GTR2 CTDs no matter what I do

Hey everyone, so I'm trying to get back into GTR2 after a few years but I can't seem to get it up and running on my laptop which is really puzzling me.

Firstly, my laptop's specs:

AMD R7 5800U
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050Ti
16GB RAM (LPDDR5 I think)

I already have GT Legends working, so GTR2 should work generally the same, I know the computer is capable of running it. However, when I launch the game, I make it into the menu as normally, but trying to set up a race in any mode causes a CTD. No matter whether I choose race weekend, open practice, driving school, or whatever else, it always crashes before I even get the chance to change any of the session settings.

I have been trying to look online for fixes but I haven't found very many, and the ones that I have found haven't worked out. Currently, I have GTR2.exe, GTR2Config.exe, and sudo.exe all running as administrator with compatibility mode for Windows 7. Please advise.

if GTR2 is starting up into MENUs, usually the problem is missing files.
one other thing can be errors in PLR file configuration

so my advice would be, make a fresh install (via STEAM or CD), delete old PLR files (in your USERDIRECTORY)
make a copy of this fresh install and you can reuse it for your next GTR2 base need

no need to run GTR2 in special mode on Win8/X, but SUDO helps when using local GFX-CONFIG

Try to run gtr2 with xp service pack 2. All most every body runs gtr2 with xp service pack 2 instead of win7

so I've tried different configurations as far as the EXEs go, here are my results:

Win 7, admin - crashes when I enter player name
Win 7, no admin - game never tries to start
Win XP SP2 (forces admin mode) - crashes when I enter player name
no compatibility, no admin - game never tries to start
no compatibility, admin - crashes when I launch the game

After I enter the player name and the game crashes and I re-launch it, the name that I entered is saved, but the game then crashes when entering any session as it did before (on both Win 7 and Win XP).

NOTE: The file I used to launch the game every time is a copy of GTR2.exe RENAMED TO sudo.exe. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY I CAN GET THE GAME TO START, REGARDLESS OF CONFIGURATION. If I don't do this, the game does the infinite graphics config loop.

To respond to mucho, I tried deleting both the player profile folder under GTR2/UserData AND the files in Documents/GTR2, but still I was met with the same issue. I'm very much stumped. To clarify, I'm using the Steam version.

@Wormyyy,

For Steam version, there's a plugin that fixes the startup crash that you mention and many other things. You can find it at thecrewchief.org (I'd suggest staying away from Beta version until you are very familair with the plugin and want to help testing it. "Stable/release", ahem, version is included with the Crew Chief app). Make sure to check the plugin manual on how to start GTR2 with this plugin if you'd like to try it.

However, crashes after game loaded are likely due to corrupt/missing files, so that's not something plugin can fix (although plugin fixes few crashes that can happen with certain tracks, who knows maybe that's the issue). In Steam, you can run integrity check on the game, and then I would suggest copying that "checked" version and saving it for future use as a clean base for mods. You can run Steam GTR2 without Steam even running, and it doesn't matter where you copy GTR2 to. Even after integrity check, you may see game starting fine only once - and plugin fixes this exact problem.

One last thing - start with a small grid. For bigger grids you'll need 4gb patched GTR2.exe (easiest to get it from HQ Anniversary patch). But even 4gb patch has limits, and that's the biggest issue in GTR2 - limited address space.

If you use non steam version..

Step 1 Install a new gtr2 folder
Step 2 download from here or esportracing.de the no cd patch/exe
And add it to your gtr2 folder.

Step 3 download 4gb patch
And patch the gtr2.exe with admin rights.

Step4 add to the gtr2 exe admin rights and xp service pack 2

If that dont work probably your vid driver is too new for gtr2

You can try using a other vid card driver. And disable raytracing.

Side note: install directx 9.0c from here

So, I actually discovered that the laptop doesn't use the 3050Ti for games, only creator workloads, and only uses the Radeon APU graphics, so unfortunately not the issue here
Also gtr2 can have issues with screen resolution above full hd.

Even for online use.
There is a topic on koelschbierbunde about this
I'm just running it on 1920x1080 at 32 bit, same as my GT Legends install (which works as normal)

Currently, I'm trying to just run the game completely as standard, no mods or anything. I have done multiple integrity checks and a few fresh installs and still no change, I will try the plugin as you said but currently the game only crashes after getting into the menus, so that may not help either (will give it a shot though).

The thing is that I can't even get to the point to where I can create the session and organise the grid - when I actually click on the 'race weekend' button on the main menu is when the game crashes. Same with open practice, and even the driving school.
Have gtr2 a log file? Where you can see why it ctd.. that would make life a little bit easier
It creates the 'minidump' files but I don't know how to open them (notepad doesn't work correctly)

EDIT: I just found out about WinDbg, going to install that and try and analyze the dump files.

I think that the line we're looking for is this one here:

ERROR_CODE: (NTSTATUS) 0xc0000005 - The instruction at 0x%p referenced memory at 0x%p. The memory could not be %s.

"Application Error 0xc0000005 (Access Violation) error is usually caused by your computer not being able to correctly process the files and settings required to run a particular program or installation."

So, I don't exactly know what to do with this information. I would think that the game would have permission to access memory since it runs as administrator, but I guess maybe not.

For trace:

gtr2.exe -trace=1000

Last lines in trace file might indicate the reason for crash.

This will create "USERDATA\Log\trace.txt" file but I don't remember where, in game folder or my documents. With plugin installed, it will be in game folder.

Have you followed my steps?

I have amd and nvidia machines and never ever had any issues with it (same steps )

Have you tried a other no cd.exe/patch. There are faulty ones out there

Yeah that was wat i was looking for..
-trace=

If i google the error, most people that have this have it with a laptop.
(Not all) when it happend with gaming, Some have it with outlook as a example

But on one page of microsoft them self.. stated that it can be cause by a faulty ram bank or harddrive but if i read his specs its not a very old laptop (one of the newer ones)
Its not the first time a new laptop have a faulty ram bank and not the first place to look at.

But i dont think in this case its faulty hardware.

If you want i can take a look at you pc/game by remote desktop viewing.

To look at your settings, maybe you just overlooked something.

I also have a working client package for gtr2 (to join my dedicated server)
Its a non steam version with all the things you need for online but also offline. You can try that one if you want.

(It dont contain any cars or tracks so before you can use it you need to download a track and a car mod)

So, I actually discovered that the laptop doesn't use the 3050Ti for games, only creator workloads, and only uses the Radeon APU graphics, so unfortunately not the issue here

So if I understand this well, you try to launch GTR2 using this Radeon APU graphics ????
If that's so .... that's the reason why it crashes .... you have to choose your 3050Ti in GTR2 graphics settings.

I don't remember how you can manage to do so, but someone else might explain it to you.

How could i miss that one.. i miss read it, i thought he discovered he have no 3050ti onboard but only a amd gpu..

Well your right thats probably the issue here.

I dont use laptops for gaming or for that matter at all. And only use cpu's without any "onboard" gpu's so i cant help with this one

Its in the bios advanced tab.
You can turn it off there

As far i could find most laptops have that on auto..

Switching between them when no high power is needed. But older programs can get confused so they probably take the output of the apu probably to save battery power and the apu are probably output number 1

With now days tech, normally a onboard can do the work with games that arent demanding.

It seems that gtr2 dont let the laptop switch on the 3050ti but you can force it to use the 3050ti instead of the apu downside of this is it will allways use the 3050ti for video output so battery are drained faster and in most cases it dont free up ram that are used by the onboard because the dedicated video uses also the same memory.. the laptops i repaired did this. But if your lucky it will free up the ram used by the onboard it depends on what tech your using

My tip is when you use powercable instead of battery, leave the battery out when possible ( if battery can be easy removed offcourse )

Leaving a fully charged battery in while using powercable is not that good for a battery life
