RaceDepartment Historic Club Series Season 10 Round 2 – If you tolerate this, then your Round 3 will be next

Welcome back to Round 2 of RDHCS S10. There has been long and well documented commentary after Round 1, something that always happens once we see how the vehicle set and driver mix shapes up. I won’t waste your time and go over that again - we all know exactly what’s been said, and with what intention – so let’s look forward to the next challenge that the season throws at us.

We stay in Europe for Round2, moving 1,130 miles due North from Portimao to Aberffraw, North Wales, and the 3.38km International layout of the Anglesey Circuit.

Circuit Notes

Anglesey Circuit (or Trac Mon in Welsh) is set on the west coast of Anglesey, overlooking the Irish Sea and Snowdonia mountain range beyond, and provides us with a challenging and exciting circuit set in a beautiful location. The circuit was completely redesigned in 2006 from the previous version, and the only philosophy in play was to utilise the topography and setting to maximise the enjoyment and challenge of the track. The TV programme 5th Gear regularly uses the 1.5 mile Coastal layout for its “Shoot Out” section of the show. The 2.1 mile International that we are using is the longest available in the complex, and provides multiple challenges within its compact footprint.

Like Portimao, the track is constantly changing gradient throughout the span of a lap, but unlike Portimao, we do not have the wide open spaces of Portugal to navigate.

The S/F straight at Anglesey is much tighter than Portimao, and from the exit of the last turn is a pretty short run into T1L - Turn 1. As the turn starts, the track is traversing a hill, but by the time you exit the turn, you're going up hill. Nothing is too steep, but it does remove any helpful camber that might be there. In addition, the inside is protected by the tyre barrier guarding the pitlane, so turning in early and extra tight to negate that adverse camber is a non-starter, and this barrier also obscures the exit, making picking your line fairly tricky.

A short blast uphill and then hard on the brakes for T2R - The Banking. As the name suggests, there is some pretty hefty (for this circuit at least) positive camber through this hairpin turn, and it allows for some fairly early application of throttle, the banking helping to keep your car in line. You exit The Banking downhill onto the straight, and approach T3R - Church.

This is a medium-high speed bend, try to breathe on the brakes rather than stamp on them, keep your momentum up on a feathered throttle and ease your way through here, getting back onto full chat as early as possible, because there is a long stretch of full acceleration following the exit. The next section is flat out, starting gently downhill, and then climbing up and left through 2 gentle tightenings, the second one slightly crested to make it blind and to throw you left, just when you need to be stable and on the right hand side of the track for the heavy, hard braking zone for T4aL - Rocket1.

This is the tightest corner on the circuit, which has its own obvious difficulty tarrif, but the entry to Rocket1 is gently uphill and then falls away steeply at the apex and through the exit to make it even trickier. Just to make it even harder, you only have a second or two after exit before you are braking hard again, this time downhill and into T4bR - Rocket2. This is a hairpin that traverses a hill, again taking camber off the track just when you would like some, and so you keep it neat and tidy, blast up out and back uphill.

Get on the anchors hard for T5R - Peel. This is blind and crested, making it very tricky to attack, so keeping stable through here will be quickly than any gung-ho approach, as there are bumpy kerbs and slippery, dusty grass on the outside for those who don't respect Peel's dusguised trickiness.

Once out of Peel, accelerate downhill towards T6L - Seamans, and again beware of the downhill entry removing camber. The corner looks very inviting to attack, but goes on longer than expected, so average speed ends up being lower than anticipated. Accelerate hard out of Seamans, onto the Tom Pryce Straight, braking hard and early for T7R - The Hairpin. This is similar looking to - but tighter and less banked than - T2R, so do't get fooled into thinking you can attack it the same way. Get everything slowed down neatly, turn in early and gently roll back onto the throttle, down the gentle slope.

Brake hard, past the pitlane entry, and into T8L - Bus Stop. Like Turn1, the pits are very close to the apex, so it's obscured on the inside line, doesn't allow for any leeway on the tighter line, and is (of course) off-camber. Neatness is again order of the day. Once safely through, get hard on the gas for that short S/F straight, acorss the line for another lap of Anglesey.

The Race Director has some notes for drivers. Please see the track map above for location of Race Direction note:
All Corners Without Exception – The kerbs are not deemed as track, therefore 2 wheels must be within the white lines, on the tarmac, At All Times. Again, there are NO exceptions to this rule at any point on the circuit. Any exception to this rule is deemed illegal, any advantage gained by this method must be ceded immediately. Report people deliberately and excessively cutting - this can be people in front of you trying to gain an advantage, or people behind you trying to cheat to catch up.

T1L - Turn 1 - Especially on Lap 1. Be aware of people as you turn in here, it has the possibility to cause huge problems if drivers don’t respect each other. Be aware that any incidents caused by reckless or over aggressive driving in Turn 1 during the first lap will be dealt with severely. The tyres of the pitwall mean that there is a potential for cars to strand themselves across the line if they go too tight.

T4aL / T4bR - Rocket. There is every chance of multiple lines being taken through here by the different car types, if you are genuinely side by side, ie there's some overlap just hold your side of the track. If you take Rocket1 tight, take Rocket2 wide, and vice versa. Don't swoop across to try and be tight on both corners because 2-into-1 won't go. There will be no chance for anyone to get out of the way, or for both to through cleanly. Racing room must be given, and this is the area where it'll be most important.

T5R - Peel. This is a very easy corner to lose control over the bumped apex under acceleration (or indeed brakes), so be aware as you approach for stranded vehicles suddenly becoming visible.

Also - we have a wide performance disparity in various areas of the track. The lighter, grippier cars cannot just throw themselves recklessly at a marginal gap and expect people to get out of their way. Likewise the heavier, more powerful cars can't just drive their lines oblivious to others around them and not expect to be challenged. As long as things are clean and legal, you will be fine.

Racing Room must be given to all driversand this works both ways. Divebombing into and across a corner denies people the chance to make the corner correctly just as much as someone obliviously (or deliberately) cutting the nose off of another driver who has achieved partial overlap fairly.

All points on the track – General Items
Drivers may put on their lights (and keep them on) during a timed qualification lap, so other drivers know to get out of the way when safe to do so.
No lights are to be used or flashed at any stage, under any circumstances, during the Race Session.
No Chat during the Quali or Race except by Race Control for information.
The Track must be re-entered safely so as not to ruin other peoples races.
Car damage must be assessed realistically to know if it is possible to make the pits or not.

Incidents, Investigations and Penalties

There were no Incident Reports, and everyone fulfilled their Attendance Satus correctly.
Please remember, the League staff will only review incidents if they are reported to them.

No report = no review.

Please try and remember the incident reporting guidelines: review, cool off, review again. Only after following the above process, and if you are convinced you still need to report it, should you let the League staff know. Please give as much information as possible during the report (time of incident, drivers involved etc.) Accident reports made within 24 hours of race completion will be ignored.

Any accusations or complaints aired in the Chat during or after a race will mean a penalty levied on the person complaining or making the accusations, even if a subsequent official complaint gets found in their favour. I simply will NOT tolerate any post race finger pointing.

Liveries
You have chosen your car and livery already, and you must only drive your chosen car at any time during an RDHCS event. Every driver has a unique livery in this season of RDHCS.

Reporting Attendance
I will be sending a PM with the round password to all Signed-Up drivers. I will also be running an “Attendance” post. If you are definitely driving, you need to “like” the post. If you are NOT driving (or if you are unsure of attendance) you must post a reply to say so. If there is no response, or if a response is posted after 2 hours before Event start time (ie 1800 London time) on race day, it will be treated as a "will attend" status, and any absence will be deemed a No-Show. 2 No-Shows will mean removal from the league.

Scoring System
Points are scored down to P25 (75% distance completion required) so people can fight for some points no matter where they are on the track, and hopefully have a season long battle with people around them in the League.
The Distribution is as follows for 100km events :

1 point for fastest race lap
1 point for qualifying on Pole

Nice race . It was worth trying to keep up every lap. It kept interesting for me all the race. No lonely moments.
Only a few scary:unsure: moments when I got lapped / giving the leaders :alien: of the race a change to continue their battle. That were moments I was also losing contact with the people I followed close.
I am happy with the result and had a lot of fun.
Thanks everybody for the race ande organizing the event.

Right off the bat: sorry to Stu and Krzysztof for tapping you both out of shape. Bad judgment and too much wishful thinking.

The race: that was thoroughly enjoyable. At first I struggled with the car, being underpracticed and whatnot, but after a few racing laps I forced myself to focus better and work on smoothing my inputs (not exactly my strong suit). It worked, I improved the times vastly and was able to (sorta) keep up with the cars in front.

At one point went from being the slowest Pole to being the fastest one and back to the slowest. Over a course of one lap :). Then there was Ole "Sideways Pink" Myrvold; when I caught up my car started to get twitchy itself just from looking at the pink heap of steel powersliding in front :D.

Finished 15th, but it was a very fun and rewarding experience. I feel totally un-frustated now, an exact opposite of the race a fortnight ago. I approached it with a very gentelman mindset (a nice way of saying slow as molasses and fine with it) and it worked out very well.

Thanks for the fun experience guys, see you on the track next round! :)

Anglesey is a great track for the Alpine, so i was having a blast chucking into the tight hairpins until around lap 7, when i had a scary micro-lag moment at the fastest part of the track. I was completely out of control and on the grass heading into the uphill section and into the tight hairpin left/right, and smacked the marshal's post head-on at high-speed. Unbelievably, the car was still running so i floored it and emerged about 1s ahead of Dmytro- but with the car not quite running straight. I took a couple of laps to get my head around the now wonky steering, and was more cautious for the remainder of the race. (I didn't get any more lag issues though, apart from seeing a couple of laggy cars ahead)

Looked like a fun race for everyone, one of the highlights was seeing Senad's 'Brown Magnificence©' leaving some skidmarks after drifitng nicely through the final hairpin, (yes, i'm aware of my choice of words in that sentence!) as well as some close battling. Also, cheers to everyone who moved over to let me through- top drawer driving there.

Congrats to Roland & Bob H for their podiums, i believe that's Roland's first in RDHCS? (first of many, i'm sure!) And thanks to Thommo, Rupe & Knut for their administration par excéllence.

Q: did a good time, a personal best, it was able to put me in 20th ( i think)

R: Had a slow start, i was afraid to spin due to starting on the last corner, in turn 1 a car spun in front of me, fortunately i was able to avoid it and i proceeded, at the exit of turn 3 i was side-by-side with another escort, i gave him room but i was able to pass him, then i was behind Ole and his pink Shelby for some time and, just by seing him going sideways i was thinking how hard he must have been working the wheel , although i couldn't pass him, because in the straights he just left me stopped, i eventually fell behind and was being closely followed by Tim Ling, we kept together for some time he fell a bit behind but them he caugth up and passed, we were able to caugth up with Ole and in the hairpin the three of us were close and Tim and I were a bit faster on the apex and Tim had to slow down, unfortunately i wasn't able to slow down and tapped his rear end making him spin ( sorry mate :( ) some time after Tim caught up with me again and we passed by Ole which had rollover the car in Rocket 1 after hitting the inner kerb :roflmao:, Tim eventually passed me, and then my race fell apart, i spun in the lat corner and lost some positions, from then to the end i kept spining ( i think i spoun 3 or 4 times :() i was passed by some faster cars ( i hope i didn't made it too hard for them) and then the race ended, i finished 23rd. It was a disapointing finish since i was able to be in a very good position during the race, but i'm the only one to blame, so i will need to be more consistent next time.

Thank you all for the race, congratulations top3 and those who finished, and see you next round

If I'm honest I made a bit of a balls up of that:) Made a reasonable start and picked my way through quite a few accidents to get up to a reasonable mid pack position. Then I got a bit of the old red mist and things fell apart at the half way. Couple of unforced errors and I was stone cold last.

Took a deep breath and cracked on and managed to finish in the last point scoring position. Lots of nice driving all around. Actually quite happy to get the point considering:)

Thanks all.

Another great league race! A tough track, slippery in places, but fun :).

Got spun at the start by Peter, but slowly made my way back to 18th. Had some great racing with Rui, then after getting past him, suddenly found Dave F in front of me. Got past him on the last lap, then slightly out-breaked my self in the last hairpin and he past me for 16th. Senad then almost nicked 17th, just 0.05 secs behind...that's half an Alpine:p

Barely time to breathe recently, I was setting up my driver profile an hour before quali

Great track, enjoyed it quite a bit.

I guess I forgot to set up my clutch pedal, because I started moving forward on the start line. Luckily, no stop and go.
Then the actual start, and suddenly a yellow Alpine, Ross I think, appeared stationary in front of me, so I swerved and braked, sorry for any trouble behind.

After that, some nice close driving, enjoyable.
Found myself in an opportunistic move against Jack, unplanned. He gave me some room, and all was well. Should've waited perhaps.
A couple of more overtaking attempts ended up with me bumping some folk around. Roy and Rene if I recall correctly. Gave it back.

Overtook Hans, but got bumped off whilst braking for turn 1.

Ended up behind Warren, bumped into him as well :D. Only later did I realize he was trying to let me through. Not sure why that was, we're all there to race, and I enjoy following people around anyway :D

Not sure what else happened. Very close at the end though, three of us a second or so apart. Tim making a mistake at the end of the lap, I hoped to pounce, but turned out it was the last lap, aw.

Overall, fun, nice track, even though I was on the slow side.

Congrats podium, thanks to the organizers and everyone racing

Yeah, sorry about that Senad, it went a bit wrong but was funny at the same time. I was just concentrating on staying out of any trouble and looking after the tyres. You looked quicker so I wanted to let you by as soon as possible, so I pulled over on the straight but caught you unawares, and you tapped me (only very lightly without affecting me). I then pulled off the road to let you get by but you kept waiting for me (which you didn't need to), so we both crawled all the way down the straight waiting for each other. I then made sure you could pass next lap by going onto the grass, you passed, mission accomplished I thought. Unfortunately, about three turns later you had a huge off and I was back in front of you again. :p We just couldn't get co-ordinated. :whistling:

It was a very eventful and enjoyable race for me, also a bit scary at points :p. In the race session my ffb was suddenly completely screwed up. Most of the time it was very light as in no ffb at all, but sometimes it got heavy for some reason :(

I qualified 3rd and stayed there after the start, and had some intimate moments with Dmytro in front, but I soon had 2 near spins due to my ffb switching from heavy to light. Roland managed to get past, putting me in 4th. I decided to take it easy and I slowly started to get used to the stupid ffb. I spent a large part of the race driving behind Roland and Dmytro and the gaps between us seemed to be very steady, very similar pace:). Dmytro was then caught out by a backmarker and Roland and I managed to get past. A few laps later I got held up by a backmarker (whoever that was, you had nowhere to go so np) and Dmytro got back past. I then had some close battles with Dmytro and tapped him around (really sorry for that). I waited and Bob, Neil and Jay snuck in front of me. I had a very hard time overtaking Neil's ferrari. After many attempts I was finally able to make my way past. Sorry if I got a little too agressive there Neil.
After that I was driving behind Jay, who in the end gave me a little present by running out of fuel (shame :(). Finished 5th in the end. Could have been worse. I heard my car was lagging, sorry to anybody caught in that.

Grats Ross, Roland and Bob and thanks everybody for racing! see you all next time.

LOL, yeah, I'm slow that way :D

Thanks all! It was great! and you're right Ross, my first League podium!!! WOOHOO!! Where's that dancing banana when you need it!?!:D

I did do a LOT of practice indeed, and it paid off! Could do pretty good laptimes in practice, but secretly hoped to be even a little faster in Qualy on low fuel.:sneaky:
That didn't work out:( , but still started in 4th. :)

After a pretty good start, I was chasing Ross, Dmytro and Guus with a small gap to Bob H. behind. When Guus had a slight wobble coming out of a corner I could get by, and had him right on my tail for quite a number of laps, where our laptimes were virtually equal with a constant little gap.

When we were about halfway round, we started lapping people and Dmytro's bad luck was my good fortune; I managed to get ahead of him, while he had to fight his way back from behind Guus I think.
From what I could see they had a pretty good fight going on, allowing me to build a nice little gap. Near the end (had to look at XD twice as it felt like we were just about halfway) my car started to slide a lot more and after I barely made it through a corner twice in one lap, decided to take it a little bit slower
With Ross way ahead of me this allowed Bob H. to come a little closer, but I still had a comfortable gap at the finish!

I couldn't believe I actually came 2nd in a league race, especially with such a huge grid!! Think of it, I even was first of the humans  ! Pretty much feels like a win to me!

Thanks all for a fun race night, and a special thanks to all drivers I lapped, as everyone was super careful when I came up behind them:thumbsup: (this lapping thing is rather new to me too :O_o: )

Grats Ross for another win, and to Bob H. for completing the all-Alpine podium!
Thanks to the GTL staff for another great event on a superb track, hope to CYA next time, as that one will be pretty different again.

FOR SALE
Jaguar..Slightly used. Needs new tires. No offer will be refused. This car must go by tomorrow night because I am leaving the planet to hide on the moon.

Did not receive a point for this race, but what hurts is I was doing ok at times, worked my way up the list ( slightly mind you), having good battles with several drivers, only to screw up and fall to last place...more than once. Horrible results equals horrible feelings..good thing my wife is at her Mon's tonight.:D
Sorry Stu for the spin on track which bugged up your car.

All in all it is just a game, to compete is the goal, not ot win. Enjoy the ......hold on please, my own words making me sick .

Seriously, wd Ross, Roland the Man, and Bob. Cheers to all drivers.

Surely the next race can't be as bad......

Yessssss! Actually managed to arrive on the grid for this one so got to watch Anglesey from in the race and not as a spectator like last time - so before the lights went green I'd already improved my form!

I'm happy with the race overall. A nervy start with cars all around followed by hanging onto the back of a group until I pressed a little too had on the giggle pedal and spun out from behind Stewart and off up the bank at the next to last turn. I then had q lonely patch that seemed to go on forever with no one in sight in front and only the occasional flash of a Luminous Pink Shelby behind. Then the last few laps and things got far busier as first Ross caught up and passed, followed a lap or two later by Tim and Senad closing in at the same time as Roland caught up to lap us, hope I didn't get in your way too much Roland,I wanted to let you past but Tim and Senad were right there with you so it got a bit tense for me for a time! Managed to let Roland past and hold position. Tim passed me, I passed Tim, Tim passed me in the last two laps, then as Tim said he graciously went straight on and gave it back to me..two corners from the end ! - Thanks TIM !

And thanks to everyone for turning up, and being clean and great fun to drive around (ok its expected, but its still always a pleasure and much appreciated). Finally thanks to RD and Admin for making it happen.

See you all for Round 3 practice.
