Test Drive Unlimited | Solar Crown Trailer Reveal

Many of the longer term racing game fans here will likely be familiar with the mega cool Test Drive Unlimited series - well, now we have a new instalment coming - and here is the first trailer!

OK, it's called a trailer but unless I'm missing something I don't actually see any real gameplay footage contained within the short video, but what I'm sure you can all agree on is, what we do see is rather graphically impressive indeed.

Another nice noteworthy point is the sight of some impressive official brands within the trailer, with both Aston Martin and Range Rover having a significant presence in the new video, as is the indication that the new title will continue in the spirit of earlier franchise entries in that it looks set to be highly story driven - giving the game a more substantial gameplay experience that limiting the title to core driving missions.

At present, not much is known about the upcoming new game, aside from the fact console and PC versions of the title will be made available on launch, however it looks like we will have to contain waiting just a little longer before we find out exactly when that release date will be.

I'd just like to say .................... #NoVRnoBuy :p

Sadly Kylotonn has been really stubborn about VR, not putting it in WRC games.

It would fit this kind of game or Forza Horizon 4 so well... When admiring scenery is part of the appeal. Walking around the dealerships, checking the cars etc... oh well

Btw, anyone has tried TDU1(pc) with some of those "upgrade" mods, like Platinum or remastered? Does it work with those with W10 64bit, difficult to install etc? And of course does it look good with those mods.

Someone living in 2010 still complaing about Kylotonn.

Based on WRC8 and WRC9, they are more than capable of making good enough physics, good looking environments (with long draw distance) and weather effects for TDU3. Original TDUs didn't have good physics, but still good games. Even if the physics are slightly worse than WRC9, they are still far better than TDU 1-2.

Who knows maybe Kylotonn makes it more sim-like/simcade, sort of Forza Horizon for grownups? They definitely have solid physics in WRC9. Definitely most interesting upcoming driving game.

The lead dev worked on both TDU1 and 2, and they will use WRC9 physics as basis, talked about here:

Sounds like it will be very similar in spirit to TDU 1-2.

It will feature some IRL island in 1:1 scale, and based on the black license plates on the new trailer, some have speculated that it might be Guernsey on the French coast. Don't know if Guernsey has fast enough highways, definitely pretty enough scenery.
I like the sound of using the WRC games as a baseline. If it is as realistic as WRC 9, that will be good enough for me to have a lot of fun with this game.

Indeed.

Hopefully "using as baseline" doesn't mean "but then we added some extra grip". Like with Forza Motorsport --> Forza Horizon 4.

The lead dev said they want to make TDU3, because "there is nothing like that on market right now." So, probably trying to differentiate from FH4. Trying to beat FH4 in it's own game would be futile, you can't beat those graphics and car roster. But with more realistic, "mature" angle it might have an audience.

If I'm playing FH4, I'm constantly thinking "Why can't this be more like TDU1"

Yes, Platinum by far the best TDU mod. It shines with Hardcore Mode physics unlocked (once you reach Champion level in the campaign).

In Hardcore it can be quite challenging, especially with assists off and heavy traffic, high powered tuning, etc. The server is quite active too, so theres always people to drive with.

While racing/driving titles are my preference, I play video games of many different genres for the last 30+ years.
And if I had to choose one, TDU is my favourite game of all times. The one I spent more hours to.
So I am really looking forward to this.

ps: I bought The Crew 2 when I learned that TDU team was behind game development. There are definitely common things but I can't say I really like the game. Still playing a bit from time to time when I don't have my rig in the leaving room and want some relaxing couch gaming though.

Yeah probably not. Although it has an airport, which could connect it to other islands like in TDU2. But Guernsey alone is indeed too small, way smaller than Ibiza.

The UK island plates might not mean anything, it won't be mainland UK because it was said to be 1:1 scale. Too large area will mean just copy-paste environments and low detail

If you put a lot of detail into the island, even smaller area will be impressive. It doesn't have to top Ibiza in size imo, if they really go next level with the details and graphics. Guernsey however, too small

Kylotonn can make pretty environments, WRC9 stages look mostly stunning, packed with detail. They also did TT Isle of Man 2, which doesn't look bad.
Well, I think it would.be a mistake to make a british vibe map, forza horizon already did it. Ohau in TDU is 1545km2, ibiza 572km2. In this kind of size, more suitable islands in Europe would be Madera, La Palma, Tenerife...

Edit : with some.autogen, they could reproduce bigger islands like Corsica, Sicilia, Malta...
