i7-5960x Good Enough for Next Gen Nvidia 3000 Series?

Hi all -- I am currently running a computer I built in 2015 -- Core i7-5960x, 32gb 2400 Ram, first gen m.2 SSD, on an X-99 Deluxe mobo. Currently running a GTX 980 but plan to upgrade that to the highest end 3000 series card that comes out this fall.

I am planning a rig, once products become available, to run VR primarily (Reverb G2) and potentially triple 1440p down the line. (iRacing, AMS 2, AC, ACC, etc.)

Do you guys think I should sell everything now and build a new PC when the new cards come out? Or stick to what I have now and simply upgrade the GPU? Time is not much of an issue, I can wait until the fall because I have zero components right now -- I would prefer saving money by not having to build a new computer, but I also don't want to pay so much for a GPU that is bottlenecked by older technology.

Thanks in advance!
