More than anything, I think the opening of the opening of the 1st lap is almost always the place where all things unravel for many drivers. There are several reasons for this. The primary one, I believe, is human nature and heat of the moment. The other main cause just amplifies the primary one. That's the nature of Internet racing (latency) which is amplified even more by the fact that all of the cars are in close proximity and most "immediately" be mapped and tracked. Then you throw in cold tires and cold brakes. The brew isn't finished yet, throw in drivers that get a great launch and mix that with a driver or 2 that launches slowly or stalls their start. At least one more ingredient ... 1st turn (which is almost always a slow or very tricky corner).

The only ingredient we have control over is the primary one, human nature. The race is NEVER won in the first turn, but almost certainly can be lost there.

It's been interesting observing the various starts I have had here in RaceDepartment. There are times (very rare) that the first race of the event actually gets started cleanly. This is almost always followed by race 2 where all hell breaks loose (2 reasons -- reversed grid for the top 8 and some folks are now over aggressive due to the tameness of the 1st start). Sometimes the opposite happens, where almost everyone learns from the chaos of the 1st race start and try to tame it down for the 2nd. It's very rare that we have 2 clean starts during an evening of 2 events (even in League races).

We just need to learn to control the 1 ingredient we have control over during the opening of each race and we will actually have better races for the remaining laps. Will it happen often, I'm not betting on it. But it is possible, I've seen it a lot of times in league races during my Grand Prix Legends career.
