The more the game engine can optimise by using a smaller texture.

pankykapus has stated that AC is good in doing the mipmaps while loading and advised against doing them by ourselves. Tho this may have been advice meant for cars only

Cars only. Our textures are often larger and we have many more off them. Without pre-made mip maps loading times go sky high. Most kunos textures have 4 to 5 mip maps in them.

Not really. Most of AC tracks have way more than 5. Recent tracks have all up to 13, lots of high resolution textures.
And besides, I have tried with all texture on 5, and guess what, NOT a single frame better, nor cpu occupancy. So it really seams AC does good with texture mipmaps.

It depends on the texture resolution. With a 1k texture there is little point to have more than 4 or 5. In the end it has nothing to do with performance as AC will make its own on loading if they aren't there. The main benefits of including your own are loading time is drastically decrease and you can use some tricks in the mip maps to minimize texture repeat at a distance.

You can do things like rotate the mips or apply some blur to the smaller ones to take out some detail to cancel out the repeat at a distance.

Here is a quick shot that shows how mip maps work. There are 8 mip maps with the last one being yellow. Only the mips on the grass detail texture has changed.
