battle with Kris and Ulli over the closing stages., Finally finished P10.

Thanks everyone, this is still the best League Group I have joined.

I'm at work right now, so I am not able to provide the full report. Will do so as soon as I can, with lots of pics :good:

No worries Warren, it's not like you kept me from reaching the podium or anything,. but thanks for waiting :good: These kinds of things are almost unavoidable in online racing, with these many cars in one race, lag is going to be a part of the experience.

A small report from my side:
Didn't had any practice (read: never seen the track) after the frustration from Watkins (where I had tons of practice over there and had the worst race ever: no further words needed)
For some reason I got the hang of the track after a lap of 3, normally it takes me an hour or 3 :), but perhaps it's also the 911 who becomes more familiar every event.

Qualify:
As I was still perfecting my lines on Most, I wasn't surprised to see I broke my PB (which I set 15 minutes before) with another second: P16 with a 1.47.8

Race:
I got a really bad start and inmediately lost 1/2 places on the straight. Luckily I got a very good line throughout the first chicane and was able to avoid that spinning green Beemer right after the chicane. Then I hoped things would settle down, but having Ivo's V8 in your tail isn't very relaxing. Then with cold tyres I was trying to push my 911'er through the corners as hard as possible to escape from being eaten by that American. Wonderfully I managed to do so and soon I found myself in my habitual league position: 2 inch from Mr. Thomson :) This stayed for a few exciting laps and in lap 4 & 6 each made a spin so we stayed +/- together, constantly being threathe,ed by Carlos & 'friends'. Then Adgie arrived and he got past pretty quick. As I thought I was now the last of the Porsches I pushed the BelgaBabe with full focus, but I couldn't keep up with Adgie, while in my back Ulli & Stuart were constantly at 3-4 seconds. When Ulli got under 2 sec difference I knew I had to do something, especially since I saw Amir passing by and closing in fast: push even harder! :D In this lap I completely waisted my tyres, but I was able to set down my Qualify time, and increased the distance to Ulli, but not to the almighty Amir. When Amir came very close we had a little tap (I couldn't keep the car on the inside line enough) and there went my 911. A pitty we (he waited very politely) lost positions to Ulli & Warren. When trying to rejoin the track I nearly hit Ulli (very sorry: completely didn't see you) I tried to give the 'Go' to Amir signal faster, but was shocked by almost hitting Ulli.
After this -only- incident I really wanted to finish in the top 10 so I just had to get past Warren again. Full focus I started approaching the 906: have a look at our gap in laps 18 up to lap 23: from 1.9 sec diff to 0.3 in the last 2 laps. I was pretty scared of touching Warren as he still had a touch of lag, also I just couldn't get passed him as he entered the corners quite different then I was used to (probably there was also little rubber left on his tyres). Anyway: I was so focussed I was completely surprised when suddenly someone started to congratulate Peter that I lost all chance of catching Warren (and perhaps Ulli) in the final lap.

Final remark: this event completely reactivated my joy & fun & devotion for simracing.
Thx Stuart, RD and all of you guys out there!

See you in Zolder!

Standard format for my qualy, i drive the doors of it and only end up 16th, dunno where I go wrong. I might soon have to admit that the Alpina was a mistake:loser:

I knew from the beginning that I was picking one of the slower cars, but I just wanted a car that I could drive for a long time without crashing it all the time. I know that if I would have gotten one of the Porsches (particularly the 911) I would have ruined the league for several guys by now . I had no seat time at all in the Porsches, I would have been learning to drive it during the league, not something I wanted to do.

But looking at the bright side of things, I get to have some nice battles with the rest of the guys that didn't pick the Porsches.

And as an added bonus, I am becoming somewhat of an expert in getting lapped!! Before I would get all nervous and afraid of ruining the lappers race, now I have gotten pretty good at getting out of the way so quickly they barely ever have to slow down because of little ole me .

Don't worry too much about it Tom, there's always next season :good:

Had a decent race, with one or two silly incidents that I could have avoided:embarrassed:, sorry to Leszek and Warren for those, btw, NP Warren on the "retaliatory hit" first race I've managed to actually compete in this season and it was a cracker with some close racing:nailbiting:, too close on my part sometimes, and excellent driving, thanks guys.

Sam

Indeed, i do love the #29 beamer - it's the best looking car/livery on the grin (in my opinion)

I get slightly frustrated with it's performance somethimes but i was prepared for that from the start too. I don't regret choosing it one bit. Wierdly it actually feels like i'm getting into my own car when i load a league race up, really starting to get familier with all of it's little traits. I actually think i'll be a bit sad when i cross the finish line at Le Mans next year.

I didn't join the league to win it, i knew i wouldn't stand a chance, so that fact that my choice of car allows me to battle with a huge bunch of awesome drivers makes me very happy indeed.

However, i've already Pm'd stuart regarding Season 5 Liveries and I've stuck my name down for an Alfa - so next time i'm in it to win it!!

Excellent race. Despite that I finished 7th (could easily finished fourth).

I lost some places after first chicane, but my car looked much faster then does Porsches ahead (except top three) and right behind me. I was passing them pretty quick. To stop me they bumped me... twice (I know it wasn't on purpose and I'm sure they will be more careful next race) I lost some places, but I was still sure that I can catch them before end of the race. It didn't happen because I damaged the car and most importantly lost front spoiler. This made my car very understeer. I was over a second slower per lap and started to defend positions. It took me some time to learn new car behaviour. Sam took advantage from that and passed me with ease. Next behind was Jay but I held him to the finish. Great racing guys!:bang:

See you at Zolder
:nopics::tongue:

I think Piotr is right! From one side there is supposed to keep the track (2 wheels between lines), from other on the movie there is a lot of cuts.

Moving by Ryan outside the track is unfair IMHO and position should have been given back. All my preparation to the track cost me a lot of time to avoid cuts, but honestly what for? Only for my peace I think.
