Can't get car in gear until green light in races

I am not sure if this is happening to me only, since I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere (not just here).

When I start a race I am unable to put the car in gear until the lights go off and the race starts. That doesn't seem right, but now it's been the case for the last couple of releases. Is that intentional (I doubt it) or just an oversight or is it happening just to me?

I am sure, somebody will give you an explanation, why is this good for us, but yeah, you are not alone. That˙s intentional.

Well, they didn't implement penalties for false starts yet.

That would make sense, although I would as soon deactivate the gas pedal rather than the gears. Maybe it is easier to do it with the gear.

But mostly I wanted to make sure it wasn't something I overlooked or unique to my built.
