F1 2014 Exhaust

The pinnacle of engineering in F1, a trumpet welded to the exhaust. :)

edit: I should have mentioned Mercedes are testing this today to see if they can increase the volume of the cars, and it is not a late April's fool.

We used those 'Stingers' on Volkswagen Beetles for years.
I'd always carry mine in the car for Manassas, Virginia Bug-out....no baffle.
They do actually sound very nice when you get a bunch of cars together at speed.

I don't dislike the sound as it is now but in fact I don't hear much of it in TV broadcast in comparison to the earlier seasons. So this is kind of a small atmosphere killer for me.

So a silly question comes to my mind: Could they simply increase the sensitivity of the track side microphones to compensate the loss of car sounds volume? I wouldn't mind hearing the crowd also a bit louder then.

I don't really get why this is still being discussed at all...

A lively freeway at ~30ft distance is roughly 85dB
2014 F1 at ~65ft distance (stands) is about 95dB
Jackhammer at 3ft distance equals 100dB (noise protection mandatory)
Hearing damage (long term exposure) starts at 80dB
Hearing damage (short term exposure) starts at 120dB

... I'm perfectly fine with keeping my hearing, thank you.

Not necessarily the pitch, but I agree that they need to adjust the sound somehow. The volume though is great I think with all the locking tyres and stuff you can actually hear now :D

So I guess this isn't you then?

These car will never be loud no matter what the teams do. That was predetermined when the turbocharger was added. When you drop a turbocharger into any exhaust stream, it simply 'chops' up the noise. Nothing done after the wheel will increase it...nothing. It might change tone, but that's it.
Personally, I like the sound. I love the whiz, whine and chatter from the power units.
