Today we received this community letter from SimBin. RaceDepartment.com will discuss the headlines in our staff forum also because of some parts regarding Modding. Feel free to start discussing in public while the staff is forming its own vision for RaceDepartment.

Hi there

It has not been long since my last mail, but things are happening at a frantic pace in SimBin at the moment.
Here is an update on all that’s going on….

STCC – THE GAME
We have announced the “Swedish Touring Car Championship” game which should add even more drama and excitement to simulated touring car racing with the new car models which will slot in perfectly with your RACE 07. The addition of another rear wheel driven car should provide for some epic battles with the BMW’s, and the tight and undulating Swedish tracks are the perfect venue for it.

To answer the main question regarding STCC, it is not just for Swedish simracers! It will be available to everyone via Steam and will also be available in shops in some territories. Release date is yet to be determined. Like with all other expansions to RACE 07, you will get it at a very favorable price if you already own RACE 07… if not, then it’s a great package to get you started ;)

GTR EVOLUTION
As you all probably know by now GTR Evolution has been released worldwide on Steam, I hope many of you will have dedicated servers ready and I know quite a number of your communities have planned special events to celebrate. We are extremely happy with the feedback from you so far and we hope GTR Evolution will indeed become the platform of choice for your leagues in the future.
Our data and our physics engine is more precise than ever and as many of you have already experienced the tire model in GTR Evolution is far more advanced than in previous titles.

We are aware that those of you into endurance events are missing some features, but it’s impossible to cram every cool feature into a game and ever have it released, that’s a simple fact of life. Even if we would love to get everything into the final release we have to make very hard choices regarding features constantly, and adding endurance features is so much more than just slapping in a new tire compound and some dark skies. We only do things if we have the time to do them right!

One review called GTR Evolution a “Best of SimBin release” and we like to think that line hits the nail on the head. It has all the best content from previous titles, the best physics, the best graphics and the best gameplay all rolled up into one neat package.
Yup we are proud of the results as you can see, and our only problem is how we are going to top this one… but we have a few ideas ;)

RACE Pro
Also this past week we showed off our first ever console title at the European Games Convention in Germany.
So far the reviews have been extremely positive, and we are ready to take on the big titles like Forza and Project Gotham and show that true simracing CAN be done on a console. Believe me, RACE Pro is no simple arcade title and it will turn heads in the console world when a title with focus on simulation hits the shelves. That being said I think it is important to underline that we are still developing for PC as our core business and of course we are as dedicated to true simulations as we have ever been. RACE Pro should be interesting to you PC racers as well since it gives the first view of our multi platform “Lizard” engine.

MODDING
In the past SimBin have applauded serious modding groups and have even employed the help of some as well as recruit new employees from the groups of talented individuals. We have every intention of supporting quality mods, customs skins and all the other changes that make our games come alive with the help of dedicated modding communities across the globe. GTR Evolution underlines this statement by being relatively easy to add new and unique content for.

But… SimBin can no longer afford pouring funds into creating unique quality content for competing titles. Lately the mutual respect that used to exist seems to have vanished and now straight conversions between competing titles are done in a matter of minutes after we release a new game. Our Nürburgring and Macau are prime examples. Unless something is done to stop this we will no longer be able to afford creating quality content and with 10Tacle fresh in memory I think it is clear that some individuals in the simracing community are effectively ruining it for everyone by their actions and that there will be no more new titles unless this behavior is stopped.

Straight conversions require little skill, no imagination and it is nothing but petty theft. True mod making is the addition of NEW, fresh and unique content to a title… not stealing content for use elsewhere. I hope all of you will consider this and take matters into your own hands by not allowing these conversions in your own community.

This is a wake-up call. Things must change now if SimBin are to deliver any new titles on PC, and the change can only start with you dedicated simracers saying “enough” !

If you have ideas on how to change the way things are at the moment or what can be done to ensure a more “fair” way of modding in the future then let us know, we are interested in solutions much more than in assigning blame. The alternatives are either lawsuits which we really don’t want to resort to, moving all developments to consoles where things are not stolen, or you guys taking up the challenge and create an environment in YOUR community where conversions are not accepted. If you agree with our stance in this, then let your concern be heard in those forums and gathering points where piracy seems to be an accepted standard.

We hope you can make a difference in the battle against theft and piracy while allowing the true modders to create their works of art adding to the fun and enjoyment of everyone

FINAL THOUGHTS
With GTR Evolution released, STCC around the corner and RACE Pro not too far away this has been a furious ride for SimBin the past months, but we have more in the pipeline and we expect to deliver more quality content in the times to come. We have some extremely interesting licenses lined up and you will be the first to know when we are ready to unveil our next project.

Finally we are happy to see this family of fansites, communities and racing leagues grow along with us and we are proud to see the passion and dedication our titles inspire… so keep up the good work!

GRATE!!

I'm in the process of building a new PC, when I am done it will be bad a**. I'm some what new to Sim racing but I am here to stay. I love this sport..
with this news, how will I brake it to my wife I need to buy a console, after just spent a bunch of $$$ on my new rig...

BTCC, BTCC one can hope one can dream, one can also hope for grid babes ...lol

Good news from Sim-Bin.

WRT a current BTCC game IMO that would be a bit dare I say it, boring, due to not enough variety of car makes in it to make it interesting. If its not a SEAT or a BMW you don't have much choice.

Now, if it was based on the old TOCA2 format with the bigger choice of factory teams that raced around those years ie. Nissans, Audi's, Volvo's, Peugeot's etc it would be one helluva sim, again, IMO.

I am still using a single core AMD athlon 64 3000+ with a GIG Ram, MSI Platinum SLI series mainboard. I have just bought a second hand Nvidia 8800GTS graphics card and it has made such a difference to the performance that i am trying to find another one to run them in SLI. If I can find another one I will certainly keep the pc for another year, maybe just add a GIG memory. :)

They have good deals for video cards here. I think I have a used 320mb 8800 GTS. I'll check when I get home. Is yours a 320mb, 512mb or 640?

great news, i am also happy to hear f1 mod in the works it should boost moral for all f1 enthusiast :amen:

going back to the whole modding issue, what is MMG going to do with their F1 08 mod, cos surely thats based off rfactor? i think SimBin should understand that conversions from other games can open up new possibilities for the new game, and not all should be overlooked, anyway isnt part of their games (GDB PLR files etc.) taken from ISI's games. and im sure the FIA GT Game must have many elements of GT Racing 2002 for F1 2002 which simbin develpoed.

MMG made the content themselves (that's what they claim?), so they will do what they want with their stuff

The issue is with people ripping stuff that they have no rights to.

Simbin licensed the ISI engine.

So much of this goes over my IT iliterate head, but certain points stood out to me in that open letter (take a seat as this may take some time :)):

Modding:
Piracy is piracy, end of story. It happens, it is wrong. People will still do it and people will then complain when they have to suffer the consequences. I therefore don't really have a lot to say about the modding issue.

Moving to consoles:
Now this got my attention and I definitely have a few thoughts on this. I get the thinly veiled and subtle subtones that Simbin see the console market as lucrative and would like their piece of the pie (fine - capitalism is still alive and kicking - barely :)). However - I don't think it is necessary to make the statement that this is the futue if piracy of their content does not stop on PC's.

Simbin will build their business strategy based on where they see developing markets and potential profit, gain and opportunities to expand brand 'Simbin.' These decisions will not be shelved tomorrow if modding is eradicated from the face of the earth.

Are we to believe that Simbin will not decamp to consoles if a) modding stopped tomorrow, whilst b) the size of the simracing community remains as it is currently, c) the console market continues to expand, d) Microsoft and Sony continue to develop next generation consoles? I don't think so.

One has nothing to do with the other. I am not saying that neither are valid arguments, as they both are completely justified. I am just saying, don't dress one up in the clothes of the other.

The sim racing community (developers not end users) really needs to catch up with the flight sim community. Both are niche markets but one is light years ahead of the other when it comes to originality.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is the modders dream of dreams when it comes to Flight Sims. You buy the universe with some stock planes and then other companies sell you the planes. They also have live weather (imagine that :)). You either use the built in weather generator, the option to have MFS download the weather from the internet or you buy an external programme that will do it for you. What do you get? Live weather for any location on the planet. Imagine if you will, you turn up to your chosen track and experience the weather conditions that are there right now1 (Not likely to see this in a racing sim any time soon :)).

The product:
Simbin, as part of this community, could do well to look at their product. I love sim racing and I love collecting new titles that offer something 'new.' Simbin are currently hell bent on adding content to the Race07 framework. I bought GTL (stand alone product) and it was great, new and innovative. I bought GTR (stand alone product) and it was great, new and innovative. I bought GTR2 (stand alone product) and it was great and an evolution.

I then bought Race07 (stand alone product) and to me it was new and innovative. Now we have GTR Evo (packaged into Race07), new (???), innovative (???). I waited and waited for Evo because I was piqued by the word 'Evo.' To me it seems more Devo than Evo because it doesn't appear to have added anything new to GTR2. You will point out that I made a mistake, as it is an Evo of Race07 and not GTR2 (stupid me :)). Does this mean we may one day see GTR3? (not holding my breath :D).

STCC? (packaged into Race07). Race07 is looking more like rFactor each and every day as it is a one stop shop for multiple variants of the same product (different cars on the same tracks).

Conclusion:
Simbin have every right to look after their content and make decisions about the future of their company. It is just a shame that they appear to be following the same model as many governments around the world - make the end user, who is mostly honest and forthright, responsible instead of leading the change yourself. What do I mean? How many of you drive and are being taxed out of your skin to make you pick a cleaner car, smaller car, energy efficient car? How many car makers are being legislated to build smaller cars, cleaner cars, energy efficient cars?

End :skywalker:.
