Upcoming Racing Games and Updates We Should See in 2022

New Sim Racing Games for 2022 01.jpg
After several years of rapid growth, this should be another exciting year for the racing game and racing sim genres. Here are some things that should be released in 2022.

One of the things that benefitted from more people staying home for entertainment over the past two years is sim racing. Whereas a celebrity or real world racing driver posting a picture of their home sim rig in 2019 would have made news in our niche community, in 2020 and 2021 it has become almost expected. This surge in popularity is sure to continue into the next calendar year and bring with it some exciting new titles and content for all of us to enjoy. Here are some of the things we should see released next year.

1) Assetto Corsa Competizione Updates - Kunos' most recent major update to ACC brought a new car, improved performance, and some subtle news that more was to come. Their official launch video of the 1.8 update was tagged with a rapid-fire image showcase featuring American tracks and the newest edition of the Porsche Cup car. This is in addition to the Super Trofeo EVO2 that made a brief appearance to the public earlier this year. Lastly, let's not forget that ACC will be released to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S/X quite soon. So 2022 should be a big year for this sim.

2) F1 2022 - Codemasters is surely hard at work getting things ready for the next installment of the F1 series. The past two seasons of Formula 1 have been significantly disrupted, and three tracks added to F1 2021 post-release showed Codies' efforts to try and keep up. 2022 will bring a substantial update to the car regulations in Formula 1, and hopefully we see those updated cars well represented in the official F1 game.

3) Automobilista 2 Updates - Reiza Studios has made a habit of releasing updates at least once per month since AMS2 was given to us, and that pattern should carry in next year. The third installment of the popular Racin' USA DLCs could drop in 2022, along with other new content and game improvements. The online rating system has been released already in beta form, but as the title gains more users that system will be refined and will hopefully make for some great racing in a title that shows massive potential for multiplayer competition.

4) Gran Turismo 7 - More details from the upcoming Gran Turismo title are being released each week, and it seems like it'll be a return to what made this series a favourite to many of us over the past decades. Whereas Gran Turismo Sport seems to have always been tailored to the online competitive racing realm, GT7 should include the car customization, game modes, and even some of the tracks that made GT famous.

5) Forza Motorsport 8 - 2021 was a massive year for the Forza franchise, with Horizon 5 posting incredible sales figures and garnering awards. Horizon's more serious circuit racing sister-franchise, Forza Motorsport, could seem its eighth installment released next year. Where it falls in terms of realism and an appeal to hardcore sim racing fans remains to be seen, but a likely scenario is that similar to the Gran Turismo series, Turn 10 will play to their strengths and release a title that falls in line with what millions of players have come to love about the franchise.

What are you expecting in the world of sim racing next year? Is there any new content on this list or otherwise that you'd really want to get your hands on in 2022? Let us know in the comments below.

I don't think that the words "F1", "Codemasters", and "hard at work" have any business being in the same sentence.

Every year it's a copy and paste of last years, albeit with the new cars and liveries, and every year they somehow manage to reintroduce all of the exact bugs that were fixed in the previous version.
The bugs are source controlled so they can be applied to the new codebase. It must have been something that SMS brought onboard from Project Cars 1 and 2 when they were bought out. :)

The main things im "excited" about are:

* Nvidia 4000 series cards (im an optimist) for VR use
* ACC US tracks that are not COTA
* Reiza further improving physics
* A fanatec GT3 wheel that is higher fidelity than McLaren but cannot fit in a real racecar

Really don't understand people that rave about the btcc super tourers. Yeah they were cool at the time but even the drivers who have driven the newest cars say the newer cars cost a 10th of the price to build and develop and yet drive ten times better.

BTCC game I'm kind of looking forward to just hope Toca/btcc have the sense to can it if motorsport games don't perfect it before release.
yes they drive ten times better but racing today is realy boring as sport and also for drivers some not even can compete some just to help team mates or team orders.............

Much as I like the current BTCC the Super Touring era was a golden era with great cars, teams, manufacturers, huge crowds & top drivers. The series before the super touring era was nothing more than club racing.

It was one of those eras like late 80s DTM,Group B Rallying ,Group C,Turbo F1,Earnhardt in Nascar. If you cant get excited about any of those eras of racing then you are not much of a race fan.In 20 yrs time I doubt many people will be excited about the 2021 BTCC Ford Focus being included in a sim.

Lots more quality AC mods, thank the gods over at GT planet.
Not forgetting the lads at RD. If I could afford it I would take every top modder out for a pint or two.
You know who you are ;-) (FA is a god, same with the CM lad, not so much with the rain man)

Without hesitation I buy every single DLC from Reiza, not so much from studio cash cow, had my last purchase at seabring.

Oh another boring codemasters skin-job, sorry full price release. Perfect match for EA, am I wrong?

On a positive note ACC is damn good, only downside Unreal engine. utter crap for VR, hope UE5 is better.

AC2 don't f**K it up.

By now I have run out of computer games to buy which suit my interests and requirements:
Dakar Desert Rally could be the very game I long for. I hope it turns out well.
As for other games, I plan to buy WRC 11, as it is the developer's final and hopefully best WRC game, as well as F1 2021 or 2022 (depending on whether F1 2022 includes the 2021 season as well). The new Test Drive game will be worth taking a look at as well.

I want a real INDYCAR game! All tracks and teams. Would be awesome to have classic classes as well. ONLY racing sim though. I hate the F1 story modes. Those are awful waste of time. Just want to race thanks! More focus on physics and driving. Less on silly stories.

That's what makes racing games repetitive and boring to the casual gamer though. Racing games/simulators need at least a career mode with some good growth, from cheaper cars to full prototypes, it's something that has been missing since GT6

I am wondering what's the future for rfactor2, any news?
A recent post on the S397 page says that they are taking a fresh approach in 2022 in how they communicate updates, DLC and fixes. BTW, December updates, DLC and fixes have been pushed out into the new year.:speechless:

I dont mind career modes as long as they focus on the racing. My son drives me insane with the MLB, NBA, games. He spends 30 min to figure out what uniform he is going to wear and batting gloves AND creating a character. Whatever happened to playing the game. When did these games become dressup??

You can skip the entire cringe career mode in F1 and run as yourself on a team or pickup as a driver.

A year ago they were going to take a fresh approach on how to allow the community to report bugs. At this point this is just a PR talk without any meaningful outcome. I'll believe it when I see it.

What am I looking forward to most in 2022....

IRacing....the weather update to land, grass and vegetation, further AI combos added and the Brazilian Stock car.

AMS2...continue improving the title, fix bugs and add some more non Brazilian modern vehicles.
The Adrenaline DLC, Modern Touring cars and a Audi R8 in either GT3 or GT4 trim would really have me launching this title more.

Horizon 5...I've been playing this title quite a bit over the holidays as it's a nice escape from the Sims.
The game looks great and can be fun but is riddled with endless bugs that need to be addressed.
Hell, I just want my custom wheel profile to be selected upon launching the game and I'd be happy lol

Made me think, I'd actually really enjoy a similar open world driving game with more advanced physics and damage model.

ACC...looking forward to the American DlC...tho I'd love a VR performance pass first.

Raceroom...a new engine

What's wrong with people enjoying the game the way they want? For quite a lot of people the freedom to be creative in sims and make livery's or their own careers is a large part of the fun. Hell even just normal career mode that you want is technically playing dressup for race car driver.

My biggest wish for 2022 is for AMS2 to really take off, it has a lot of potential. They just need to find a way to sort the physics out, it’s improved but still feels like a drift simulator.
AMS1 was my favourite sim, no bells or whistles but great physics and ffb, AMS2 is the other way around with fantastic graphics, weather and amazing in VR but the cars and the ffb just feel way off. Hopefully Reiza find the key to unlocking the madness engine in 2022

Oh I don't have any problem with people enjoying the game the way they want to. It just isn't my style. As long as that part can be bypassed I'm good. Just don't want a lot of focus to be on that, when to me the gameplay is more important to focus on as a developer. Just look at the nascar 21 game. They spent forever on the paint shop, but zero time on the actual gameplay and you see what a disaster this game has become.
