Today’s edition of our daily motorsport photo of the day features Le Mans legend, Tom Kristensen, taking the chequered flag after winning the 2013 Le Mans 24 Hour.

In a tragic race marred by the death of Allan Simonsen, Tom Kristensen notched up his 9th 24 Hours of Le Mans victory alongside Allan McNish and Loic Duval.

Loic Duval set the fastest time qualifying behind the wheel of the race-winning #2 Audi Sport Team Joest entry, lapping the Circuit de la Sarthe in a time of 3.22.346. However, when the race commenced on the Saturday afternoon, the #1 Audi R-18 and the Toyota TS030 of Anthony Davidson quickly jumped the pole-sitting car.

As the sun began to set over Le Mans, the #1 and #3 Audi’s struck problems in a dramatic twist, leaving Kristensen, McNish and Duval to assume the lead of the race. They managed to retain the lead for the remainder of the event, and crossed the finish line just over a lap ahead of the #8 Toyota Racing TS030.

It was an emotional victory for Kristensen for a number of reasons, most prominently for the death of his fellow Dane, Allan Simonsen, earlier in the race. It was Duval’s first victory in the highly prestigious event, while it was a third time on the top step of the podium for Allan McNish.

The sight of the worn out #2 Audi R-18 crossing the start/finish line for the final time is one of elation for all fans of the iconic German marque.
