The new GT Sport update is available now, and with it comes new content and some pretty cool new features for title.

Developed and released exclusively on PS4, GT Sport has been something of a departure from the usual Gran Turismo game concept of recent years. Initially pitched as a game that would focus heavily on the ranked competitive online multiplayer aspect of racing (something that they have continued to promote), the development cycle of the game has rather pleasingly also built up the offline portion of the software at an impressive rate - bringing GT Sport much more in-line with the original series concept than many expected at first announcement.

Continuing the trend of free content and feature updates to the game, version 1.36 adds a nice selection of new cars to the title, including the Japanese Super Formula machines, plus one or two rather interesting new features. Now included in GT Sport is the ability to manually deploy both DRS and KERS functionality within a number of the cars already available in GT Sport. Adding this feature is a nice unexpected move by Polyphony Digital, and goes some way to enhancing the driving experience across a range of content for the software.

According to PD, the feature is available for a range of different cars within the title (including the Lewis Hamilton Mercedes W08 Formula One car), and can be mapped to a button of the players choice.

These are the 'overtaking options' as outlined by the developer:

Increased Engine Output:
  • Super Formula Dallara SF19 Super Formula / Honda ’19
  • Super Formula Dallara SF19 Super Formula / Toyota ’19

Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS)

Consumes kinetic energy stored in batteries, etc. to provide power assistance using a motor. Activating “Overtake” will provide the maximum power assistance rate:

  • Dodge SRT Tomahawk X Vision Gran Turismo
  • Dodge SRT Tomahawk GTS-R Vision Gran Turismo
  • Dodge SRT Tomahawk S Vision Gran Turismo
  • INFINITI CONCEPT Vision Gran Turismo
  • LEXUS LF-LC GT “Vision Gran Turismo”
  • NISSAN CONCEPT 2020 Vision Gran Turismo
  • Toyota Toyota FT-1 Vision Gran Turismo

Drag Reduction System (DRS)

Uses moving wings to reduce air resistance during operation. This was previously performed automatically, but is now a manual function. Additionally, the DRS can only be activated while in an overtaking zone:

  • McLaren P1 GTR
  • Mercedes-AMG F1 W08 EQ Power+ 2017
  • Mercedes-AMG F1 W08 EQ Power+ (Color Variation) 2017
In terms of content, the new update adds four new cars (five if you consider the Super Formula engine variants), from classics right the way through to brand new open wheelers. The mix of different cars Polyphony have introduced with this new build is indeed impressive.

  • Ferrari 250 GT Berlinetta passo corto CN.2521 ’61 (N300)
  • Lamborghini Countach 25th Anniversary ’88 (N500)
  • Lancia Stratos ’73 (N200)
  • Super Formula Dallara SF19 Super Formula / Honda ’19 (Gr. X)
  • Super Formula Dallara SF19 Super Formula / Toyota ’19 (Gr. X)
