It's all the details on real roads that are so hard to duplicate, I've been struggling for a long time to get it feeling 'real' to the real-life version.
One handy tip might be to set up some cameras and planes with the imagery on, using the correct field of view, so you can almost camera match certain locations. If you use a tripod that is level, and a fixed aperture lens, you should be able to then get a really nice camera match in your 3D app to use as a guide.
All great fun.
Winter is a good time to do it too, since all the grasses and leaves fall back showing the proper shape of the verges and surroundings better.
