F1 2010 [HELP!] Difficulty Problem!

I am trying to qualy for Catalunya on amateur difficulty and i always get 10th or around somewhere in middle of the grid,but i am trying my best to get a very fast lap time,but i cant get any better than 1:26:2xx,why is this?
The AI on the track when i overtake them are very slow,all of them,they are not driving at hi-speed and are easy to overtake,but they post a 1:24:xxx lap time(the ones from 1st to where i am 9-11th on the grid) is this because i play with the Weel and ALL assists off?I play with the settings from the "F1 2010 settins" thread for Spain.
Why am i so slow?Can someone please tell me what to do to be faster,help me?
