Over the last few weeks our friend Ben Harrison from La Broca sim racing has been taking a look at each of the sims out there and giving us an overview of what each one does best. This week it's the turn of iRacing.
Any guesses for what the first thing Ben says iRacing does best? No shockers here, the online experience, or more specifically the scale of the online system. The vast number of races with well populated grids across a multitude of different car types and racing disciples caters for most tastes. Moreover the license system is something which adds a lot of meaning to the races you're competing in.
The next thing iRacing does best according to Ben is the damage model. I haven't spent a lot of time in iRacing so I can't say I have experienced the full effect of it but from what I have seen I would have to agree. I am a huge proponent of better, more detailed damage models in sim racing as I think it's terribly underdeveloped in most sims. iRacing appears to take damage seriously and gives drivers a reason to protect their equipment as the fear of even a minor contact could mean it's race over.
Finally Ben picked something that I wouldn't have thought of, the quality of the tracks. This is probably because I haven't spent a lot of time or money on iRacing so haven't used many of the tracks but Ben does make a good argument and has tempted me into trying a few more.
