Map a button to show fps in VR?

I'm using AutoHotkey to define the functions of my button box. I would like to make one of my buttons toggle on/off the performance hud. So, I have used the Oculus Tray Tools utility and I have defined hotkeys for "HUD Performance" and "Close HUD" . The problem is that these hotkeys do nothing until you manually select the performance option under the game settings / visual hud, every time your start the tool, which makes no sense. Any idea?
