We are looking to crown the 'RaceDepartment Community Favourite' racing game - get your votes in now for our next game on the list... Assetto Corsa Competizione!

Our dear RaceDepartment community. You folks are the most mighty fans of sim racing, often displaying an immense amount of understanding and depth of knowledge when it comes to our favourite hobby.

With sim racing and eSports in such a wonderful boom period of late. Gamers looking to have some fun with their virtual racing machines have never before had such a wide and robust variety of software to enjoy.

Now occasionally I've been in a position to rate new racing titles that have come my way, and almost every time I've received a wide variety of folks agreeing, or strongly disagreeing with my own opinions.

Opinions are great, but sometimes the opinion of one person, with their own likes and dislikes taken into account, can often give a bit of a skewed picture (intentional or not) to the greater cause in which said person is trying to explain.

As such, rather than doing one myself, and in the spirit of engaging some interesting community discussion, I thought it could be fun to let our own community rate each of the key sim racing / racing games available today.

As always with these things, please do try and respect each other and their opinions, and let's try to see if we can give a fun, but fair shake of the stick to each of the games included in this poll.

For transparency, I'm going to be featuring the following racing games over the next weeks:

  • Assetto Corsa
  • Assetto Corsa Competizione
  • Automobilista (AMS)
  • DiRT 2.0
  • F1 2019
  • GT Sport
  • GRID
  • iRacing
  • NASCAR Heat 4
  • PCARS 2
  • RaceRoom Racing Experience
  • rFactor 2
  • WRC 8

I'm going to launch the article each Monday evening, and keep the poll running for a full week until the next new article is pushed live. So get your votes in quick!

Once I've completed the full list of games, I'll publish a final results feature, and we can award the winning developer the lofty title of 'RaceDepartment Community Favourite'!

Have fun, stay sensible and let the voting commence!

I gave it a 6 with the main reason being the poorly done AI in my opinion. No matter what AI setting I try it is a freight train for me and not fun whatsoever. Big points for graphics and weather though.

My problem with ACC is that it feels like an answer to a question nobody has ever asked in that way. If it had either proper multiplayer functionalities, the European GT4 as an additional class, or a great career mode I would certainly feel different. But as it is now we got a game without an identity that doesn't motivate to playing it. The announcement of the additional IGTC tracks and the new McLaren GT2 (+2019 cars) was great but other areas would need more refinement in my opinion. Especially that broken dream (promise?) of rating-based online racing bugs me. I mean, Kunos hired a guy just for that thing, he archieved an ultra complex ranking system and it is now completely pointless. And I remember Empty Box telling this game could challenge iRacing...

Yeah, I'm getting off my soapbox already.

What it does, it does mostly excellent. Its just that its scope is dedicated, but tight. That makes the content focus somewhat "narrow", only GT3, only ten tracks, two of wich I never use, four more I use only sometimes, no Nordschleife. And that is what nibbles away at motivation in the long term. Just 8 points, therefore. I simply play both AC1 and RR more and longer and more often, than ACC. ACC is too specialised to give it full points from me, I prefer more choice and wider scope. But, 8 still is very good.

I'm in the middle of re-building my gaming box, with upgraded MB, CPU and RAM, in the hopes that I can then use VR in ACC. I can't go back to pancake mode after using VR, so I hope the over €800 that I'm investing in the re-build is going to achieve the desired results.
Otherwise, it's back to rF2 and PC2, which both run fine in VR, but then they're not using UE4 as their engine. Next week I'll know more :)

I have a 9900K @ 5.2 Ghz all cores and a RTX2080 @2200Mhz and it runs like that all day long but still not enough juice for ACC in VR at a reasonable level

More cars (and series [ie open wheel]), more tracks, better VR would have got a 10 from me instead of an 8. I have a powerful rig, with SimXperience Stage IV and the FFB minutes details and motion are incredible.

I gave it a 6.

-1 for no mod support. You could argue that Race Room too has no mod support, but it's f2p and has every car class possible for purchase;
-1 for UE4, which takes a lot of power to render things I don't even look at, as a result looking worse on my system than other titles maxed out. Just look at what Shader Patch guys did with AC for free, even though Kunos said it's not possible;
-1 for game still not being finished (small things like selecting custom AI opponents, which is "not a priority right now"). I waited for lap time saving for months after release.
-1 for too narrow content. the current 10 tracks are on every other sim, and it's 100% clear that my personal favorites (Nordschleife, VIR, Imola, Oulton Park, Road Atlanta) will never be added because of series restrictions. And cars are obviously just GT3, so for anything that is more exciting, like Hypercars, street cars, historic cars, Formula etc. I have to go to other sims. So in reality there is nothing so overwhelmingly special to turn on ACC.

FFB is as good as rF2, AI is good, and physics are challenging enough. What ACC does, it does good, but sadly it's just GT3 with only 10+5 future tracks.

+ I wanted a blancpain gt3 license game
+ sounds are top notch
+ graphics are great
+ driving feels great

- no offline driver swap with A.I.
- no safety car
- no pit crew
- lacking mod support ( understand a being a licensed game but still I'm just nothing wont knock the game too much because of it)
- lazy career mode implementation
As you can see I'm mainly disappointed in lack of features which diminish the immersion for me. I rate ACC a 7. I rated AC a 7 but looking back should have given it a 6

8 for me, I like that it’s properly focused rather then a random collection of cars and tracks, we already have other sims for that.

It needs polish, but a lot of what it does already it does VERY well. VR requires huge power but works well for me (Ryzen 3800x 1080Ti)

Seems most of not all that’s missing will come in time, pit crews hopefully within the next month, the IGTC packs i suspect early ish next year will be epic as well.

a soild 5/10 from me
-Good GT3 SIM.
-Stunning looking game.
-Not finshed/fully released content.
-Career mode is one of the worse i've come across
-No driver customizion/or Car customizion
-No pit crew's
-No Special event's 24hour races/12 hour races (like iracing)
-Driver swaps are there but you need to learn Nasa protcals to work it out
-No Triple screen
-Broken rolling starts either wins you race or losses you the race.
-UE4 engine (good looking but wrong move)

Haven't played it enough to rate, honestly. Big AC fan, play it all the time still, but ACC had always felt a bit WIP to me. Also, much prefer the FFB in AC. With AC, Kunos really had the guts to give you rear end cues through the FFB. FFB in ACC feels a lot more like traditional FFB to me - just steering rack forces. Keep in mind this is all from precious little playtime, just my impressions.

Too many really good sims right now for me to justify much time on ACC. I will likely eventually get around to giving it a deep dive, many people seem to like it. Kunos still has my support. I think they have a real passion for bringing great sim experiences to the people, ACC just hasn't tripped my trigger.

Well said there mate

6/10 for me. I've had it since early access. Love the graphics and sound, but I continually get frustrated with lack of documentation. I've been burned trying to do pit stops. No documentation to help me decipher what went wrong. No way to tell if my ignition is on or off. I have gotten into screens I could never get out of. It looks beautiful. I love the different personalities of the cars. I hate the SAVE being the default for the load/save setups. What it gets right, it gets very right, but there are too many frustrations, and my time with the sim is dwindling. With no documentation clarifying how things are supposed to work, I'll stick with other sims that have more right than wrong.

Just for the engine mappings for each car, you have to go to the KS Forums, to find information about the specific modes, instead of implementing it directly into the game.

Such a "design" choice baffles me. Who is thinking, that this is a good idea? (This is a problem with many Sims out there, but most of them have an old foundation, which is known by many players or wasn't supposed to deliver this kind of rich information without manuals)

-------

I gave it a 6, great Sim in many aspects, especially the weather system and working out setups for aero and tyre management, cars handle significally different and you get a real "feel" for strengths and weaknesses...

...but it's a bad game from a users standpoint, it's unfinished,

-features are weird or aren't there (Safety car is an essential element of Blancpain racing for example, but not avaiable for example),

-UI is clunky,

-look is mushy on resolutions, lower than 2K without upscaling,

-convoluted rating system, that encourages more to hide from racing, than fighting on track,

-still no animated Pitcrew repatched in the game, remember the first reveal trailer with the animated driver change? That was wow...yeah...expectations, expectations...

-poor documentation,

-no time acceleration in sessions, ending practice and qualy feels like waste of time while waiting for the other cars to cross the finish line to get a valid session result...

-focus on eSports before a polished product releases finally and so on...not even starting about missing so much potential in single player aspects, while multiplayer isn't fleshed out as well.

It is fun to drive though, but also still suffers from the Kunos Hotlap Sim character, even if the AI is WAY, WAY, WAY, WAY better than in AC...AI doesn't annoy me, when qualifying on a hotlap, because it actually understands blue flags better, than other sims, that's a big plus and immersive!

I quite like the licence game approach and it feels good to hop in a race, but overall it disappoints at some points, where it could succeed.

EDIT: Aris' blogs about the cars are EXCELLENT, i want to have them in the showroom as car description so desperately!

I gave it an 8 but my true score, (if half points could be awarded) would be 7.5.
It is a good title with lots to be done in terms of optimization of the feature set.
Take VR as an example... I still have difficulty trying to view menus way below my field of view, simply trying to launch.
That should have been sorted way before version1 release.
Things I really like....
Ease of multiplayer access due mostly to no mismatched content.
We have a single class, non-moddable series...as was stated in the very beginning.
That is not now...and never was a surprise.
It significantly raises my expectations in terms of vehicle dynamics, due to having fewer cars to focus on.
I have every confidence at this point, that it'll get sorted eventually.
There is a history of those fixes with Netkar and AC, as well as a level of pride in workmanship.
I can wait and enjoy what I have...for now.
