Global Mapper for terrain

Hi all,

Do you know this tool : global mapper.

Perfect way to have a terrain in 5 seconds.
1) open your own data files
2) select your kml
3) click on donwload online data
4) choose SRTM Worldwide, OK
5) Select 3d to check...Crazy isn't it ?

So I try to import terrain, in 3dsmax to convert it in .3ds and import it with xpacks in btb... But they are to many data. :freaked-out:
And I don't find the good export from Global mapper

So I need you ! Do you think I'm in a good way ? Any advises ?

Thanks for your comments.

Maybe chop into pieces. Does someone know the limitations on number of vertices for objects? Doing like mrhorsepower explained I get 39000+ vertices .

On the other hand, maybe there is a tool to convert the xxx.3ds to backgroundmaterial like there are in the GB Xpack?

Still, when I export the .3ds file to my xpack/objects, I get the errormessage when loading the xpack into BTB saying the vertices are too many (39000). I saw the landscapes in the GB xpack are in .xml, but then again..this format can't be imported into xpack/objects, meaning they have to be copied/pasted?

mrhorsepower your link led me to this site, I had seen it before but don't understand how to use it.......

Imagine being able to use this with BTB..... It's pretty pricy but if you where serious it would be nothing short of amazing, the terrain features and plantable vegetation are simply outstanding. They do say it is used with gaming software. Unfortunatley I don't know where to start, but maybe some one will see it who understands how it works!!
Really worth looking at Brendon especially with your lidar stuff....

If you go to the page click the next frame button up top....... That get rfactor pumpin! the 3d grass is mind blowing.... all auto generated

There is a free version. I'm trying it out now.

Thanks for all the links!!

I checked out the free version and was completely lost :) (Not much of a moddler, so maybe others have had more luck?).

I also got side-tracked with a bunch of other links though, and found this one particularly interesting:

While searching for a free alternative to Global Mapper I also found this tool:

Hope those links are useful to others... for me the links in the tutorial to the Canadian Govt. websites for accessing DEM and other data files was the best find!
