RD iRacing Star Mazda Series Finale - Race pictorial review

After seven rounds it was still very much all to play for at the top of the championship table. Daytona's 3.5 mile road course promised some spectacular close racing and it didn't fail to deliver! Over the two hour practice session the times dropped lower and lower and it became clear that the drivers were very closely matched on their lap times. Qualifying only served to underline that fact with the top five drivers split by just a few tenths of a second. David Kus just needed a solid finish to take the crown but Lars Strijdonck and Pedron Van Baelen was not going to make it easy for him.

David Kus looked certain to continue his recent form after a win at Spa Francorchamps by posting the fastest time during the two hour practice session. Undeterred Lars Strijdonck pulled out the stops and put his car on pole position for the race closely followed by his fellow championship rival Pedro Van Baelen who just beat Joe Hubbard to second place on the grid. With David Kus qualifying fifth it was all to play for now in the race.

As the lights went green everyone got away cleanly, Pedro Van Baelen lost a spot but quickly took it back. Lars Strijdonck took the lead and never gave it away; he posted the fastest lap and went on to take the win by 7 seconds from William Nowell. Pedro Van Baelen had a spin trying to pass William Nowell and dropped back to seventh place. David Kus managed to take third place and took the Championship win.

There was some fantastic racing from the front to the back of the grid during this event and throughout the series. The Star Mazda has proved to be a popular open wheel choice for drivers who enjoy close racing and this is surely not the last time we'll see this car in an iRacing event at RaceDepartment. So while our congratulations goes out to Lars Strijdonck, William Nowell and David Kus our podium placed drivers at Daytona and of course to David for winning the championship the iRacing staff would like to thank all our drivers for their participation in this series and the competitive but fair attitude displayed by them.
