GT Legends skin tutorial

For free software, I like Paint.Net best http://www.getpaint.net/

I know lots of others (including Rupe & Knut) use The Gimp http://www.gimp.org/

Both can use the nvidia DDS plugin, which is what you'll need to export the painted files into GTL readable formats.

To create the *.bik files (the videos that show on the car selection screen) you'll need the RAD Video Tool http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm

I tend to take a good screenshot, convert it as a single frame video, and the game loops it so it looks like a picture.

When it comes to skinning I would say there are 3 main things to learn:
  • Learning how the painting tool works, Gimp/Photoshop etc. Getting used to working with Layers and the different painting tools
  • Learning how the car skins are built up. What the different layers represents (shading, highlight, car-parts etc), and how to build up a skin.
  • How to get the skin in-game. DDS export options and using the correct filenames etc..
The first part is a separate topic and is not specific to skinning. So this part is usually not covered in too much detail in the tutorials. But you can find a ton of good tutorials out there for that part.

The two last parts is specific to skinning and GTL. For this part, the tutorials posted in here is very useful.

Ehh I think I am too stupid for that. Lost few hours and as I can edit only default cars in GIMP, I cant manage Porsche 911s template, there is many layers and it is not so easy to operate as in default templates. I will try to do simple skin of the default car and I will see if it works in the game. If yes I will ask you to help with this specifc Porsche.

To follow on from Stuart's post on the Bik file
  1. To create the *.bik files (the videos that show on the car selection screen) you'll need the RAD Video Tool http://www.radgametools.com/bnkdown.htm
  2. I do it very simple.
  3. -grab a screenshot
  4. -crop and resize to 268*156
  5. -Open RAD Video Tool
  6. -Open the picture and click Bink it! I just go with default settings in the settings window that pops up My Bik file is labelled like this for the healey : 68_SIM_GTC_3000.bik
TGA File
  1. I use Gimp 2,8 and this is what i do to create a tga file
  2. take a picture of you car
  3. use the template for the icon. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/115891207/Trainer_SIM_GTC_ICON.xcf
  4. cut out the picture of the car like shown in the template and replace with your cut out car pic do this with a orange background and a a grey background.. one picture of you car is enough,
  5. Add your number of the car
  6. Merge the vissable layers, and tick clipped to bottom layer, and tick discard invissable layers and export. then reduce in size to 70x66 when you are ready to export to gtl.. save as a tga
  7. label them like this or as needed (car number)_SIM_GTC_(model)IconDisabled.tga My healey looks like this 68_SIM_GTC_3000IconDisabled .tga and the orange one looks like 68_SIM_GTC_3000Icon .tga

Thank you for this and other posts to all who have helped me so much in the last three days with getting to grips with creating a stand alone in GT Legends.

To add to whats above I have read somewhere that the video must be 200 frames, I've not tried more but it may be worth noting 268 x 156 AND less than 200 frames if its correct.
