Le Mans test day: Porsche leads at day's end

Le Mans.png

Porsche have closed off the Le Mans test day as the team to beat as they topped both sessions at the close of the day with two record breaking times on a day limited by mixed weather conditions.

Both the #18 and #17 cars broke the test day lap record in the first and second sessions as they made a strong start to their Le Mans schedule, becoming the only team to drop into the 3:21s. Behind the Porsches rest the three Audi's who sit just around just a second behind Porsche whilst Toyota struggled in both sessions, ending the day over four seconds slower than the #17 Porsche.

Elsewhere in LMP1 Rebellion marked their return to the WEC with a strong showing of 9th and 10th in the second session of the day and just three seconds slower than the trailing Toyota, whilst Team ByKolles endured a slightly more difficult test as despite a top ten finish in the morning session, their running was severely limited in the second as they propped up the field. Finally Nissan look to face a significant uphill battle as despite boasting the highest top speed through the speed traps, their best effort of the day was a staggering 22 seconds slower than Porsche's.

In LMP2 it was OAK Racing that ended the day as the leader of the class with the #34's best time of a 3:41.919 putting them around seven tenths ahead of the #48 ELMS entry of Murphy Prototype's best time in the second session

Back in the GT classes Aston Martin continued their good form this season as they just pipped the #64 Corvette by just over a tenth of a second, with the #51 AF Corse of Bruni, Vilander and Fisichella coming home third in class. Aston Martin also lead the way in GTE Am with the #98 car of Dalla Lana, Lamy and Lauda recovering from a troublesome first session to post a 3:59.338, putting them a full second clear of the #61 AF Corse of Mann, Gianmaria and Cressoni who topped the morning session.

One final shoutout goes to the two LMP3 entries to the Le Mans test day, featuring GT Academy driver Nick McMillen and former Olympian Chris Hoy at the wheel, ended todays session 45th and 57th and 32nd and 57th overall respectively.

Pretty proud to be a kiwi! A great showing of New Zealand drivers at Le Mans this year... Hartley, Bamber, Evans, Stanaway... Not bad for a country of only 4 million! Racing is part of our culture and our heritage (Bruce McLaren!) ... Really looking forward to see what my countrymen can do!
