Photoshop Elements 8 - brush problem

Hey guys,

I'm doing some creative work in Photoshop and have encountered a problem with the brush tool. Up till some time ago it was functioning well, with nice, smooth edges around brush lines. However, somewhat randomly, it has started creating brush lines that are very rough and pixellated around the edges.
I've linked to a screencap to show what I mean by this. On the left is some handwritten text with the brush tool done earlier, with nice smooth edges. On the right is some lines with the strange edging (the word "TEST").

I'd like to point out that I haven't changed any settings whatsoever. This just randomly started happening, and I'm not sure how to fix this.

Help would be appreciated.

Seems like I always find out what's wrong AFTER I've asked for help. The brush mode had switched to "dissolve" without me knowing. Changed it back to "normal" and all is well.

How the hell did it change to dissolve??? I know I didn't click anything...

It can be as simple as a roll of the mousewheel when the brush is selected... Nothing to worry about, just something more you need to check before using tools
