After a long wait, Codemasters have released the new update for DiRT Rally today, containing two new cars, 12 stages in Finland and lots of new and enhanced features.

Not too far off a full release, DiRT Rally has been updated to v0.8, with the 2001 Subaru Impreza WRC, and 2001 Ford Focus WRC included, the cars represents the two most recent British world champions, from a year they both fought hard for the world title.

The new stuff includes
  • A new, reworked handling model is also included for the 60's, 70's, 80's RWD and 2010-classes, with a major engine and downforce re-work, to make the cars more dynamic.
  • Custom Championships, to tweak the number of stages, AI difficulty and number of events, to set up a championship that suits you and the time you have to play
  • New engine sound for the 1995 Subaru Impreza
  • Mouse Support!
  • Invite Friend option for PvP events.
And here is the changelog!
  • The audio FX levels for the surfaces and kick up have been brought back so that you can hear all that gravely goodness.
  • We sent our Rallycross AI drivers to the opticians so that they can now see when they need to avoid other cars when they are approaching the joker entrance.
  • Now that they can see better they are also setting faster laps.
  • We’ve fixed the camera clipping in certain camera angles when you changed the Field of View.
  • We’ve made some Hyper threading fixes that should now prevent those annoying stuttering issues that some of you were having.
  • We’ve stopped the Engineer contract lengths and costs from being affected when competing in league events.
  • Toggling Push to Talk or enabling/disabling voice communications through the pause menu is now actually working.
  • The Reset Timer has now been increased to 15 seconds when attempting to get back on track. I know we said that before but this time it is actually in.
  • Cars will no longer roll over on the start in PVP races, ROFL.
  • We’ve made sure that the cars are visible on the start line even when collisions are turned off in PVP – they will still ghost during the race though.
  • Your PVP opponents won’t be showboating and driving around with the handbrake on anymore.
  • The gear setup will no longer be changing between stages without a service area.
  • We’ve fixed those odd camera angles that were being used in spectate mode.
  • The miles driven using owned vehicles in PVP now accrue towards unlocking upgrades for that vehicle.
  • When viewing a replay using an interior camera, the speedometers now show the correct speed for all vehicles.
  • We’ve fixed a whole host of other stuff too but they were too boring to call out in this list.

Here we can see the problem developers have when reaching for a real sim. Some people ask for "stupid" things from the real sim point of view. First nail the physics and FFB and then care about replays, visuals and so on (yes, they are important because some people want them, but first what should be first. From a real sim point of view).

And talking bout replays, mine don't work!!!! They keep freezing and can't not play them, any clue about this? Don't find any option or something ingame that can be changed in that aspect...

IMHO Replays should be on the bottom on the TODO list !

Yes to seat adjustment, Tarmac physics a little and replay saving, but steering wheel rotation? No thanks. I use a wheel (t500rs) to drive this sim, why would I want another virtual wheel in front of me? That would be silly.
It's probably the easiest thing to fix anyway. And even though I also find it quite weird to have two steering wheels before me, still it would be nice to see the driver doing something with his in the replays. As it is now, he barely moves the wheel at all.

Speaking of steering wheels, having the soft-lock implemented, as well as the automatic switching of the transmission type depending on the car selected would help immensely.

Try to free up around 3 to 4 GBs of drive space on your system drive. The replay file generated is pretty big.

Yet another insight on how tough these puppies are (from 6:38):

And here is a footage more closely resembling what we can see in DR from the "rear passenger" cam:
The stretches between the crests seem to be more concave. Though still not as much as the portion after the Red Bull bridge with the yellow building to your left in DR... On the other hand, even a laser-scanned course would probably differ after a year or two. It's gravel, after all.

If one would crank volume high enough and ignore all the other sounds besides the landing ones, it becomes obvious that there is a lot of jumping going on in there.
So, making the suspension more 'mushy' probably pays off in the end...

okay so I picked up my dummy from the floor, installed it again used tommis cam mod, (ive given up doing my cams) and tried the tarmac again. I didn't like the default feel, the way the wheel sort of snaps as you turn as if you have some extreme steering ratio. So I nudged the linereity to 2 in wheel options. Seemed to smooth out steering inputs which made it a bit finer to drive.

Also I found the ffb to be much weaker on tarmac than gravel, maybe its more smoother, but its very light.

Maybe it has to do something with the wheel you use? I didn't quite understand the first part about the snapping of it.
Even though my general FFB level is dialed down considerably, I have just enough feel from DR.

seeing the wheel can add immersion on several levels & not everyones wheel setup is the same. my monitor is on top of my wheel right now so i can get max ideal FOV which helps me (as in me, personally) be a better driver. and the car wheel is often nothing like mine but, with a visual representation of it right there in front of you, you might be surprised how the brain can be tricked.

dont know whether or not to take such posts seriously tbh but if you need an explanation...there you go. not going to argue about my personal taste though.

Played some more. E30 on finland is epic joy! Still, took the Focus for a Monte Carlo spin, set the front toe to -0.5 and the rear for +0.5 to try to eliminate the "crab walk". Not much difference because if looking at the replay in chase camera, the car has a nice trajectory over the slower (2) corners but the visual position of the car is off on the rear axle. This gives an illusion of centre pivot, but the front actually goes where it is supposed to, it's the rear that deviates.

did the daily thingy yesterday with the new subaru at monte and also felt the pivoty behaviour. felt the worst a car/track combo has ever felt to me in dr, which is a pity, because the same car feels responsive and splendid in finland or wales on my g27. weird.

don't think so, on gravel the car just feels like one block with four wheels whereas on tarmac it feels like a line turning around a central pivot. it feels more like seesawing a tanker round the cape of good hope is the worst metaphor coming to mind. if i find a little time in the coming week, i will try one of the cars i have played more often at monte to be able to better pinpoint any changes in the feel. maybe just the subaru after all.

I find the new Sub the worst on tarmac.

Is it me or ? - I just don't feel like I am driving a car with 300 BHP or is that rectified when all the car upgrades are in place ?

There are just not enough Oomph right now !

Otherwise I am loving it with the Finland stages with the Focus and Subaru.
