Bleekemolen secures first win of the season

The reigning champion of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup continues on his success streak in 2009. At the first race of the year, Jeroen Bleekemolen (Netherlands) crossed the finish line first after twelve laps, more than 9.7 seconds ahead of his compatriot Patrick Huisman driving for SPS Performance. Third place went to newcomer Matt Halliday from New Zealand competing for the Federsand-Jetstream Motorsport team.

Already at the start, the 27-year-old Bleekemolen left his opponents no chance on the 5.4 kilometre Bahrain International Circuit. He defended his pole position, settled in at the head of the field and after the first lap had already managed to put a one second gap between him and René Rast (Germany, VELTINS MRS Racing) sitting second. Close behind sat Huisman, Halliday as well as both pilots of Walter Lecher Racing School, Damien Faulkner (Ireland) and Stefan Rosina (Slovakia). With an immaculate drive, Bleekemolen kept his opponents at bay for the rest of the race, retaining his lead easily to reach the finish line after the 12 lap sprint in 25:32.259 minutes.

Bad luck for 22-year-old Rast. Due to technical problems, the young German retired in lap eight. In fact, at last year’s first Supercup race, the reigning champion of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland didn’t see the chequered flag either.

Record-setting champion Huisman, who claimed four consecutive titles from 1997 to 2000, received the flag in second place in Bahrain. At his debut in the international one-make cup series, Matt Halliday secured a commendable third. On positions four and five were team mates Faulkner and Rosina.

Sixth went to Luigi Ferrara, last year’s winner of the Porsche Carrera Cup Italia. Behind the 26-year-old Italian, his team mate at Sanitec Racing, William Langhorne (USA), saw the flag in seventh, followed by Siso Cunill (Spain, Konrad Motorsport) and Abdulaziz Al Faisal (Saudi Arabia, Walter Lechner Racing School) ranking eighth and ninth respectively.

After posting fourth in qualifying, former Supercup champion Richard Westbrook (Great Britain, Federsand-Jetstream Motorsport), experienced bad luck and only managed tenth in the race. Already in the first corner the 33-year-old spun after a nudge with his team mate Halliday, relegating the Briton to the back of the field.

Jeroen Bleekemolen (winner): “That was a perfect race for me. Of course I was lucky that René retired. After lap four he was slowly closing the gap to me and then suddenly he’d disappeared. If you are put under pressure here in the heat it can get very difficult. Luckily that didn’t happen to me. I’m very pleased about that and I can’t wait for race two.”

Patrick Huisman (second): “I’m very happy with this result. I certainly profited from Richard’s spin in the first corner, but still, for the rest I drove a good and careful race. Most of all I’m delighted for my team. I have a new squad alongside and we didn’t test at all prior to Bahrain.”

Matt Halliday (third): “I should be happy about my podium result but the incident with my team mate is overshadowing it. I’m very sorry. I had no other option than to nudge Richard. It could have been a great start to the season, but right now the joy is under a cloud. At the end of the race I didn’t want to take any risks. Perhaps I could have achieved second but I decided to bring home a safe third.”

Television stations “Eurosport 2” and “Premiere” broadcast round two in Bahrain live on Sunday (26 April) from 11.30 hrs (CET).
Race result:

1. Jeroen Bleekemolen (NL), Konrad Motorsport, 25:32.259 minutes (152.006 km/h)
2. Patrick Huisman (NL), SPS Performance, + 9.709 seconds
3. Matt Halliday (NZ), Federsand-Jetstream Motorsport, + 11.272
4. Damien Faulkner (IR), Walter Lechner Racing School, + 12.600
5. Stefan Rosina (SK), Walter Lechner Racing School, + 13.536

Race two Bahrain

Bleekemolen 14.jpg
A perfect weekend ,
Bleekemolen experienced a dream of season opener. “It is true, the Bahrain weekend could not have been better”, he says. The reigning champion wins the start and laps the track quiet and constant. However, his gap to the rest of the field is smaller than the day before. "That’s because René was too strong, but nevertheless, I am really satisfied with the race." Bleekemolen wins with a lead of 2.5 seconds on Rast and Richard Westbrook. “Today, my face looks al lot kinder than yesterday”, Westbrook shines. "However, we still have to work at the car, but that should be done until the next round, I think we still can find two or three tenth of a seconds, what will be enough to close up to the front runners", the double champion hopes for his first victory in Barcelona.
Huisman 3.jpg
Good work - strong midfield
With a strong performance the twenty-fourold race winner Patrick Huisman finishes the weekend in Bahrain. Under permanent pressure of his opponents he drove without any faults and finished fourth. “It was not easy at all today, because my car was not perfect on the brake though we changed some things”, says Huisman. “I tried to keep it out of my head and concentrated on the exit of the corners. When Damien got under pressure from behind, I could gain a small gap again.” Being second in the driver standing he is not only the toughest rival of Bleekemolen, but also provides a double lead for the Netherlands.

Qualifying:

Istanbul-07-05-.jpg

The quick job - Best time for Bleekemolen
It is the quite special form of the short-time work, that is done by the quick drivers of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup in Istanbul. Right after the practice of the Formula 1 there is quite a lot of rubber on the 5.3 kilometres long circuit and especially this is the right time to go for a quick lap. Jeroen Bleekemolen, the leading driver of the championship standings, is the first who is out for a first attempt. With a 1:57.474 minutes lap he moves on top of the timing screens. “It’s simply a great season for me. After the small problems in Monaco we now found back to our good performance”, he talks about the qualifying in front of the 50 guests of the Porsche Club Istanbul.

After only 11 minutes work in the Qualifying the Konrad pilot relaxed leans back, talking with his team at the pit wall, watching the attempts of the opponents to beat his time. Leader of the pursuers is Richard Westbrook, who is the only pilot in the field who managed to set a personal best time at about halftime of the qualifying. With 1:57.753 minutes and a gap 0.279 seconds on the fastest, the double champion moves up beside Bleekemolen into the first row of the starting grid.

When two fight, the third rejoices

The drivers are leaning back, waiting for the end of a typical Superup Qualifying which normally provides the fastest lap times within the first minutes. However, this time the MRS boys proved the opposite. Like in a formation flight René Rast and Norbert Siedler moved up to the top close to Bleekemolens best time. “When the two got faster and faster in the last minutes of the session, I had go out on the track again, too”, Bleekemolen admits. In his last try he finds some further hundrets and with an advantage of 0.264 seconds he safes the pole position. “Due to the fact, that no other races take place here over the year the track gets quicker with every lap”, Richard Westbrook explains the untypical improvements at the end of the 45 minutes. “I would like to explain my prediction for the race with an English adage: When two dogs run for a bone, the third runs off with it”, he hopes for a possible battle between Bleekemolen and Rast.

Jeroen Bleekemolen wins the 5th round of the Porsche Mobil1 Supercup in Istanbul ahead of René Rast and Jiri Janak. The Dutch, with his third win extends his lead in the championship up to 24 points. Strong performance of the Czech Jiri Janak, who with third rank claims his first ever podium in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. Faulkner and Halliday after collision at the end of the field.
Fault-free on tour - Bleekemolen and Rast
“You have setup a brilliant car”, are the first words from second ranking René Rast after his return into the paddock. The Austrian with this compliment praises team manager Franz Konrad, who’s drivers Jeroen Bleekemolen defeated him. “My Porsche was a dream of a car”, the three-times race winner of the current season agrees. “At the beginning I took car especially for my tyres what provided a really strong Konrad-Porsche in the final phase of the race. I have seldom experienced such a brilliant car.“
Small mistake, hard punishment - Richard Westbrook
The complete field gets off the starting grid very well. However, pole-setter Jeroen Bleekemolen started better than the rest of the Supercup world and defended his leading position. Nevertheless the Netherlander didn’t manage to gain a gap on René Rast. While the two can gain meter by meter on the pursuers, Richard Westbrook starts his attacks on Norbert Siedler. The man from London passes easily passes the Austrian, however, drops back to sixth position only a few hundred meters later. "I had a problem with the brake and so I have fell back all of a sudden", says Westbrook. “It was a small problem and a small mistake, but to loose three positions was a hard punishment.” A short time later Norbert Siedler is attacked by Jiri Janak. For a couple of seconds the Czech sniffed at the podium position, then Siedler fights back and takes over his old position again. “I had a real turbulent beginning", says Siedler. “I simply battled to much and with that I destroyed my tyres – my fault", the Austrian admits.

Jeroen is turning into a Porsche Super Cup legend, pfffeew. Really impressive what he does the last years.

With Jeroen i always have the feeling he did a bit of a weird career planning. Starting in the highest ranks of motorsports (DTM etc) and since then only dropped on the ladder.

Maybe its his time to look up again. Great results in A1GP and Porsche would come in handy.

Bram, your absolutely right ,I think Jeroen will do good in GP2 or F2 or Formula-Renault,bud it always come down by Money -Sponsors etc.
Being asked to drive in what ever car or series is gaining Money, and I am not sure if he will go for F1,in what he is doing now will make him a all round driver and secure a long career as a racing driver?

Pole Time:

Rene Rast 58.jpg

First Pole - fifth times in the first row of the grid
“Of course I am really pleased about my first pole position in the 2009 season, however, I am also a little surprised, because my lap was not perfect”, René Rast was astonished about his pole position. “I could have gone faster in the third sector.” Right at the start of the 45-minutes session the chase for a quick lap was opened by René Rast. With 1.50.967 he managed the best time already in his first flying lap. With that he undercuts his Fridays best time by 3 seconds and will start for the fifth time from the first row of the grid this year. "Obviously we have setup our car to be quick in the sector one and two, because I was really quick in this parts of the track.” The reigning champion of the German Carrera Cup also undercut the last years best time of Jeroen Bleekmolen by about half a second.

Special moments in Becketts
Also championship leader Bleekemolen undercut his best time from last year, but finally was defeated by Rast with a gap of 0.259 seconds. “I experienced on of this big moments in the Becketts passage”, the Netherlander reports breathing deep. “I lost a lot of time, when I almost lost the back end of my car, however, I fortunately managed to keep it on the track. Under these circumstances I am happy with the outcome of the qualifying.” It was typical for the Silverstone track that he could not improve with his second set of tyres, so he had to settle with second rank. Like Rast, the reigning champion of the Supercup starts for the fifth time from the first row of the starting grid.

The Race

Pole-Setter René Rast after a poor start with a great fighting spirit wins against championship leader Jeroen Bleekemolen and clinched his first victory in the Supercup. Guest starter James Sutton finished third on the Podium. Huisman with fourth position is able to close up to Richard Westbrook in the driver standings. Drive-Through-Penalties for Rosina and Williams.

Full Story follows.
What a great day, I am really pleased”, shines René Rast after his first victory in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. “To still win the race after such a bad start is a dream.” The reigning champion of the German Carrera Cup had to work hard for this victory. "My start was a disaster. I had to much wheel spin and dropped back behind Bleekemolen and Williams”, the 22-year-old says self-critical.

Points are more valuable than the victory
“I am really pleased with 18 points”, says championship leader Jeroen Bleekemolen after finishing second. “René was really strong today. He was at the limit but he also was fair and finally could pass me with a ‘do-or-die’ manoeuvre. I didn’t take the risk to have another collision with him.” Lap by lap the two opponents were battling for the pleasure of the British fans. Two laps before the chequred flag Rast made his move on the Dutch and took over lead. “I didn’t want to become second again, I wanted to win”, he says. Behind this two the British guest starter James Sutton became the surprise of the Silverstone race. After a strong performance in the qualifying he settled in the top-group. "I had a great view to the action in front of me”, he comments on his third rank with a proud look at his first international Supercup trophy. "At the start I have lost some positions, but I could move up again and had a lot of fun to watch the fight for the victory.
One Point to go
In the driver standings of the championship, Patrick Huisman closed the gap to Richard Westbrook up to one point. "This was my present to the team for my poor result in the qualifying session yesterday", he is pleased about the fourth rank which earns him the points for third position, because guest starter Sutton does not get points. "At the beginning of the race I drove a little conservatively, otherwise a podium would have been possible." With that Huisman improves to 77 points and moves up right behind Richard Westbrook, who had to compete in the FIA GT race at the German Oschersleben this weekend.

Round 7-Nurburgring

Jeroen Bleekemolen clinched best time in the free practice session of the 7th round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the Nürburgring. The championship leader tops the list with an advantage of 0,083 seconds ahead of guest starter Jan Seyffarth and René Rast. Stefan Rosina and Jiri Janak finished fourth and fifth.

René Rast on Pole for his home race

11.07.2009 -
René Rast will start at the 7th round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup from pole position. With a 2:03.553 minutes lap the Veltins-MRS-Pilot claimed best time in the first ever split qualifying session of the Supercup at the Nürburgring. Jeroen Bleekemolen, with a gap of about 1/10 become second in front of guest starter Jan Seyffarth. Huisman after an accident in the Schumacher-S missed the Top-10.

Two parts – first time Qualifying in split mode
For the first time in the history of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup the field at the 7th of 13 rounds the field went into a qualifying with two different parts. The target of the first 25 minutes was to claim a top ten position to be allowed to participate in the second part of the session. “With that we primarily want to provide the spectators with an added value having race cars on the track for 40 minutes”, Supercup manager Jens Walter explains the new mode. For the top-drivers the 25 minutes of the first part were no problem at all, except Patrick Huisman. Trying to manage a quick lap the four-fold Supercup champion lost his car and hit into the crash barriers backwards in the Schumacher-S. “I was really quick, came onto the dirt and went off over curbs and the meadows”, says the SPS-Pilot. “However, that was not the problem. I was in control of the Tudor-Porsche but at the end of the curb I went over a bump.” The Porsche went into a spin at a speed of about 200 km/h and crashed into the barriers. After a box stop and a repair the 24-fold race winner had to settle 13th.

Six from seven - Bleekemolen starts from the first row again
"It was not bad", says Jeroen Bleekemolen. "To be 1/10 behind the fastest is OK, because what counts is to start from the first row.” With a 2:03.646 minutes laps the Dutch starts from the first row of the grid for the sixth time this season. “The new qualifying mode is quite good for the spectators. They now see a lot more cars on the track. However, I also loved the old mode, because as a driver you were forced to bring it on the point in one lap only, what I managed to do in the past.”

With a third rank the Dutch championship leader Jeroen Bleekemolen crowns himself with the half-time-championship of the 2009 season. After 7 of 13 rounds the Konrad Motorsport pilot leads the driver standings with an advantage of 38 points in front of René Rast, who won the race at the Nürburgring in front of Stefan Rosina and Jeroen Bleekemolen.

Wheel-spin at the start – Victory at the end
With an almost flawless start and finish victory René Rast claims his second victory in a row. After the race victory in Silverstone Rast wins also the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. “A huge thank you goes to my team”, he rejoices after the victory ceremony. “I had the best car in the grid this weekend. I was in control of the race until the chequered flag came out.” Only at the start the MRS-Pilot was under pressure. “Once again I had to much wheel-spin and lost the lead to Jeroen”, says Rast. Bleekemolen turns first into the Infield after to the long starting straight. Rast almost even lost second position to Rosina, who attacked him in the first corner. "I was really in trouble for a short moment", Rast admits. However, a few curves later the German is back again, is able to pass Bleekemolen and takes over the lead after only one kilometre again. “Unfortunately I had some understeering and hit Jeroens Car. I am really sorry for that incident”, says Rast, who after that took over the control of the race and finally wins with an advantage of 4.2 seconds.

Workers' monument
SPS pilot Patrick Huisman recommends himself obviously as a hero of the work: After the accident in the qualifying he really chased through the field and improved six positions already in the first lap. "I was the best car, I drove this year", says the fourfold Champion. During the rest of the race distance he improves position by position and finally finished fourth. In the finally phase of the race he even managed to pass team mate Richard Williams, who’s lap times got worse in the final laps. “Sorry for Richard, but I am really happy with the result”, Huisman reports satisfied. In the last lap of the race Williams even lost fifth rank to Norbert Siedler. “I feel content, the lap times were good as well as the Result”, the Austrian reports back to his team.
