After the horrific accident that befell the Frenchman Jules Bianchi at last Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix, the FIA's head of communication Matteo Bonciani has stated his latest condition is "critical but stable".
The accident occurred during a treacherous Japanese Grand Prix which took place in damp and wet conditions as the local area battled with Typhoon Phanfone. Late in the race Adrian Sutil crashed his Sauber at Turn 7 of the Suzuka track, when a lap later Bianchi cruelly went off in the same spot and collided side on with the tractor deployed to recover the Sauber.
The race was immediately red-flagged once it was known Bianchi was unconscious and was quickly transported by ambulance to the nearby Mie Prefectural General Medical Centre, roughly 10 km away from the circuit. A CT scan revealed he had suffered a "severe" head injury and required emergency surgery.
Despite widespread reports coming out on Sunday that he was making quick progress and was now breathing unaided, these unfortunately proved to be false as he remains attached to a respirator. FIA head of communication Matteo Bonciani gave the press an update yesterday night that Bianchi's condition is "critical but stable" whilst also stressing "It should be understood that it is very, very serious."
Sky Sports F1 are also stating that the close friend of FIA president Jean Todt and the man who oversaw Michael Schumacher's treatment after his Skiing accident Professor Gerard Saillant, one of the world's leading orthopaedic surgeons will arrive at the Mie hospital today to provide assistance when needed in the treatment of Jules Bianchi.
It seems the severity of the injury will mean a long recovery process for Jules Bianchi, although the entire motorsport community will be hoping and praying that Jules can recover and rehab as quickly as possible as he is a popular member of the F1 paddock, with the F1 community carrying on with this weekend's Russian Grand Prix with heavy hearts.
Whilst many people are beginning to speculate and give their opinions on the accident and if it should have happened, the most important thing now is simply Jules Bianchi's condition and treatment. I'm sure everyone reading this will join me in wishing Jules Bianchi a very speedy recovery and we all hope to see you on the F1 grid as soon as possible. What are your thoughts on the accident?
