rFactor 2 Update Brings Significant Improvements to Loading Times

rFactor 2 Load Times Update 00.jpg
Studio 397 released an update last week for rFactor 2 that addressed a long-standing issue for the sim: loading times.

Build 1.1126 of rFactor 2 became available on Steam last week, and though the update was small and didn't garner very many headlines, the impressive changes to the loading times are worth discussing.

In recent years two of the more common shortcomings players complained about in rFactor 2 were the dated graphics and the slow load times. The former was a focus for improvement for the Studio 397 team through 2020, and the latter has now been addressed in the most recent build.

In testing, my own load times on my AMD 3900X and 6800 XT based system were reduced by roughly half versus the outgoing build. Loading a new AI race session at the Nurburgring Nordschleife used to cost me close to five minutes, but that time is now under two minutes for me. Loading a single car practice session at Lime Rock Park went from close to two minutes to under one minute. This still lands rFactor 2 at the higher end of loading times for racing sims, but it's now far closer to its competitors. These values will be different for each player, but if you're like me and held back on playing the title because of the long wait times, give this latest update a try.

Here is an excerpt from the 1.1126 changelog regarding load times:

Game Loading
  • Optimizations to Game Loading and Series switching.
  • Optimizations to Texture Loading.
  • Added the ability to load cached track files from the component to improve loading times.
  • Improved shader loading and added pre-built shader cache to improve loading times.

So well done to Studio 397 on these changes. Testing the improved load times allowed me to reconnect with a sim I love. The improved load times allowed me to enter the sessions in a more positive mindset, and reminded me of the pure joy I get from racing in rFactor 2.

Let us know your thoughts on the improvements to rF2 in the comments below.

You have to race with black flags only. And if you tweak the AI on the player.json file as advised on the S397 Forum (look for a thread called AIW), run practice sessions, and the AI will improve their behaviour.
Depending on the cars and tracks, you can have very good AI races with very believable behaviour (including how they crash fighting for position).
And with black flags only, when they do crash, racing continues. It's that simple.

essentially, what you mean is that I have to fix the myself for the game to work the way it should? Meanwhile , the developer left the bugs there for community fix and don’t implement them in the game.

can you tell me why am I paying so much money for all these content that are often lower quality than competitors in a game that is broken?

Meanwhile, Motorsport Games are hiring 97(!!!) employees to work on their half a dozen of sims under develoment:

Anybody wanna come up with some BTCC physics or a new UI for rFactor 2? ;)

Nice, I hope they go all-in on the announced WEC sim. Virtual Le Mans is next month (and Sebring in 1,5 weeks), hopefully 2022 and 2023 will be the last times using rFactor 2. Then straight on to a modern endurance sim title!

I am afraid only you can answer that question.
With so many alternatives available to us as SIM racers these days, choosing wisely how we spend our time and money is our responsibility.
The blame is on us if we are wasting either or both.

I am curious, what happened to the AI?

I mean, last time I tried RF2 the AI was one of the things this sim could still do reasonably well, although it was not perfect. Notably, there were the slipstream issue and the odd behavior in the in lap, in which the AI would not try to pass slower cars, even from slower classes.

But you guys seem to be talking about something new. What would it be?
So basically they have driving issues. The struggle to drive certain types of cars properly. This happens as s397 hardcoded/removed certain AI variables which were used to give the AI additional stability and simplified their suspension physics. They did this as they thought this would make the AI more fair to the player and make the AI more realistic but they didn't change the code for their driving logic so we have this half baked AI which has somewhat similar physics to AI but struggles to drive in the same way. At least this is what I believe has happened.

My rF2 is closing when it finishes loading, it reaches 100% and goes back to windows.

Do you have to do something, delete a folder to make it work again after this update?

I use Windows 10 64bit

I think you all missed the boat, for 10 years people happily drive rF2 for the raw feeling it can give when setup good.

Tragedy the majority were blinded by indifference they can't see
I think the boat being missed is acknowledging the sim had issues that made it virtually unplayable for those with limited time, and for those who chose to use it lost interest due to the extremely long loading times.

It is not just the loading times, though. The UI is still very clunky compared to IRacing, ACC, AC, Raceroom, etc.

Good sim when you can get into it and if it someone's go-to, then great, but don't denigrate possible users because they won't accept the very real and very obvious faults of the sim.

User experience is far from ideal. Driving feel and experience, for me, head and shoulders above all other games. Even at GT3 level, in spite of some forgiveness on tyre slip. But I don’t really care too much about GT3 or, at least, it’s far from my favourite class.

WEC game will be a mass consumer game. To be sold to console and controller bound players. That’s where the real money is. Not on hardcore simulations (outside of iR which lives on its own space).

Loading times haven't improved drastically, but they have added a neat caching feature so the second time you load a track will be faster than before.

Do you know which other game is made by Motorsports Games with rF2 physics? NASCAR 21: Ignition, currently on a 2.2 user score on Metacritic. I sincerely hope the WEC game will be better than that.

1. Verify files on STEAM;
2. If it still does not work, move the player.json and controller.json files and verify files on STEAM, run Graphics config again;
3. Again, if it still does not work, delete the plugin folder and verify files on STEAM;
4. Last resort in case it still does not work is to move the USERDATA folder and verify files on STEAM, run Graphics config again;

(you could also start by running the rF2's Graphics Configuration)

Reserved to waiting patiently for a time, yet to be determined, when the owner at that time announces rF2 is complete and all bugs and complaints have been resolved and it's not the end of days or April 1st.

You sir are an optimist. With all that is happening with rF2, slow development, MP issues on the Nords race and the flop of a launch of Nascar 21 much more probable scenario is that Virtual Le Mans will be looking at a platform that Motorsport Games did not touch in the slightest.

Have you read about that somewhere? My guess is they are stepping into esports, for example the virtual LM has been massively viewed by milions of people. There's big money in racing esports events the coming years. And needing to use a race control room I actually doubt consoles will ever be platform for WEC. And I don't know if it's possible for racing teams to use applications like MOTEC on consoles, they need that on esports level.

True, I saw some reviews and it's a horrible release. But Studio 397 was added to Motorsport Games in May 2021. And NASCAR21 was released in October 2021. So I highly doubt they were involved in a single line of code. Edit: from what I read just now, it seems they could already use the RF2 physics engine, and somewhere during that development Motorsport Games incorperated the entire 397 studio. I think it's fair to wait until they actually get the time to work together.

Funny thing is, not many people call me an optimist. So I'll take that as a compliment! Since Studio 397 has a new employer they will probably have to work differently as well. Also, there's good money in esports events and I'm sure that Motorsport Games will aim to have a platform on which they can held a 24h event with the least amount of technical issues.
Indeed, currently the LM series is all about keeping your fingers crossed the server won't crash. I was watching the Nurburgring live when race control cancelled the event. What a shameful display that was, but I guess they will have to do with RF2 for now and meanwhile work hard on WEC. I'm pretty sure that Automobile Club de l'Ouest ACO, who is involved in the virtual series as well, is desperate for a pain free event.

I will be looking forward to the WEC release, let's see what they deliver in a couple of years :)

Server issues on the Virtual LM series’ Nords event still have unknown causes and there are reports of other RF2 events/leagues experiencing identical issues at the exact same hour so it could have been - not saying it was - just an unfortunate event.
When it works - and I haven’t witnessed major issues - the netcode is superb.

Regardless of whether S397 saw the code, it is quite obvious from N21 footage that it shares the DNA of rFactor 1/2 oval racing physics and AI, including all the decade old bugs and oddities.

Yep, horrible outcome. But as I said, give them some time to actually develop something. My guess is that the NASCAR21 game needed to be published in 2021 according to schedule. And that it's not representative for what WEC can become.
