Motorsports and the world at large suffered a terrible loss on Sunday when IndyCar driver Dan Wheldon died in a crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 2005 IZOD IndyCar Series champion, Dan won 16 IndyCar races in his career including the ’05 and ’11 Indianapolis 500s, and was among the sport’s most respected and well-liked drivers.
In commemoration of Dan’s life and career, iRacing is holding the Dan Wheldon 77 on Saturday, October 22 at 16:00 GMT (12 Noon Eastern time). The race will consist of 77 laps of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (77 in honor of Dan’s car number at the track he enjoyed such great success) in the Dallara IndyCar.
The event is open to all iRacers who own the car / track content. As Dan had been an active supporter of the Alzheimer’s Association, iRacing urges everyone participating in the event to contribute to the organization in his name: www.alz.org
Besides the official event at iRacing we also have our own tribute race to honor Dan Wheldon in the iRacing Club this Thursday at Indianapolis and everybody is invited to join.
