New to sim racing - Help

Hi guys, I’m going to be building a pc for sim racing over the next week and trying to decide what equipment to get.

Unfortunately it needs to be a desk based (Ikea Karlby/Alex) rather than purpose built sim rig and i’ll be using a single 34inch monitor along with VR eventually.

As it needs to be clamped to the desk I don’t think i’ll be able to go DD so looking to get the Fanatic ClubSport Wheel Base V2.5, ClubSport Pedals V3 and Formula V2 rim.

• I’m going to be playing on a variety of sims such as Iracing, AC and ACC, Raceroom, Dirt Rally and F1 so would I be better with a two rims such as the Formula V2 and BMW GT2?
• Similar to the above, am I best to get the shifter and handbrake?
• Will the pedals be fine under the desk or will I need to build some kind platform to stop them moving around?
• Is it worth getting the brake Performance and or damper kit for the pedals?

Theres no reason you cant use an osw on a desk worse case scenario is you have to turn down the ffb too csw 2.5 levels.

Thanks Daniel, I was wondering whether I may be better just holding out for the DD1 and turning it down if needed however it's probably going to be some time until I'm going to have space for a dedicated rig.

Maybe an OSW is too much for a newbie. I would spend the money in good rims, a good bucket seat, shakers, a button box, shifter, handbrake, a dashboard monitor... You will have time in the future for an upgrade on your steering wheel and pedals, if you need it. Of course, driving on a desk doesn't mean that you have to sacrifice too much, as long as your desk is robust. Most comercial steering wheels and peripherals have decent clamps. Pedals are very important, and you need a way to attach them and prevent them from moving. I also started with your idea of using my desk. I bought a bucket seat and made a stand for it to have it at the right height. Then I designed a mechanism to attach the pedals and even have distance regulation. All was made in MDF, ugly but very simple and rock solid and effective. One advantage is that I also could use the bucket seat for other purposes than driving. I also used the Fanatec clamp to hold my HE shifter and my button box. Take a look at these pictures. Then, after some time, I moved to a full cockpit, so I no longer had to mess with mounting and unmounting all the stuff.

I built my race-frame to work within my work desk-space and it even incorporates a DD-wheel and D-box motion system so, there's a lot you can do in a very small space - if needed. In the early days, I had multiple transducers mounted to my office-chair with about 3000-watts of power available, and a rudimentary frame-work to maintain seat to pedal spacing. It worked surprisingly well for the first couple of years before moving to my current system.
