Petition. Attn Kunos: AC dedicated server GUI executable (solved)

Hello all Assetto Corsa owners,

Sim Racing Australia have started a petition designed to politely engage with Kunos Simulazione to bring attention to the concern that the process of setting up Assetto Corsa dedicated server's is overly convoluted, that it's extremely difficult for the end user who is not so 'adept' with modifying/editing PC files and that generally it's basically flawed in it's current form/process.

The petition seeks to have Kunos acknowledge the cause for concern and it seeks to have Kunos develop a GUI based executable that the end user manipulates to have the server set up how it's required - Just like rFactor, GTR 2, Race 07 and Game Stock Car Extreme before it had done so successfully and so simply.

We encourage all sim racers whom own Assetto Corsa to unite for the common cause of having the processes of setting up and for the running of AC dedi servers fixed by Kunos and thus made far easier for your league admin's to run for you and your respective communities.

You can visit the petition below;

(Note any signature's featuring comments with profanities or aggressive communications will be deleted and will not be submitted.)
(Sim Racing Australia does not claim to represent any one person nor group of people. Your signature on this petition (while encouraged) Shall be placed their on by your own free will - If you think the result of this petition may end up in having Kunos fix the process, please sign it. If not then simply don't sign it.)

Admin - if you feel this is not appropriate to have this advertised here please delete the thread.

I humbly and sincerely apologize if it wrong.

The petition is done in a polite, courteous and meaningful way with the end goal simply being to have some meaningful change implemented to make it easier to run AC servers for every one.

Seriously. Which user uses a desktop environment (gnome or whatever) on a SERVER?

Imo it is not needed at ALL since most servers are operated with command line (ssh) only.

Besides from that there may be a big security risk running a server without knowledge...

And did you ever found the acServerLauncher.exe in your steamapps/assettocorsa folder? There you can setup everything in a GUI on your PC and then all you have to do is uploading the server files...

Hi Simon,

Thanks for your reply.

Yes,,, Launcher in steam folders, yes. This is process giving the issue many are having.

AC forums shows many, many threads directly relating to the pain people are having using this process to get there servers up and running...

There already is an executable server launcher that allows you to control all of the available parameters.

... Steam / SteamApps / common / assettocorsa / acServerLauncher.exe

The serverconfig.ini text file also works perfectly well, it may not look as pretty, or as approachable, but it's far from difficult (even for the newbies ).

Seems like you are asking for a feature that is already there.

Sure the acServerLauncher.exe isnt pretty, the advanced settings could be labelled up in slightly more plain english, and it would be nice if 'max clients' auto responded to the amount of cars you add on the Entry List tab - however, surely in the time it takes to construct a petition and post about the petition, you could learn all you need to know about the tool provided.

I understand its intended in good spirits, but is a petition really necessary or even the correct 'vehicle' to enhance a feature that is already in a computer game?

That acServerLauncher.exe GUI is found on your local machine as you state via your personal steam account's folder tree.

Lets be perfectly clear - It does not start the AC server, it only provides the serverconfig.ini file that needs to be taken to the remote dedicated server to make it run. Messy. Further one needs to edit a entrylist txt file - more mess and inconvenience.

Even the "newbies" as you put them are struggling with the current method/process - Go check the AC forums and all the post's complaining or asking for help, all the people who can't get it working.

Why not have a simple GUI installed on the actual remote dedicated server's hardware that will configure and run the server from the click of a mouse. Configure, RUN, done - Just like all of the popular previous sim titles did.

Lets ask for the same simple effective process implemented in AC!

Hi Paul, Thanks for the reply!

The feature is not there specifically as described by your peers... As per previous titles it was a far more simple process that was A LOT more efficient.

The process described by your peers still involves multiple steps and editing or transferring of at least two text files to the server hardware from your local machine to make it run. (or once could do it on the server hardware if they had a second steam account and purchased a second copy of the game - But why would anyone do that when all previous sim titles delivered without that requirement).

Don't be fooled.

The using of the serverconfig.ini file to configure the server is simple. Sure it may not be as clean as running an .exe, but it's simple, and it's effective. It's been explained in Georg's FAQ thread and Kunos have provided an explanation thread on the AC forums outlining what all the values mean.
The entrylist.ini file is only used if you need to pre book someone, otherwise you don't need it at all.
