Are game mods worth it?

Hi
New here and wondering if adding cars from GTL, for example, is worth it. I'd love to drive an Escort! I know I can buy GTL, which is probably the best option, but if it's not too much hassle and the physics are correct for the car, then why not? Also, is there a tutorial on the site somewhere? I've searched around, but no joy as yet.

Thanks,
Mark

Why wouldn't it be worth it? The only thing mods cost you is download bandwidth :)
You can always delete the mod if you don't like it.

If you do install this mod, make sure you keep a record of the files added. To remove it, I had to delete every file manually, and there are looooots.
I didn't really like it, but then I have GTL and it was not nearly as good as GTL.

Obviously differing views as to whether I should do this, or not. What about adding non-standard tracks? Same views, or not? I'd like to race a few of the english tracks, like Mallory Park and Cadwell...

Most of the tracks are ok, some are obviously better than others in quality, and a few still have bugs for on-line racing, but we usually sort those out before using them.
Adding tracks is easy and removing them again if needed is also very straight forward.

My suggestion:

Get GTR Evo on DVD and install the offline version for testing purposes.

The great thing about having the offline version installed is the ability to test mods, tracks, and skins before you add them (or not) to your pristine online install.

It keeps your online install "clean" and it satisfies your curiosity about addons :)

adding and removing mods/tracks is pretty easy... so long as you keep the original rar/zip/whatever - you only have to open it again to see what you need to delete...

in terms of the escort mod, it was like three files and three folders... nowt heavy....

i *might* be writing a mod tool to help the masses manage this kinda thing in the near future... :thumb:

as to whether they're worth it - it all comes down to personal preference, so try them and see...

Thanks all for the suggestions. I do have the single player game installed already (it's where I started in case my early excursions were part of my stats!), so that's a good idea modding that version first. The main question, I suppose, should be, does the escort handle (and sound) like an escort? If it just uses the physics of another car, no point, in my opinion.

If you do a modding guide, Andy, I would be keen to hear about it.

Cheers,
Mark

GTL version is close to real thing back in the days. The Escort EVO is closer to those refered to in the Escort thread:

So they are both realistic in some aspects.

Hi
Managed to install the Escort from the site here, no problems. Sounds glorious, but having a few issues setting it up. Seems to have too much understeer which I can't dial out. Still good fun stiffening the back up and doing a bit of sideways stuff!

Thanks for the tip,
Mark

never played gtl but i enjoyed the excort mod for evo. dont know if it works online or if servers are running it tho.

in general mods are a mixed bag, really it depends on whos developing them and how much pride they take in their work.

So far not one single mod for GTR evo impressed me! All conversions and nothing original like in rFactor
