The long standing Sauber name will disappear from Formula One this season following confirmation the team will be rebranded Alfa Romeo Racing for 2019.

Having made their Grand Prix debut all the way back in 1993, the Sauber name will disappear from Formula One racing this year as the Swiss team strengthen their ties with the Italian Alfa Romeo manufacturer for the coming season - dropping the team name that has been an ever present in Formula One for 16 years and has achieved one race victory (under BMW ownership), and 27 podium positions.

“It is a pleasure to announce that we will enter the 2019 Formula One World Championship with the Team name Alfa Romeo Racing," said Frederic Vasseur, Team Principal at Alfa Romeo Racing.

“After initiating the collaboration with our Title Sponsor Alfa Romeo in 2018, our team made fantastic progress on the technical, commercial and sporting side.

“This has given a boost of motivation to each team member, be that track-side or at the headquarter in Switzerland, as the hard work invested has become reflected in our results.
Although entered under a different team name, the management and structure of the squad will remain as before, with Kimi Räikkönen and Antonio Giovinazzi fronting an all new driving strength under the leadership of Frederic Vasseur.

Following a period of financial and performance difficulties for the team in recent years, 2018 would mark a considerable upturn in form for Sauber, spearheaded by the formidable driving talents of Charles Leclerc, the small but popular team returned to regular points scoring potential as they lifted themselves above both Williams and Toro Rosso in the final constructors standings.

With fresh backing and an upward momentum on the back of a solid 2018, plus the return of former World Champion Kimi Räikkönen, the year ahead could well be a good one for Sau... Alfa Romeo Racing.

This is great, F1 it's more about branding than it's related to the actual road cars anyway. Alfa Romeo have history in both Formula 1 and racing in general :inlove:

If you ever been at Monza, it's already crazy with all the fans. Now it's going to be hysterical crazy :D And as a fan of Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, it's even better as I'm going to Monza this year as well :giggle:

An Alfa Romeo with a Ferrari engine is still more sexy than a McLaren with a Renault

I find really sad that this deal is purely marketing. It is a branding move at the end... The formula 1 budget will be limited soon so Ferrari need a satellite team like toro roso for red bull..

Good on Alfa Romeo to get the goahead for this immense marketing effort. I really do hope that this translates finally to a sound strategy to establish successfully old lost road car markets and come back as a succesful competitor in sporty and compact sedans and station wagons just to finally make it back into the motorsport we all LOVED them in.

Who remembers the last time of their prime?

Giving a modern F1 car these great names like Lotus, Aston Martin and now Alfa Romeo without even being the real deal is like putting lipstick on a pig. Everything becomes disposable and thus unimportant. Aston Martin? Yeah, whatever. In two years it will be given a different name.

Bad development imo. Once famous brands become irrelevant. Just adding the logo on top of the car is not all.
