Revised Range Rover Sport spied on test

Don’t expect to see this facelifted Range Rover Sport any time soon – it won’t go on sale until the summer of 2009.

Letting their guard down while carrying out winter testing, we snapped engineers putting the revised SUV through its paces with precious little disguise.

Along with a revised front bumper and grille, the Porsche Cayenne rival features several other subtle styling tweaks responding to comments and criticism from existing customers.

Inside, the main change is visible on the dashboard. Jaguar XK style dials have been fitted to give the Sport a classy new look. Our spy also reported hearing the engine running despite there being no key in the ignition, leading us to believe that a new keyless go system will be fitted.

Not scheduled to be unveiled this year, the revised model is likely to feature at next year’s Geneva Motor Show.

Facelift for Mercedes SUV?

These are the first pictures of Mercedes facelifted M-Class. Set to make its public debut at the New York Motorshow, the car gets a new look nose, and a revised interior aiming to improve the car’s fortunes in the competitive SUV sector.

While the enine range will remain largely unchanged, a new hybrid model is also rumoured to be under development. Powered by the same 4.0-litre V8 diesel that debuted with the S-Class hybrid, the new M-Class will offer 340bhp and fuel economy of 30mpg.

Aimed at the new X5 hybrid, it’s expected that the car will go on sale in 2009.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage

The V8 engine and fabulous design make the Vantage a sure-fire hit.

On the road price: £82,800 - £91,000
For: Magnificent engine, fantastic styling, jewel-like cabin
Against: Firm suspension over bumps, very expensive

Driving
The Aston boasts a 4.3-litre V8 that, although it doesn’t boast class-leading power (380bhp) or pace (0-60 in 4.9 seconds), sounds absolutely fantastic. Above 4,000rpm, the exhaust rasps, barks and crackles, and the engine thrives on revs. There’s a choice of manual or Speedshift semi-automatic gearboxes; we prefer the latter, with its column-mounted paddles, though it does cost £3,000 more. To drive, the Vantage is incredibly entertaining. Over smooth surfaces, it sweeps around corners effortlessly, with the steering providing detailed feedback and the chassis proving superbly balanced – although if you push it right to the limit, the car will understeer. It’s not quite as taut as the best either, and the damping isn’t as well controlled. It gets unnervingly bouncy on bumpy roads – but it’s an involving driver’s car nevertheless.

Marketplace
The Vantage is offered in Coupe or Roadster guise, and both are beautiful. Indeed, the Roadster loses none of the hard-top’s beauty, and it’s hard to think of a better-looking convertible. What’s more, the detailing on both is superb. So it should be, given the high list prices. Aston offers several optional packs to boost handling and interior comfort, as well as an extensive array of exclusive options, while there have also been special edition models such as the bright orange N400. Rivals include high-end Porsche 911s, the Jaguar XKR, Maserati GranTurismo and Mercedes SL.

Owning
Simply opening the door is an experience to savour – it swings out and up on gas struts, revealing expensive materials, gorgeous lighting and an excellent seating position. The jewel-like instruments and crystal starter button add to the sense of occasion; yes, there are some Ford and Volvo parts on display, but they don’t detract from the air of sophistication. The Vantage is a strict two-seater, but the hatchback rear end ensures it’s almost as practical as more mainstream models. Compact dimensions and light weight mean economy comes surprisingly close to the 18.7mpg official average, which should offset the £800 service costs every 10,000 miles. Retained values appear to be excellent too – this is a much in-demand car.

Sensational V8 powered Caterham revealed – complete with a Ferrari price tag!

Take a look at the maddest Caterham the firm has ever produced. With an incredible 500bhp V8 powerplant the new RST-V8 Levante promises to be one of the fastest cars in the world – but it comes with a price tag of £115,000.

Caterham has joined forces with high performance tuning experts RS Performance to come up with this incredible coachbuilt flagship.

At the heart of the RST is the amazing 40-valve 2.4-litre V8 powerplant. Even in naturally aspirated form the unit produces 400bhp, while in supercharged guise the engine delivers 500bhp. Don’t expect the performance delivery to be at all civilised, as peak power arrives at a screaming 10,000rpm.

With a power to weight ratio of over 1,000bhp per tonne, the six-speed Caterham sprints from 0-60mph in less than three seconds and on to a top speed electronically limited to 150mph.

The range-topping thriller will only be built to order, and takes around 12 weeks to complete. The £115,000 price tag includes the extensive use of weight saving materials including a carbon fibre interior and Kevlar seats.

Maserati GranTurismo S

Set to be one of the star attractions at next week’s Geneva Motor Show, this is the Maserati GranTurismo S, a flagship that shifts the super-coupe’s emphasis from style to performance.

Key to the newcomer’s appeal is its mighty 434bhp 4.7-litre V8 powerplant – a 35bhp boost over the standard car. To help drivers make the most of the S it is fitted with Maserati’s quick-shifting automated manual gearbox.

What's more the range-topper also comes with powerful Brembo brakes as standard.

Buyers are also treated to a subtle bodykit and exterior styling tweaks to set the high performance model apart. Inside, the cabin is trimmed with leather and Alcantara and features a bespoke seat design.

Expect more details when the racy Italian is unveiled in Geneva on Tuesday 4th March.

Official pictures show how Mitsubishi's hot hatch is shaping up.

Mitsubishi’s hatching a plan to launch a cut-price Evo X – and this is how it will look.

These are the first official pictures of the Lancer Sportback, which will make its public debut at next week’s Geneva Motor Show.

The Japanese firm states the model shown here “closely previews the Lancer Sportback”, but the sporty elements of the design will all feature most prominently on a Ralliart badged hot hatch flagship.

At the front, the four-sided Mitsubishi grille gives an aggressive look, while 19-inch wheels hint at the performance on offer. The final production version won’t have the extreme looks of the Evo X, but will offer a cheaper and more practical alternative to the four-door flagship.

The Ralliart gets a 238bhp version of the Evo’s 2.0-litre turbo engine and a six-speed semi-automatic gearbox. This combination should launch the five-door from 0-60mph in less than six seconds.

When all variants of the five-door go on sale in the UK later this year, they are expected to account for 80 per cent of Lancer sales in Britain.

Rumoured to be powered by a twin-turbo V8 BMW engine shared with the new X6, the mid-engined model will sprint from 0-60mph in around 4.0 seconds and on to a top speed in excess of 175mph.

Codenamed the Eagle, it’s not yet known what the high performance model will be called in showroom ready form. All will be revealed when the Lotus makes its official debut at the British Motor Show in July.
