Surprise! A new GRID game is heading our way this September 13th.

Having been heavily focussed on their rally and Formula One games since 2014’s GRID Autosport released, Codemasters have today made the surprise announcement that the popular franchise will be making a return to console and PC this year – confirming GRID 4 is set to release this September on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

Featuring the usual mix of real world and fantasy tracks located across four continents, plus plenty of racing content from low power machines to Grand Prix cars, GRID should offer plenty of variety for players of all skill levels when it drops later this year.

Although exact details regarding the depth of content set to ship within the game has yet to be revealed by Codemasters, the British development team have confirmed the inclusion of Formula One machinery, in the form of at the least the 2006 Renault RS06.

With the new title having been developed in conjunction with Fernando Alonso and his eSport racing team, players will have the opportunity to race against the former double World Champion and 2018 Le Mans winner in game, as part of the structured career mode the title is so famous for in previous iterations of the franchise.

“We are also delighted to work alongside Fernando Alonso who is arguably one of the world’s greatest ever drivers” said Chris Smith, GRID Game Director at Codemasters. “His experience and knowledge has enabled us to make improvements to both the performance and handling of our cars. We could not be more proud to have signed him both in-game and as a Race Consultant. We can’t wait for our players to experience the final version when it comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC this September.”

As well as the inclusion of Alonso, images revealed from the game also reveal Brands Hatch will be included in the base version of the title, as well as a selection of tin top machines such as a TCR spec VW Golf and various American muscle cars.

GRID is well known as a ‘simcade’ style game, and it looks like the latest release will continue that trend, but with leanings towards simulation in order to appease a wide variety of driving tastes.

“GRID as a racing franchise is revered by our community and we are delighted to bring it to the current generation of consoles,” continued Smith. “The game offers so much variety and depth, from the number of modern and classic cars through to the locations and race options. Renowned for its handling, the game will appeal to all types of player, from casual drivers who want a lean-in challenge, to sim drivers who want some serious fun”

The game is already available to pre-order, and it looks like Codemasters will be adopting the DiRT 2.0 approach to post release DLC, with space set aside for 3 ‘seasons’ of additional purchasable content confirmed during the initial announcement.

I never liked the GRID series of racing games much. It has too much of an arcade feel for me, and it has story progression for pete's sake... in a racing game. Plus judging from the pictures it looks like that weird yellow tint remains.
 
Grid 1 was awesome, Grid Autosport was okay but i could never get into it after really sinking my teeth into sims, but i have a bunch of friends just getting into the racing scene and this might be the perfect way to rope them in. Something approachable for my console buddies, and something we can all play together. Hopefully the DLC system isn’t a bazillion exclusive pieces everywhere. That was just stupid in autosport. I will buy DLC no problem if the quality and size of the content is there, but i found it convoluted to have so much all over the place. Also, steam workshop support for setups would be cool.
 
Hope this game has a good driving mechanic for controllers, an area where simcades failed compared to pre 2005 games IMO. I don't mind to have a good game for a gamepad that also gives a good sense of connection and control. Let's see how things turn out.
 
Everyone likes to rip on Codemasters because they get off on slamming things that aren't a super hardcore realistic ultra-simulator (while simultaneously ripping all the vehicle and track models for use in rFactor mods created in somebody's basement that are just as unrealistic), but both Grid 1 and DiRT 4 had incredibly good career modes and that alone is usually worth the price of admission.

I really like Codemasters games. I like their race franchises (Colin McRae Rally/DiRT, ToCA/Grid, F1).
Also we have to accept that the Grid series is ToCA's succesor (like it or not, but it came to take ToCA's place in circuit racing).
Anyhow, this 2019 I'm something on a love-hate relationship with them: I really, really, really, like DiRT Rally 2.0, but the way they are managing its post-release, with 12 or more pages with bugs on the latest version of the game on the official forums a mere week after its release (I won't count the previous DiRT Rally content which they are bringing in as DLCs, because they are workig to remaster it at least, but come on, let us mod the skins of those cars!); then we have F1 2019, they are releasing it sooner than ever, but the fact that they bring only 4 new historic cars (most of them from 2010, so little historic that is), and no historic circuits... at least one, that is what the community requested... I have to admit in this F1 game that licensing is a serious issue, so I can give them that.
All this (you could say "wow, calm down, you only mentioned two games"... But I didn't want to mention older games from these franchises, it would be pointless), lead us to this new Grid game. Of course, its announcement trailer looks great, but that's how it works, and Codemasters are pretty good at it. Do you remember Grid Autosport? It had some great cars, but it had its points to critisice, like that interior cam, some rather strange car classes (you could have the R32 GTR running against an RS500 Sierra, but not against an M3 E30 (DLC car), they couldn't even race in the same circuits, and the same happened with Supertourers). So, I at least, will wait 'till September to see how all of this develops.

PD: I'm not saying its going to be a bad game, just that we shouldn't be too excited over an announcement trailer.

HOLY,this is sooooo cool info. I wish they will do it in style of RaceDriver Grid,or as you can say Grid1,because for it's time it was a fricking masterpiece. But I think this will propably be like Autosport 2. I ONLY ASK FOR 1 THING: PLEASE DO COCKPIT CAMERA PROPERLY,NO BLUR,NO BULLSHIT.
